Elephant Foot Yam is known as Oluo in Odia is a very much profitable crop with very less effort and low risk. But it is not so popular among the farmers. It might be due to lack of awareness. Marketing may be another challenge.
But we talked to a farmer Mr. Satya Bera who is cultivating Elephant Foot Yam for more than last 20 years profitably. As per him major investment is required for planting materials. He is planting in March and harvesting in August. Nearly 5 months required from planting till harvest. It is a hardy crop which is tolerant to water stagnation, water scarcity and many pests and diseases. No such chemical fertilizers or pesticides are required to grow this crop. But he is applying 10 tractor loads of Farm Yard Manure / Compost during last land preparation. Major part of his investment goes towards planting material cost. Planted at 3 feet X 3 feet spacing. Around 2500 kilograms of tubers planted per acre with an average size of 1 kilogram each which yields around 25000 kilograms after harvesting. Gross profit will be Rs. 7, 50, 000/- if sold at Rs. 30/- per kilogram. Net profit will be of around Rupees Six Lakhs only after deducting the farming expenses of Rs. 1,50,000/- approximately per acre.
