Switched to DJI digital last August and haven’t looked back. I wear glasses with my DJI goggles without issue and latency and signal penetration is great. I can fly digital where I could only dream of flying before on analog.
@GivesNoFux FPV Sorry I should have clarified. I can fly digital in and around obstructions way better on digital than on analog. No doubt analog is still the way to go for very long range beyond 4 miles.
also made the switch to digital after 4 years with analog. Agree with everything you are saying, digital is king, and you can also live stream from it if you have the smart controller. Steele say that most pro pilots use analog, BS, maybe racers, but all that does FPV filming gigs are switching to digital. I have done filming gigs and trust digital over analog anyday. Also have done streaming gig becuase of the digital picture, could never score those with analog. Steele is connected with TBS and their bread and butter is crossfire and VTX, so of course he's gonna recommend analog
I agree 100% I have a very strong Rx in my glasses. One of the reasons I stayed with my box goggles for years was I could use them with glasses. When I found out that the DJI goggles were higher video quality and worked with my glasses I figured out how to get a pair. I haven't looked back. They may not be for everyone, but they work very well for me, and the analog input allows me to fly my other craft and whoops. I fly with much more confidence now.
Same here. I've been flying analog multirotors for about 10 years. The first day I flew a DJI equipped quad, I flew lower, faster, hit smaller gaps and flew further out of LoS than I had in those previous 10 years. I also wear them over glasses without issue, and I always find there's plenty of warning when I'm approaching the limits. I've only had them "just cut out" about 3 times in a 1000 flights and that's when I was purposely pushing beyond the warnings. I go out and fly new unfamiliar places with less stress than analog, simply because if I can see small obstacles (ghost branches, wires, etc) then I can avoid them. I don't have the reflexes of Steele, but I now I don't need them. It felt like flying FPV for the first time again. Keep in mind Steele still flies a 600TVL CCD camera with relatively poor WDR, and there are CMOS cameras that provide lower measured latency then his favorite Runcam Swift 2, so he's not really even seeing the best that analog has to offer. His attachment to live audio from the quad might be a factor too (since neither DJI nor Byte Frost offer that).
After years of flying analog, I switched to DJI last December. It was the best FPV investment I've ever made. My flying has improved significantly, because I can see the fine details of where I'm going (scraggle). And multipath penetration is incredible. My analog quads are sitting on the shelf.
The analog system will continue to be a good option for those who like tiny woops, racing, flying with many friends and risky flights. The digital system is great, but for more restricted applications, solo flying and smoother flying. I still prefer the analog system as I don't intend to keep both systems at the same time.
From my DJI experience: 1. DJI goggles when something is blocking the signal, you will notice "pixelated" on screen at 1st and become more and more follow the sign, it won't turn off completely itself in sudden, the signal bar is very reliable and predictable. Average FPV 5min flight time can't go that far until the screen turns off itself unless flight more than 6.5Km open air 2. Downside: no lives audio on DJI googles, but playback the air unit videos are just fine. 3. Freestyle probably won't notice any latency problem (real-world latency 2x-4x ms) this is very fine just like in online shooting game. DJI is provided Low latency mode and focus mode for the player who needs low latency. 4. many bugs are fixed from few updates including the latency and OSD on the screen 6. The DJI's radio signal is more predictable than other 3rd party radio; it won't give a spike in a sudden and cause nearly failsafe. I owned the T16 Pro+(Crossfire Full size"500mw"+Diamond Antenna). Many time I flew over trees in 200meter away just give me a spike (Drone stall about 0.2-0.3 seconds), and the latency is noticeable too it makes me feels unsafe, this is why I switched back to DJI remote for more predictable, better latency and stick feels. 7. The drone has cost a few hundred. And the flight confidence with a more unobstructed view and reliable signal bar is essential, as many analogue videos almost hit the power line, tree stick because a sudden snowflake on-screen cause nearly to crash. 8. DJI transmitter can pick up to 1200mw if you need. 9. You will see the quality of build when dissembling the DJI google and radio, not like the hundreds dollar analogue google or clone radio out there, there are how empty below the cover, and feels low quality when holding. To me, a few hundred dollars for the analogue technologies is overpriced. It's not worth to spend so much on analogue TV instead of Digital TV. Analogue will be going outdated if digital become more advance in the coming future. 10. You can use a 3rd party strap with DJI goggles as well, But I tried and it's not holding well and comfortable than the stock strap did.
