people always say that robots cant be conscious because they are just a simulation of what humans can do by their own choice. ASIMO is a great example to prove them wrong. ASIMO isnt hard wired to do the things he does. nobody typed in a program to determine exactly what it is that he would to in this video. he is able to make decisions about his surroundings and act upon them. that is intelligence and i believe that he is a living being.
Asimo is soon cute. The latest version of him that came out in 2011 can open a container, poor drinks, jump on one foot and both feet, use sign language, run at 9km/h, etc. He is pretty cool and cute.
@Haloya101 No. Remember when he showed Asimo the toy robot? He didn't know what it was, but he taught him that it was grandpa. So the next time he sees an action figure with the same properties, he will call it grandpa. So they probably just showed him a hotwheel and said "Toy car." He noticed its general shape and the four wheels and such.
@Grandeur001 I am thinking that is a signal. When asimo moves its hand show that it is running algorithms of interest to recognition or learning the object.
so amazing. alone from this behaviour one can interpret so much more "conscioussness" in this machine, because it behaves more humanlike. it felt a bit like i had the wish to protect it and make him feel comfortable.
Yes, but since the robot is only attuned to certain keywords to get its attention (plus the fact that someone behind the scenes could be muting it), it is in all probability that the robot does not know what it is.
imagine a mix from the "new" asimo (for bodymovement and so on) and these japanese facial "robots" that sometimes look real scary (real - but scary =) (Eva, Actroid, Jules....) (Eva looks like a botox-victim, but still the facial expression is amazing)
i don't know about ever, about 100 years ago people believed no one could fly we cant even start to comprehend what we might achieve thousands of years in the future. our bodies are machines as well, made of organic matter but it can be replicated ... eventually but not in the near future.
It can learn things, maybe It can judge situation or object by its progrmmed algorithms, It can repeat things and move in the space it has never been before... BUT it CAN'T CREATE!!! Only human has a creative mind! No robot will have that ability... EVER!
The technology gets cheaper every 6-months as it improves. That's the field of electronics and software. And Artificial Intelligence (A.I>), which this is the beginning stages of. Think how far this technology will be evolved in 25-years, in 2035.
Can you program a human brain? It's very primitive intelligence, but it's real. What sets it apart from deterministic scripting is that it's not simply reacting to preprogrammed cues, it's legitimately analyzing what it's looking at, comparing all of its properties to the properties of other things it has seen and so on. It's real visual intelligence, albeit in an early form, similar to what you can find in some parrots.
its great and at the same time scary, someday robots will look back at this videos of us humans showing them how to see the world and think. How will they think of us? as their fathers or something?
I know you're right, the "intelligence" these people are seeing in Asimo's behavior is the intelligence of the people who programmed him... there's a paradox here that people aren't seeing... Programming means to tell the computer what to do, Asimo is just running the script and imagination is NOT running from a script, and the paradox is that you can't program a computer to not do what it's told... so you can't tell asimo to not be told what to do
He can tell how far away people are by how big they are, i wonder if a small kid would throw him off. and he can't tell where the sounds come from when the guy has the head set on. and yea he does say mini pooper
i feel kinda sorry for him, the way he moves and speaks and recognizes, its new instead of programmed. If robots can be human than this is the closest one has got so far
I will consider it a true consious robot when it can have a conversation on its own and invent new words. But this is a step in the right direction. It simmilar to Einstein the parrot. he knew what a bannana was, was and what a blueberry was, but he had never learned what a grape was called. So when he wanted one, he reached for it and said, "give me nanaberry." He had made his own word for what he wanted out of parts of words he already knew that were simmilar to the object.
Sounds a bit strange, but James 'should' have given ASIMO the toys a form of reward after identifying them. Let the little guy play a bit, you hairy, cruel British man!
@mtdeezy no. somewhere along the line, every single thing he does has been programmed by man. when he sees something close by, he has been told to look at it, to reach at it and to attempt to identify it. this is not a living being. its software and electronics
the female "gynoids" all have a little strange look for me. dont know why. and when the (male&female) smile, it looks verry creepy) but anyway, its fantastic where the robotics went from the first robots to today.
But that is the NATURE of A. I. ! It can LEARN. past a point of critical-mass, you have a point of awareness in the universe, called:a consciousness. Any of you remember when you wer one or two years old? I rest my case!
Ok and what is the "concept of imagination" ? O_o imagination isn't a concept lol it's just the opposite of that that's why you can't program a computer to have imagination because it's not as simple as a concept
rtm1137, I don't know what to do with you. You are sound like another victim from Hollywood movie. Every one dosen't need to know or we don't need to know terminator. OK ?!

Is from a "James May's Big Ideas" episode
@EmperorOfMars *the tiny little arm from R2 comes out of ASIMO's head and pokes the hand*
You could have a small team of 5-7 asimos working in tandem build your house for you in less than a month.
Asimo needs a hug...
Asimo is soon cute. The latest version of him that came out in 2011 can open a container, poor drinks, jump on one foot and both feet, use sign language, run at 9km/h, etc. He is pretty cool and cute.

