The White House, FBI and Homeland Security said on Thursday (December 12) they had no evidence that drone sightings reported in New Jersey posed national security or safety threats, despite concerns raised by lawmakers.
Since mid-November, residents of New Jersey have spotted large and medium-sized objects flying around their neighborhoods. Some were also spotted in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Staten Island.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it began receiving reports of drone activity near Morris County, New Jersey, on Nov. 18.
New Jersey resident Paul Gerke, who has been documenting the phenomenon, described the drones as flying at varying heights, some of them resembling small planes but with unusual lighting and flying too close to each other. Gerke reported that some of these drones emitted a loud noise resembling a jet engine, and stayed airborne for long durations, ranging from 6 to 10 hours. Gerke has observed these drones flying from east to west over his house and has recorded some of their movements.
The Pentagon has said an initial assessment had shown the drones were not from another country. It said the U.S. military had not shot them down because they did not pose a threat to military installations.
About six craft with red and green blinking lights were seen passing over Delaware County in suburban Philadelphia on Thursday evening, about 10 miles (16.09 km) from the Philadelphia airport, according to a Reuters witness. Posts on social media by people in the area reported seeing what they believed to be drones.
On Wednesday, U.S. senators representing New Jersey and New York sent a letter to the heads of the FBI, DHS and the Federal Aviation Administration, demanding a briefing on how the agencies are working to identify and address the sightings.
