I always want to point out to younger guys, that you couldn't carry the ball like you can today. That's why the dribbling looks different. West would feast in today's game.
Absolutely Dragon. West would have scored 80+ in today's game in his prime, being able to travel and carry thr ball, dbl dribble the ways this generation of players Do. And it should all be called. Bron taking steps should not be allowed. But West players the game right, as it should be played. As did Wilt and Russell, Elgin, Bird. The all played the game correctly. And there was hard defense in West's era. I will really miss Jerry. My Dad's Fave player, along with Wilt, Russell, Elgin, Hondo and Dr J,who my Dad wanted me to pattern my personal mannerisms after. DR J and Jerry, because of my extreme height. I drive and repair rigs instead. West was oneof the best ever. RIP, to the fans friend.
this man overcame so much to become one of the greats. Nothing was given to him, plenty was taken, and yet he was the ultimate competitor. Amazing character off and on the court. We can't ask for a better person to be the logo of the game.
Jerry West, not only one of my top 5 favorite players of all time but one of my favorite persons. He knew how good he was but his humility was sincere. Take your rest Mr. West
He is the most important person in NBA history. As a player, and executive (his career here far exceeded his playing career), and as the reason we can quickly recognize the league worldwide. The Logo.
100% agreed, he lived an amazing life and had a one of a kind impact on the sport of basketball. Spanning 7 decades as a player, coach, scout, GM/executive, and ambassador for the game. I know he was very modest about it but he was the perfect embodiment of the NBA logo. Thank you for everything Jerry, Rest In Peace 🙏💜💛
There wasn't a player then who could guard him and none today either. A pure shooter, especially in the clutch and if not the Russell Celtics - who beat the Lakers six straight times - he would have won more titles. He's on my All-Plumbers team with Russell/Wilt at center, West and Oscar Robertson at the guards and Elgin Baylor and Bob Pettit at the forwards. With Wilt at center it averages 138 points a game. With Russell, it's a defensive force. Go ahead, beat them .....
@@hakeemolajuwon4352 They don't play on the same team, but what are you tryin' to say? Here's my GOAT TEAM: Give me the team that beats them and how: Jerry West @1, Elgin Baylor @ 2, Larry Bird @ 3, Hakeem Olajuwon @4, Wilt Chamberlain @ 5 ?
An incredible player, and that only captured the first phase of his career where he turned into one of the best executives the game has ever seen as well.
I learned that jumper from him. That’s the ultimate weapon. He says it right from the beginning of this video. Only the offensive player knows when he’s going to shoot…so you always have the advantage. The hard last dribble is key. You’re already going up in the air on the stop and the ball isn’t so much picked up as going up with you in that split second. The lead plant foot stops you on the dime going in either direction. You’re up in the air before the defensive player has time to react. There’s no need to clown someone because you’ve already beat them. The emphasis on clowning people these days off the dribble is a complete waste of energy and time 90% of the time. KISS…keep it simple stupid. It’s about putting the ball in the hole. Period. That’s what he did. RIP JERRY WEST…you deserve it…you EARNED IT!❤❤❤❤❤💯
Jerry West would crush it in today's game, you want 35-40 points you got it, no need to ask him to defend he always played defense and of course clutch......he has to be on the Mount Rushmore of guards in NBA history 6'4.5" with speed, big hops killer shooter, rebounder and defender, and a absolutely unmatched desire to win....
Higher in every major stat except FT% than Kobe. But I dont want to start a debate. Both Kobe and West had nothing but the utmost respect for each other.
@jordandwiggins1026 you make a good point, kobe would have the greater legacy cause of his accomplishments But when you compare there games no question west was better in scoring, and assist dept
I think West has an outside goat case. And an even stronger case for the best guard ever. I’d still take MJ in both spots, but it’s a legit argument. There was no weakness in his game. He could play both guard positions expertly. If he had the 3, who knows what changes. Obviously all the stats go up, but what does it mean for his ability to close games even better. If there was the 3, he’d be the holder of the greatest game winning shot by a country mile
A little unknown fact about Jerry West, he was one of if not the only white celebrity to frequently visit Compton at a time when its crime rate was bad and many famous white actors in surrounding Hollywood/Beverly Hills dared never to step foot in Compton. West was one of the few white role models that black people from the west coast could look up to
As a young boy growing up in Southern California listening to Chick Hearn describe Jerry West or Elgin Baylor taking the ball to the basket was gold then came Wilt Chamberlain and we finally had a team to whip the Celtics.....
RIP Jerry West. Jerry West has dropped the most career points in the NBA Finals, with 1,679 points. Whenever I see that shot against the Knicks I always notice how Reed sort of contested that shot. You'd think he'd let him shoot from that distance wanting to avoid any chance of a foul. What a player on both ends. The block from behind was a real specialty of his. It looks like Lou Hudson has him beat. Nope. West had tremendous recovery skill on defense. Walt Frazier was my favorite player, and a great player, but he wasn't West. 50 plus years ago I wasn't so ready to admit that.
West reminds me of Bird in that he’d beat you with smarts over athleticism. Also, West looked like his left hand dribble and shot were clearly inferior to his right. Finally, West never seemed to have a crossover that could burn other guards.
West crossed over effectively to get space and blow by - but it was the 60s version of it that doesn’t carry - no double crossing left to right then left again and no hesitations - these types of crossovers seen today are violations in that era as they usually are done by carrying the ball or hesitating with a float dribble prior to the drive which is ignored by refs today. West certainly preferred his right hand on all shots as far as finishing goes short of the rare occasional left handed layup but went left easily and had many attacks going left including a good pull-up jumper setup
West was the Larry Bird of his time, and that means he was for real the Truth on the floor. I guess we're about due for a repeat of the themes. If everyone would let it happen and stop trying to will it into existence. We'll get another Baylor/West/Cousey/Wilt/Jabar/Dr. J era that culminates in an unbelievable talent. It's happened what 3, 4 times now? People just need to be patient. All this pressure on Luka or A .Edwards is really unrealistic. Just enjoy the Jokic-Curry-Giannis era for what it is. BIG men with a few lil men dominating.
It is so crazy the fact that in 1969 they chose Jerry West's silhouette to be the logo, not knowing he would legibility become arguably the most important and impactful individual in the history of the NBA.
We Knicks and Celtics fans hated Jerry West. (in a nice way) Especially when he hit that 63 foot shot to put the game in ot. Yes, I said sixty three footer. Imagine if he had the opportunity to take 3pointers!
I appreciate feedback like this as this is my goal, to actually show truly good plays from his opponents perspective, some fan or announcer perspective excitement, and good testimony - in as high a quality as possible. A lot of stuff out there has testimony like “Jerry was so quick!” …then they show something he did in slow motion, without a strong contest which doesn’t get the point across. The editors probably had time and budget constraints and didn’t truly comb through to find the legit plays or maybe they don’t play so they have trouble recognizing them. I’m trying to illustrate the real problem he was for defenders here when they talked about why he was so tough. Showing the proper clips that illustrate his game is key, but I’ve had lots of time to find clips like this I don’t think they put the time into it Is my best guess. But thank you for recognizing my efforts.

Guys can't help how the rules are. They have to play within the rules.
You know in those days Shaq would have never played past the first quarter.
You literally had to dribble like Stanley from the Office 😂
About 20 years ago they asked him how he would do in today's NBA. West replied "I would be competitive, trust me."
