    In this video I talk about the different kinds of fuses I've encountered in my Electronics Repair business, and some of the misconceptions myself and others have had in being able to identify slow Vs fast blowing fuses by appearance alone. Especially pertaining to Ceramic Fuses which aren't necessarily slow blowing.
    I said something incorrect in this video concerning the use of a lower voltage fuse where it calls for a higher voltage one. I thought it was probably okay but I've since been informed it's not a good idea. It's generally okay to use a higher voltage fuse in place of a lower voltage original, but it's not recommended you use a lower voltage fuse where it calls for a higher voltage fuse.

    Love the comments about secret societies. I spent 5 minute copying the symbols only to find out from you that they are irrelevant to determining the type of fuse used in my subwoofer . I also now appreciate the reason it is ceramic (vibration resistant) not just because B&W wanted to make it as difficult as possible to source a spare . Thanks mate.

    Much appreciated! Lots of very good information about fuses in this one video.
    I was looking for fuse information while trying to figure out the correct fuse to use in a Cen-Tech digital multimeter that states on the 10ADC line are 10A max; then on V Ohms mA line to COM is CAT. II with a rating of 750VAC/1000VDC/200mA max. It's recommended by some guides online to use a 500mA 5mmx20mm glass fast blow fuse... however this seems to contradict what is printed on the front of the unit. The instruction manual doesn't give any information for replacing the fuse (unfortunately). I think I might have to use a 200mA 250V 5mm x 20mm glass fuse although a ceramic one might be fine to use as well. I misplaced the original fuse that was in the unit so I am unable to confirm what was originally in there but I suspect it was rated for 200mA.

    Pulled out a T1AH250V fuse out of my DVD player(ceramic). Went to the store they gave me F(with little F in it)1A250V and told me that amperage and voltage is right so screw the letters. Bullshit. The power button lit up and as soon as I tried to press it to turn it on the fuse blew.

    Interesting video. One thing about the thermal fuses... the wires attached to them are usually crimped-on because the heat from a soldering iron could be enough to cause the thermal fuse to fail open (I learned that the hard way many years age).

    Thank You: I just pulled a 3AG fuse 4.0A 250V out of my Guitar Amp. (312)
    It’s supposed to be SLO-BLOW, according to the back of the amp & the Manual !!
    I too have a supply of Fuses, since I serviced amps a long time ago !!!
    Construction wise, it looks like a FAST BLOW ???
    In my supply I Have Both: ALL LITTLE FUSE
    I SAW ON YOUR CHARTS: “312” is FAST & “313” is SLOW !!!!!!!!
    THEREFORE: the DEAD fuse I removed was wrong (312) AND I KNOW THE FUSE I JUST PUT IN IS SLOW, PLUS IT IS MARKED “313” !!! AGAIN: THANK YOU !!!

    I think crimping the thermals is because the heat conducted in to the thermal from soldering would open it..

    I think I've got a better understanding now of what I'm looking at but I would like to make sure.
    When I'm looking up the fuse I need (T10L250V), I get results of all three different slow blows...the coil...the straight one....and the one with the bead of solder. Is there any difference between the types or are they just different designs of the same thing?

    If you want to solder a low temperature thermal cutout or fuse you can place several clamp-on heat sinks on either side of the joint and solder them together quickly.

    Got some BUSSMAN CERAMIC FUSES
    20A / 250V 6.35mm x 31.75mm with the RU (BACKWARDS R) symbol but no other markings. Any idea if they are slow or fast blow? EDIT: found it, they are fast-acting or fast blow, then I rewatched your video & seen at 3:11 your chart shows ABC as the fast blow marking. Thanks!

    Thanks for a great explanation of those arcane fuse naming systems. Regarding ceramic fuses, do I understand correctly that an "H" designation doesn't correlate with slow blow or fast blow? I have a ceramic fuse from a Panasonic microwave that's designated 6H20A250V, and can't figure out whether it's a fast or slow blow fuse.

      Yes you are correct about the letter H. It only represents the fuses ability to withstand mechanical damage. Unless your fuse has other letters or numbers I have no way of knowing if it's a fast or slow blow fuse.

    I couldn't though identify fore sure the some of the markings on mine (a 1/4" x 1 1/4" 250V 8A fuse used in a 120W Eliminator 12v-115V Inverter ). There is "AFE" and "JET" and "CQ" that I am not sure what they stand for... but I suppose that the "F" in "AFE" means that it is a fast blowing fuse?
    The other markings I see on that fuse, and that I recongnized on your charts are the losange with PSE, UL and CSA.
    (p.s. not sure if that's only me, but the video terminated abruptly, it looks stripped at the end?)
    I have saved it in my DIY playists for future reference !

    in thousands of service calls I have actually seen less than a handful of ceramic slow blow fuses the meter good but will pull no current I guess there's just enough metal oxide in the sand after it blows?