I can't wait till there's an Asimo in every home!
$125,000 USD for your own Cylon. With a built in Learning CPU, with neural-net.
thanks for sharing this videos...new friend here ..wathing now...thanks
it really needs a sense of touch
poor asimo. they teach him the robot toy its his grandpa.
@Grandeur001 I am thinking that is a signal. When asimo moves its hand show that it is running algorithms of interest to recognition or learning the object.
this is like a fucking movie!
so amazing. alone from this behaviour one can interpret so much more "conscioussness" in this machine, because it behaves more humanlike.
it felt a bit like i had the wish to protect it and make him feel comfortable.
those eyes!
ANd we are now venturing into the world of A.I and AGI. What a world!
Have you seen the HRP-4C? It's a very slender humanoid robot with a skin covered head and articulated face, exactly like what you're discussing.
that was awesome! couldnt think of anyone better than cpt slow to be in it! :))
Incrível!! Cada vez mais eu amo a Ciência...
Contact HONDA, or TOYOTA. I love droids. Since the early 1960s.
why do the arms raise ?
@Haloya101 probably the same way he could tell that the stool was a type of chair. Certain properties.
what show was this from
ホンダっていいよね。カブもASIMOも夢が詰まってるもん。
is it really only 125.000usd cause this would be pretty afordable for that kind of technology
Yes, but since the robot is only attuned to certain keywords to get its attention (plus the fact that someone behind the scenes could be muting it), it is in all probability that the robot does not know what it is.
that's preprogramed eye and finger scanners,
asimo is learning through its ears and eyes not through additional progaming.
imagine a mix from the "new" asimo (for bodymovement and so on) and these japanese facial "robots" that sometimes look real scary (real - but scary =) (Eva, Actroid, Jules....)

I do like James May, but I'd love to see Asimo look at him and say "Captain Slow" :D
i don't know about ever, about 100 years ago people believed no one could fly we cant even start to comprehend what we might achieve thousands of years in the future. our bodies are machines as well, made of organic matter but it can be replicated ... eventually but not in the near future.
AMAZING!!
that is very scary and of course would become gainfull at long term
Cant wait to see how robots have developed in 50 years. Persocoms ftw.
i don't have any idea what that cost but that new asimo must cost many millions dollars
Whoa....this is skynet in the early stages people :-)
Have these guys never seen terminator?
The accents of the German Engineers - LOL!!! :D
It can learn things, maybe It can judge situation or object by its progrmmed algorithms, It can repeat things and move in the space it has never been before... BUT it CAN'T CREATE!!! Only human has a creative mind! No robot will have that ability... EVER!
LOL, Is he saying mini pooper? I swear he is saying mini pooper! HAHAHAHAHA
I think he is the most cutest thing ^_^

I love ASIMO's body language.
its great and at the same time scary, someday robots will look back at this videos of us humans showing them how to see the world and think. How will they think of us? as their fathers or something?
amazing.
but he isnt paying attention to what the object looks like. he is hearing what it is but doesnt no the exact object.
I know you're right, the "intelligence" these people are seeing in Asimo's behavior is the intelligence of the people who programmed him... there's a paradox here that people aren't seeing... He did say mini POOPER... lol
top gear? maybe
0:40
*analyzing for weakness in human hand*
He can tell how far away people are by how big they are, i wonder if a small kid would throw him off. and he can't tell where the sounds come from when the guy has the head set on. and yea he does say mini pooper

i freaking love Asimo :D
so cute.! so cute.! just like a little baby .! :)
that's just scary...
I WANT ONE!!!!!
I will consider it a true consious robot when it can have a conversation on its own and invent new words. But this is a step in the right direction.

Asimo needs more colors on its face
exactly what i was thinking
Asimo FTW
I want ask to asimo ''what you think about the life?''XD
SUPER!!!
@mtdeezy no. somewhere along the line, every single thing he does has been programmed by man. when he sees something close by, he has been told to look at it, to reach at it and to attempt to identify it. this is not a living being. its software and electronics
I want one of that in my life xD
is there any better robot in world :D
the female "gynoids" all have a little strange look for me. dont know why. and when the (male&female) smile, it looks verry creepy)
but anyway, its fantastic where the robotics went from the first robots to today.
nice toy, but i bet it's pretty expensive...
Haha, Mini Pooper.
but he could build me a house and give me even more after this i mean this is too afordable lol
Cute :3
"mini pooper"
But that is the NATURE of A. I. ! It can LEARN. past a point of critical-mass, you have a point of awareness in the universe, called:a consciousness. Any of you remember when you wer one or two years old? I rest my case!
seriously not to some immature kid it actually sound like he said mini pooper
i wonder if anyone from the future has come to destroy asimo...
Moving...
We are Dead!! WE ARE ALL DEAD!!
Mini Pooper
mini pooper lol
Yes, Me.
Poor, Is like a child, he want to take everything sees... :)
Ok and what is the "concept of imagination" ? O_o imagination isn't a concept lol it's just the opposite of that that's why you can't program a computer to have imagination because it's not as simple as a concept
this is sooooooo fucking creepy
...
lol wow...
you aren't robot
rtm1137, I don't know what to do with you. You are sound like another victim from Hollywood movie. Every one dosen't need to know or we don't need to know terminator. OK ?!
I really don't like the idea of clever robots...
