Before his move to Chicago, Floyd got his big start in his hometown of Omaha on KMTV from it's launch in 1949 to 1960. A graduate of Omaha Benson High School and Creighton University before his tenure in TV news.
Gosh. Jane really had an on air presence at such a young age. I'm thinking she is 23 or 24 here? And loving the blonde locks. She looks gorgeous. Neat that they got to work together again on TODAY. She must have left to join him soon after he departed.
More than a "Who's Who" of Greats. Jack Taylor was terrific! Bill and Walter, Floyd, Fahey and Joel, Tim, Jim and? were the Best. Chicago Television had the best News. All of these individuals were ground-breaking in their own right. Now, not so much.
In the '70s, Floyd Kalber did a 5-minute newscast on NBC-TV at 12:55 pm ET. I don't know if that covered the whole time he did it, but CBS-TV used to do the same at 11:55 am ET.
From what I've read, WMAQ-TV's choices to replace Kalber were between Jacobson, Bill Kurtis, Ron Hunter, and Mort Crim. Crim ended up going to WBBM-TV as a safety guard in case either Kurtis or Jacobson defected to WMAQ (or in Kurtis's case, either there or CBS News), but they both ended up staying. Crim was underutilized at WBBM and he bolted to WDIV in Detroit as its lead male anchor in '78. WMAQ had been courting Ron Hunter for several years and when WPLG in Miami dumped him a few months earlier, WMAQ snapped him up quickly. Hunter would join Pauley the following Monday (June 21).
@@davanmani556 Two words, one name: Ralph Renick. In two years at WPLG, Hunter couldn't topple the juggernaut that WTVJ's evening newscasts were back then (Renick was 6:00 PM anchor and news director). And Hunter's own ego grew; reportedly he was shopping around for other jobs while on vacation. It was WPLG who made the decision to cut Hunter loose, all because Hunter couldn't beat WTVJ (or WCKT, for that matter).
Jane and Tuna reportedly didn't get along. If memory serves me right (from Pauley's A&E Biography) Floyd was hesitant to have a female co-anchor and never made Jane feel at home.
@@KeithE4 Actually, Floyd left to join The Today Show in June 1976 and Jane began there in early October 1976. It was interesting that they both ended up there.
Unfortunately, it didn't make this clip, but I remember the camera was still on when this broadcast was over. Jane extended her hand to shake Floyd's, and he reached over and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
Jonathan Allen I thought she tried too hard to be a journalist like Babs and didn’t embrace that “smoke or Yum-Yum” image because her spontaneity allowed her intelligence to flow and it’s that attracted her to people. Brokaw and Kalber tried make her into Barbara Walters by cutting off stories she wanted to do which wasn’t so needy. Luckily, Barbara backed her up and in the 80’s, she, Joan, and Diane Sawyer really kicked butt. But Oprah was better at that.
Davan Mani And speaking of Oprah Winfrey...she and Pauley both auditioned for the WSB-TV (Atlanta) anchor job, but one lady impressed the station bosses even better and she got it: *Monica Kaufman Pearson!!!*
@@LaurenLover81 Not true. The ratings stayed about the same and even improved a little. It was when Jane joined in 1975-1976 that the ratings took a dive, and it was decided something needed to be done because Channel 5 had been having problems for quite some time even before she got there. I was just reading about this recently.
Floyd Kalber was an absolutely competant news anchor, something terribly missing today by reporters,
Incredible time capsules. Thank you.
0:52 WGN newscaster Jack Taylor had such an amazing, soothing voice.
A Who's Who of Chicago newscasters. Thanks for sharing.
Whenever someone mentions "TV news anchor" in my mind I can hear that golden voice saying "I'm Floyd Kalber."

That channel 5 newsroom looked like a spaceship.
I’ve never been to Chicago, but I’m impressed with the talent there, especially from channel 5.
Jane Pauley has clearly aged well and was a beauty!
The talent in this broadcast is amazing.
Jim Tilmon, my man!!

Jane was 25 at the time this aired. She was born on Halloween in 1950
Producer Ed Planer said that when she came to Chicago, she was going to go National in 3 years.
RIP Floyd Kalber.

And now it's the NBC Midday News with Floyd Kalber
Anyone else just love Tim Weigel's Chicago accent?

I wish NBC stations had kept the NewsCenter name for their telecasts.
Producer Ed Planer wanted Walter Jacobson to replace Floyd but Walter balked at working with Jane Pauley.

RolloSmokes why did WPLG dump Ron?

She followed him to the Today Show about a year later. He went back to Chicago, to WLS-TV. They never got along.

Rather unorthodox for a newscast to show the news sets and talent of its rivals.
That’s Chicago TV news for.
Jane was such a smoke show.