I'd say if someone is looking to get into FPV right now, digital makes sense if you're going for a top tier setup. The DJI goggles give you the flexibility to run both digital and analog with an external receiver (which you'd need to buy with fatsharks anyway) and also a better DVR than the top tier Fatshark goggles.
I agree, you have that flexibility and even if digital doesn't work out, you can put an external receiver module on and run analog instead. Given the choice of a fatshark goggle, which is stuck on crappy analog, or the DJI goggle, which supports both analog and digital for a slightly higher price, it seems the obvious choice to pick the DJI goggle. Me, not having that kind of money, do not have either, but when I eventually do make the purchase will probably go for digital.

There's also the whole supporting a piece of shit company that stole open source code and made billions while destroying the hobby that created said open source tech but, I know most people don't care about that part.

Some of your conclusion statements are incorrect. - 720P is in fact "HD" - You CAN fly with multiple people on HD, as long as you know how. Rotor Riot did a video with 8 pilots in the air at the same time. All on DJI's HD system. Same goes for HD and analog at the same time. You just have to do frequency management and space the pilots apart some. - The signal does NOT just magically disappear. You get pixelation first, increased latency, and a visual cue of video bandwidth, before the signal drops completely. Don't stand in the way of progress. You don't fly FM or PCM radios, do you? No... you fly DIGITAL radios. There were growing pains with that as well, back in the early 2000's. Digital video is the future, but here today!
Lets say we have radio issues for an very brief moment (200-500ms?) - Sparks and shit then gives me a "ouuuuuh-moment", but all flying is fine. (analog). - The latency/packetloss issue that would occur in this moment displaces my whole handling of the quad and probably gives a 500-1000ms time to resync the brain after the issues have ended. (digital). The dji googles and digital are so much better if you fly open trees or open proximity in close range (playground), open field or clear view long range. Remember once you go digital you will never be able to go back I think. Very good to begin with when you fly more open and un-tight where you can abort all the time. But once you get good at flying, it's hard to do stuff you can do with analog in a confident way unless you keep the flying open and "slower"/safer. Orqa/HDO2 with tbs vtx for medium range proximity or stuff between you and the receiver gives confidence where digital cannot deliver.
@@peterpunch1 Interesting. Recently I watched a video and the people in the comments said the exact opposite. It seems to me that digital is not yet ready for competition flying and possibly long range, but for most other things it seems fantastic. The main point I took from those comments is that the HUGELY increased visual quality will make flying easier for newbies, they will be more confident in trying new things and therefore they will learn faster. Which is a very important factor. Oh, and one more thing. DJI visual quality can be so good, that it gives you a better flying experience, closer to something like a computer game. Fuzzy analog signal on small screens gives me the feel of some Russian cold war era military tech designed for operating in extreme conditions rather than tech for consumer enjoyment. GoPro flying footage is usually amazing, but seeing the analog feed has no immersion. When I finally looked at some reviews of the DJI FPV system (a year after release), I was shocked at the incredible visual quality increase compared to analog systems. It looks like you are there in the air :-)
DJI goggles take optical lens :) And video link doesn't break instantly: often quicker than analog, right, but beside the info in the OSD (including a red icon), the sides of the image get more blurry, quality will decrease and ultimately the framerate will drop, before it goes black. I've got both, I keep flying analog, especially for tinies and toothpicks, I understand all the arguments for analog (still got 2 analog 5"), but when I have the choice (most of the time), I go for DJI for a simple reason : it is such a pleasure to have a beautiful video feedback without any glitch. I needed 20 packs to get used to, then I started to enjoy them more and more. Never had to complain about latency either, but I'm just an average pilot. While DJI behaves pretty badly in the forest, in a "metalic environement" it gives great results. The lack of live audio and of an HDMI Output (shamely reserved to the Smart Controller) is a pain in the ass. But quality got me I guess ;)
DJI break up is so much more manageable than Analog. Really wonder as to how much Steele has flown it recently as there has been a lot of changes. The 1200mw hack sends me much further than analog ever could. I also never notice the latency but I used to fly a Caddx Ratel which also had latency so maybe I was already used to it.
