      around 80$ give or take.

      if they were mass produced, 80$ a pop? i think you're overshooting it a little.

    This is the coolest thing I've seen in ages. I'm a fountain pen collector. I never use ballpoints. But I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Love it. BTW, if you had an online shop you could sell those pens, and those wooden bowls all day long.

    That pen looks _sick_. I've never turned stainless before, but I wanna give this project a go, could make some christmas gifts. Plus, there's no reason this would have to be a pen, a nice carbide scribe could be cool

    • @intjonmiller
      @intjonmiller 8 років тому +4

      Just use an appropriate tool geometry, very sharp, and don't let the tool dwell in any spot (let it spin without moving the carriage, cross-slide, or compound) because stainless work-hardens very easily.

    • @robmckennie4203
      @robmckennie4203 8 років тому +1

      Jon Miller if you know about turning stainless maybe you can help me a bit more. I got some stainless (run of the mill stuff, 305 I think?), and it machines awesome with hss, but i chipped 3 edges on 2 carbide inserts, inserts the distributor says are fine for stainless. I wasn't taking any kind of ridiculous cut, and I've gotten quite satisfactory results from these inserts in mild steel and 4140. Any tips or tripping points you know of when cutting stainless with carbide?

    • @intjonmiller
      @intjonmiller 8 років тому +1

      I haven't done much stainless yet. Was it an interrupted cut? That's what often does in the carbide inserts. HSS is more resilient there. To be honest I have precious little carbide experience as my lathe has a leather belt that prevents me from getting enough power to the headstock to make use of them. I really need to dip the timing belt conversion.

    • @robmckennie4203
      @robmckennie4203 8 років тому +1

      Justin S I was thinking of a metalworking scribe, marking gauges usually scribe a parallel line a fixed distance from an edge

    very impress with your pen. and with your idea of using a lathe as a mill... great job!

    • @intjonmiller
      @intjonmiller 8 років тому +4

      That's how milling was invented. The lathe came first. Then various attachments to allow greater movement of the workpiece in the same positions he used in this video. Then they made the horizontal mill, which is just a modified version of a lathe, and ultimately the vertical mill. Just a logical progression of getting the machines to do incrementally more. :)

    • @Jer_Schmidt

      The materials cost more than that

    • @dimasebastian8314

      Jeremy Schmidt then you can sell it for much more than that,that's why i put "at least" i suppose you can even change the materials,for example you can use aluminium instead of steel.i dunno,if you make a contract with a company,you can even get a pretty big discount when buying materials,i'd give around 50 dollars for this tbh

    • @Jer_Schmidt

      Sure. But you could try doing a bit of math before you commit. Consider how much time this took (in hours), then multiply that by how much a machinists time is worth per hour. Add about $12 for materials. If you still want it, then sure I'll make you one.

    • @sandollor
      @sandollor 8 років тому

      Jeremy Schmidt Mate, I was talking about the many/mass produced pens from maxmadco. I know how production works; it's always more expensive to make single items or very low runs. I guess I'm under the impression that those pens were made in higher numbers and the markup is just high because that is the lower end of the market value for metal bolt action pens.
      Of course the pen you made I would not have sold for less than $100, but that makes sense. I enjoyed the video, you do great work.

    • @Jer_Schmidt
      @Jer_Schmidt  8 років тому +2

      +MetraMan09
      Contextual value is difficult to calculate...so I'm not sure about that. But I would make you one like it for $800. The second one would be worth no less to me than the original, but I see how it could be worth more to a viewer!

    Love your videos man, been binge watching them since a couple days. One thing on this one though, you might want to make a habit of removing the chuck key from the lathe chuck (as seen at about 11:50). I'm sure you know why, but if not, put a remote switch on the lathe, put the key in, exit the room, turn it on and come back. Only do this if you have a 2nd key, because you might not even find it at all anymore..

    Wow. Never really stopped to think about how much work goes into writing utensils, but this really opened that up. Absolutely gorgeous pen! Wish I had one for myself haha I'll have to send this to a friend of mine with a garage workshop, he's got the same problem with breaking pens and could probably the inspiration. :)

    Jeremy, I really like your pen, it boggles the mind why the professionals have never thought of something like this. If you were to give me a choice of which of your inventions to buy first I think it would be your CNC machine. I really like your lathe, looks very antique.

    Amazing. Not only was the pen a whole lot of work, I bet setting up the cameras and editing all that footage down took a long time, too! Great stuff.

    Jer this was unexpectedly cool... As a wood worker metal work seems to have a lot of similarities but just more precise and controlled. Enjoyed! Might have to get a metal lathe.

      You're right, they are similar. Just that metal takes a lot more force to cut and his a lot slower!
