I think a big reason why the BOTDF album didn't fare very well, is because it came just two years after HIStory, and it was still in fairly close proximity to the 1993 allegations. The news media has spent so much time persecuting Michael in those days, that admitting you were a fan was almost like surrendering yourself to be burned at the stake. The press hated him, and it only got worse in 2003 with the Arvizio family. Even though he was ultimately cleared, he never fully recovered from the emotional trauma, and I think that's part of what killed him. One man can only take so much, whether they're famous and rich or not.
You took exactly what i think about it too. Even though, MJ was always innocent the media continued to say he was guilty. Makes me so upset. He never deserved that.
Blood On The Dance Floor (HIStory In The Mix) album was No.1 here in the U.K. and a lot of countries around the world. It’s the biggest selling remix album of time 👈🏼 Backstory: Michael Jackson didn’t want this to be an album, the four newly recorded songs were supposed to be an EP, but Sony Music wanted it to be an album. The reasons you state the album not faring well, are for the U.S.A. only and nothing to do with MJ releasing ‘HIStory’ only two years before. BOTDF album wasn’t promoted at all by Sony Music (and the HIStory album and it’s singles were barely promoted in the U.S.A.) A lot of U.S.A. Michael Jackson fans and causal MJ fans wouldn’t have known the album existed when it was released. And this fact, was published in an article on Billboard Magazine (I remember reading it in 1997). The bit you are right about, is the false allegations had a negative effect on MJ’s music and career in the U.S.A. which was practically finished in 1993, but outside the U.S.A. Michael Jackson remained just as huge and popular as he was in the 80s, still selling out stadiums on tours, still have No.1 albums and singles etc.
I must say i admire your consistency to Michael’s legacy. You remain so loyal to him regardless of what anybody could’ve possibly said about him. I can tell you have been a fan for most of your life & that I respect deeply. Ive only recently begun watching your videos since Thriller Nights 2022. Thanks for your continuous content & supporting Michael’s legacy in all stages of his career. He is the greatest entertainer that have ever lived & he will never be duplicated.🙏 Keep on MJFangirl.
I have a couple of room tours that I did in the past. This time I don’t have as much space to work with for recording so I have to see what I can come up with. Thanks for the suggestion 💕
WHOOOO Blood On The Dance Floor!!!! Why doesn't the MJ community talk about it more? I don't know because it's a great album!! My favorite original song is Superfly Sister and OMG, I think I said this in a older video of yours, MJfangirl, how can I choose a favorite remix from this album? Ugh, there's so many good ones!!! Ok, I'm gonna go with HIStory (Tony Moran's HIStory Lesson) and Money (Fire Island Radio Edit). Oooh, and I love this themed box, so much cool stuff, especially that shirt (I'm a bit jealous hehe 😂)! I was also doing a bit of research on this album while watching this video and it turns out while this album had disappointing sales for Michael in the US (stupid press 😠), it did extremely well outside of the US and it has sold over six million copies worldwide since its debut. Anyway, thanks for showing us another great box!!! ✌👍
This is my second comment. My apologies. But I have a question. Has there been ANY news about the Thriller 40 documentary??? Or am I just late to the party? Lastly, you are probably one of my favorite UA-camrs that talks about MJ with such respect and love. And as a geriatric millennial (83) I appreciate you and someone like The Detail (who is my other favorite MJ UA-camr). Just wanted to say that #respect
Thank you for your kind words!! I actually saw a few days ago Nelson George shared that it would be released by the end of 2023. I’m not sure why it’s so delayed but apparently it’s complete!
Omggggggosh this mystery box is completely AMAZING 🤩 ❤✨👑✨❤️✨Everything MJ is the most top quality ever! I so love $1 goes to Heal LA🙏🏼❤️Thank you!! Got to have this!!
Blood On The Dance Floor (History In The Mix) and it’s lead single ‘Blood On The Dance Floor’ we’re both No.1 here in the U.K. in 1997. I still have the album Vinyl and CD I bought on it’s day of release in 1997. Was very excited about future music MJ would make after my first listen to ‘Morphine’ and ‘Superfly Sister’, which are two of my all time favourite Michael Jackson songs. The album was No.1 in many countries around the world, it’s the U.S.A. where MJ was effectively shutdown by the media, networks, radio and even Sony Music. The album was released as a remix album against MJ’s wishes. His intention was for it to be an EP with four new songs. I personally, don’t consider ‘BOTDF’ to be an full studio album, because of the remixes. It’s basically like saying ‘The Jacksons: Live’ is just as music a studio album as ‘Triumph’. BOTD is a standalone remix album, not to be compared to other MJ albums. During this 1995-1997 period there was no reason why MJ couldn’t have continued to have success in the U.S.A. I remember reading an interview with Frank Dileo on the early 2000s where he said ‘Earth Song’ should have been a No.1 single in the U.S.A. like it was in many countries in Europe etc, as it was the No.1 music video for 6 weeks on TLR (Total Request Live) on MTV in the U.S.A. and Sony Music should have released it as a single in the U.S.A. and made sure it got radio air play to promote it. In a book by Bruce Swedien (released around 2010), he said when MJ played the ‘HIStory’ album to music executives at Sony Music. The album was met with silence and no response from the executives, and MJ left the boardroom upset. So no surprise the albums ‘BOTDF’ and later ‘Invincible’ were barely promoted, especially in the U.S.A.
I love that album , that was my first cd album what I found in the shop 😊 and from that time I start doing my collection , anyway nice box I want it also I going to buy 😮🎉
Yea I remember when BOTD was released. Promotion for it was pretty much non existent that I can remember…other than it being spoken about because he was still the biggest star in the world. Most media was focused on the allegations, making characterizations about him, tabloid stories. This was the hay day of Michael mockery. So the album really sort of faded into obscurity against his other albums. As huge a fan as I am, I remember buying the album, but I don’t recall valuing it as much as the others. I think I was under the impression that MJ didn’t like remixes and this was a label project to satisfy his contractual obligations. I also no longer know where my copy of this cd is. But I definitely have all of the other and would dare anyone to touch them. I must not have liked this project or wasn’t as emotionally connected to it at all.
Thank you for the context on this! I always love hearing from fans who were actually there at the time and know what the overall reception of the project was
BOTDF was not really promoted in the USA when it was released, so many Americans don't even know about this album. There were physical CD singles released though, BOTDF and Stranger in Moscow, which comes with a really cool remix of Off the Wall by Junior Vasquez which I love. The main reason for releasing the album was to use the opportunity of the 2nd leg of the HIStory Tour in Europe and have new products for fans to buy. Mystery Drink was a peach-flavored soda that was created for selling during the tour. I never got to taste it lol but I imagine it tasted really sweet.
I love the album, blood on the dance floor history, and dangerous as well as bad are my top favorite Michael albums. It scary as one of Michael Jackson's best songs.
The only remix I really like from BOTDF is the Scream Louder one, I just don’t really care too much for the other ones. I love the original five songs! I agree about Morphine being so hard to listen to. It’s an amazing song, but it’s so dark, especially knowing what went on in Michael’s life.

The first 3 tracks on the album are all in my top 10 fave Michael songs, the other two are up in my top 20 at least. This album (the 5 new songs) might very well be my favorite. It definitely would be if it was a full album with songs as good as those 5.