This is because Digital likes reflections it just makes more data for the system to put back together and also why all DJI reviews are all in reflective bando type environments. I tried it once in the woods and was shocked as to how shit it is and also at the box goggle feel and over compressed image i work in TV and it isn't even a good 720 image let alone HD as people like to call. Fly Orqa with Foxeer toothless cams and it's awesome I had to change all my cams as the micro eagle weren't up to par with these goggles
Exactly.... the biggest reason I switched to digital (dji system) is because IT WORKS 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME! Analog fpv is not for someone who: doesnt like fixing shit that doesn't work properly half the time or doesnt have endless funds to constantly repurchase the same parts over and over. I agree with much of Steele's comments here. DJI is absolutely trying to corner the market. No doubt. However, at the end of the day I ran out of patience and funds routinely flying analog.
gboulter I haven’t tried the woods yet but that’s a good point. DJI likes reflections, makes perfect sense. I was actually a step away from buying the Orqa’s and then these came out of nowhere. Feel really bad for companies like Orqa and Fatshark. I deff agree that the picture is more like a clean 480p than 720p but the quality is much better in 4:3 than 16:9. On top of that the 60fps live feed also brings that quality out. Overall though flying without a flicker is a dream world. DJI has done what was almost deemed impossible in the FPV community. I wish Fatshark or someone else could’ve stepped up and realize they don’t have the R&D funds but this visual upgrade has been needed. Analog is old hardware and we need that new new.
Steele you should realy update your DJI FPV gear and thest it a few days again... it has changed a lot since the end of 2019 and its realy consistent in latency now and the coverage of the fpv feed is sooooooo much better than analog. dont get me wrong, i still fly analog and enjoy it because its so simple and versatile but when i put on my digital googles again i still cant belive what im seening sometimes :) no hate and much love from Germany :P
he doesnt earn money in the digital world because it is propietary. Mr Steele has vtx's and fpv cameras with his name on them... that is why he is not digital yet. He actually flies digital when noone is watching xD

Great review, thank you Mr Steele. Personally I've switched from Fatshark to DJI and its made my analogue equipment redundant on all but my tiny whoop drone. Picture quality was always a disappointment to me with analogue, digital is like switching your TV from a 1970's set to a 2015 set. The experience of flying is soooo much better for me. I do get that the top pilots still fly analogue due to latency but for me I won't be competing on the world stage and the DJI system is perfectly suitable my capabilit (and probably 99% of pilots). I believe even the top guys will race just as competitively if they're all using digital. You could compare switching your petrol car to a Tesla. Old school will always find issue with the new technology but over time everyone will make the switch. If you're new to the hobby I'd recommend digital from day one, you'll never need to make that switch and the pain of having some fairly expensive investment being made redundant.
This latency thing is a bit embarrassing for him, he flies at 30fps lol. One sec/30 is a base latency of 33ms. And you have to add the latency of the camera to it. Dji at 120fps has always a latency of less than 30ms, lens to display.
