Makes me realise all over again how beautiful some of that rail journey is, and not just the obvious "scenic" bits by the coast - the Taupo swamp, the Waikanae hills, and the beautiful farmland and "wilder areas" - it's an undervalued journey, in my humble opinion, whichever way you're going......

sat with the driver in 1955 with the bogies being so far back from the cab thought we were going to derail on every curve and the air pressure going into the tunnels would blow you away but what a ride lost my wallet but the driver bought it out to me at Massey great days

Why hasn't the Electrification been extended all the way up to Palmerston North?

There were two main reasons - cost and compatibility, but there is talk of this happening. Since Labour has come into power and has a focus on rail over roads they're looking at all different options including electrifying Palmerston North to Wellington, the section between Te Rapa (the northern most point of the main trunk electrification as it stands today) and Auckland and possibly the East Coast Main Trunk from Hamilton through to Tauranga. Along with this the EF locos would be modified so they could run on the main trunk (25 kV AC) or the Wellington section (1500 V DC) meaning they could travel anywhere within the electrified areas. Presently they will only run on 25 kV.