      +Bret H It sounds like your saying you have seen blown fuses that still had a remaining conductive path due to the internal sand. I have never seen this before. not even once in all the years I've been doing this.

    Hi I have a fuse with symbol 12, F.20A/250VP. So do I have a fuse that can withstand 20A or 0.2A?

      0.2 means 2 tenths of an amp or 200 milliamps.

    Hi how are you? I own a subwoofer that comes from Europe (where voltage is 220) and I don't know if it will work fine with his T1AL (230v) fuse or I have to change it with a T2AL(115v)? Thankyou!

      I don't know what the numbers mean, but I was taught not to worry about the voltage difference with fuses, but only the current, and if it's a fast or slow blow type, and and it's never been problem for me.

      I just read that "T" is for "slow blow" and "2A" it means "2 amp". Same thing "1A" is for "1 amp". I'm very ignorant with this kind of things.
      My worry was because at the power cable plug it says "T1AL for 230v and T2AL for 115v" :/

    Have you seen a ceramic fuse in a microwave oven with a single stripe around the diameter at the middle of the fuse? Would that indicate slow-blow?

    In cars it was common to have a fuse-able link near the battery. It looks just like regular wire coming off the + terminal.

      +Grants Pass TV Repair I am guessing cost and mechanical reliability. The link is basically just wire so it's cheap and easy. A fuse at the battery will corrode from acid fumes and likely fail. An extra fuse holder and connections will add cost too.

      I suppose corrosion could be a good reason. It's certainly an issue with battery terminals.If given a choice I would prefer a well sealed fuse that I can easily test rather than having to poke through the insulation on a fusable link.

    I've got 4 fuses in my cassette deck. 2-SS, 1-ST, and one with no markings. So I think three are slow blow; is it safe to assume that the fourth is slow?

      If you have Two fuses in parallel it will increase their amperage capacity, but not in a series circuit, which is probably what you meant when you said "inline"

    Great video! Am trying to replace my multimeter DC fuse but need your help. It is a glass fuse marked UL and Canadian Standards fuse. It has 'SHMF 51NM' on one cap while the other cap is marked 250v 0.315a - that's the easy part but am having difficulty deciphering the 'SHMF' part. Please help !!! Thank you. OBW - it's a 5 x 20mm fuse.

      You can replace a slow blow fuse with a fast blow fuse, but there is a good chance it will blow out even if the circuit it supplies power for is okay, It sounds like you're wanting to go with a higher capacity fast blow fuse to compensate for not using a slow blow fuse. I have not knowledge on how to calculate this.

      Yes I am trying to replace a slow blow fuse with a fast blow fuse for a lighting circuit, periodically, until I can source a replacement (in this case it’s an emergency.) The 500mA fuse is to protect the contractor coil.

    Great video explanation of the various fuses. I came across your video while trying to figure out if I have a fast blow or a slow blow glass fuse I need to replace. It came out of a Panasonic VCR model PV-4214. It is from the power supply module. It measures 5mm x 20mm and states 125V 1.6A on one end and 51S on the other end. The filament is not visible due to black inside part of the glass. Any idea if it is fast or slow blow?

      I wouldn't be able to figure that out, but the worst case scenario if you use a fast blow fuse is it may open. A slow blow fuse just buys you a little more time if you exceed it's capacity.

      @@GrantsPassTVRepair I am going to heed your advice and go with the fast blow to be safe. The 2 solder beads inside the fuse have the wire filaments sticking out on both ends. That's why I thought it might be a slow blow fuse. I see printed on the circuit board 1.6A125V with a fuse symbol inside a triangle.

      @@jimstelljes3925Do you know why the fuse blew in the first place? It generally means the circuit has a problem, and you will keep blowing fuses if you don't repair the issue. Once and awhile a fuse opens up even though the circuit is okay, but not to often.

    H and L breaking capability does not indicate how mechanical robust a fuse is, but which short circuit current it could break (clear the arc), Low does only about 35A so it is used secondary, H does break about 1000A and can be used on the primary side, and then there are fuses suitable in CAT II and CAT I measurement instruments that break about 10000A.

    Hi. I have power supply for a USB enclosure. Is this a Slow or fast blow. It seems to be a ceramic radial (which in the middle, opaque), through hole. This are the specs:
    250V
    2A
    It has this some, kind of math division: Ds/T
    It's about a few millimeters in thickness and about 1cm in length.
    When read by a multi-meter is read: OL
    Is this fuse dead?
