Suprised to see you giving a listen to Yusef, nice Jammin'! My memories of Yusef are from when he was a part of the Cannonball Adderly Sextet in the 1960s great Tenor & Flute player.
I get that same feeling too JJ. Kinda sounds like it would be in an old crime movie, or maybe part of the soundtrack of a Shaft movie. I looked him up to see if he did 70's scores after listening to this. I ended up listening to his album The Gentle Giant. The primary instrument he played was flute and it totally gave the vibe of that early 70's era. Nice n chill, I liked it.
Jazz Master 🎼🔥🎷🔥🎼 Actually we do know what the song is conveying It was released in 1968 The country was on edge…. The Viet Cong ( the North Vietnamese) had unleashed the Tet offensive which killed the most American soldiers since the Vietnam war began Dr. King was assassinated Black communities across the country were rioting in response to MLK’s killing Robert F Kennedy was assassinated And more Americans were taking to the streets protesting the Vietnam War That year was so chaotic no one knew where the country was headed!!! 60’s Jazz musicians went hard on political messages Ya need to check out Jazz Master Max Roach’s album We INSIST!!! ( on our Freedom that is) Two great civil rights song on the album are Freedom NOW!!! And Driva Man ( about the slave overseers ) These songs shocked white audiences back in 1960 the year of the albums release Because they were so in your face!!! And it didn’t end there In 1973 Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison released A Message from the Tribe Going hard in the Post passage of the Civil Rights Bills in 64 & 65 Their songs What Now??? And What we Need!!! Were a call out to the Man letting him know There was a Note due our people and we were coming for Payment now that we had full rights as citizens here in the USA The song’s convey perfectly the mindset of we African Americans and what our demands were at the height of the Black Power Movement I just turned 62 and I’m so grateful to have been alive at that time because we were the first generation of African Americans born with Full Citizenship in the country our ancestors had been building for 400yrs What a great and blessed time to live!!! And while not everything turn out perfect and we still have a ways to go ( Cmon your generation don’t drop the Ball!!) It was the time we told the Country We ain’t NEVER going back to what was!!!
Music at it's finest. ❤❤