@@dav77h Walking down a stair while someone is turning the lights on and off is just fine and you will continue walking. Walk down a stair and your vision is either very briefly stopped/titled or not in sync with what you feel and expect and you will either fall or intuitively stop to stabilize. I flew updated DJI the other week and its so much better than analog in every way except for the way extreme but very brief signal quality issues are handled. This is unfortunally a gamebreaker if you fly where these things happen, very much the spots were Steele flies. At these brief moments: Analog = "frames" are of very poor quality but the timing is constant and therefore image quality comes back in a way the brain expects to and your sense of soaring through the spot is not interfered. Digital = Frames timing gets altered and I believe that for all/most humans the possibility for the brain to predict how the quad continues moving and make stick corrections while being mostly blind is instantly removed. It also removes the possibility to just continue at the very instant image is good again as if no image disruption had occured. The visual input to the brain works in streams and the brain does marvels filling in the gaps, but it requires so little to make it tilt. You can get this tilt under certain conditions on rapidfire mode 1 as well when it has trouble mixing the sources. Digital is the future and I love it but I cannot fly it confident with the "I am one with the quad feeling" when you do tight flying with lots of hard targets. I would hold back, fly less aggressive/flat or go fly more open because I could not manage the crashes 😂
@@dav77h ive not gotten into FPV drones yet but i play some competitive video games and for me under 60 fps is unplayable, and FPV is more fast paced so i have no clue how a professional FPV pilot could honestly say 30fps is fine, i dont think i could use analog because 144hz monitor spoiled me and if im playing a game where i get 90 on average then jump to 110 its night and day, im happy that DJI has 120 fps tho, ill definitely go digital for my first drone
OK... If you fly like Mr Steele, and needs a gazzillionth of a second in latency, so for god sake buy analog. I have analog, and the DJI system, but i cant seem to notice any lag/breakups at all. Of course, im an old man and doesn`t have the reflexes i use to have, but i think most of you will find the latency on digital more then good enough. After i started using digital, my analog setup is resting peacefully on my wall. ;)
I find it's all about the range when flying. Brake up vs latency, Take your pick. Both have their good points. One thing for sure. Either system is yet perfect, and there is plenty room for improvement in both realms.
6 months ago I have started to FPV, directly with DJI, and all my friends laughing that analog is the best, yesterday, I have finished my analog building. Really it was disappointing, with Fatshark, tbs Crossfire, and diamond Antenna ,how I spent my money in Analog. Then I switched to my DJI, it's really game changer. I am happy with DJI, and I respect other decisions.

Analogue before I had digital: Yeah this looks blurry but I can cope its ok. Breakup feels dodgy and disturbing with static and flickering. Got digital: This looks so nice and sharp and latency is a non issue. Breakup is nicer and it just goes a little blocky. Analogue after digital: I can't do this it's like sand in my eyes. Agh horrible flickering. No just no.
Literally my first set just looking in was digi. Tried analog and it wasn't not doable, just not as enjoyable. I blame it on the sim. Digi looks more like a sim. But I certainly wouldn't break the bank for it. My issue is 💯 as he explains. 500 for goggles r 650 for everything
Lol looks like a sim? What does that even mean? Steele makes some casual observations about digital but then he flies analogue exclusively. It certainly does not just cut off to black without warning unless you block the signal with impenetrable obstructions in non line of sight situations, have a known bad firmware revision or go beyond 6.5KM which considering it advertises 4KM max range is acceptable. Assuming line of sight at less than 6.5KM you get a reducing of bitrate then beyond 6.5KM it will disconnect. If money is your concern then just get a cheapo Eachine EV800D headset with cheapo Eachine VTX and stick to analogue. High end analogue is definitely more expensive though look at the cost of Orca goggles at $649 where as the DJI googles are at $409 see getfpv website. You can get a Caddx Vista for 100 bucks now which is only 10 bucks more than a Foxeer Predator 4 + TBS Unify + TBS Triumph plus the Vista does 1200mW which is 400mW more than the Unify's 800mW. The majority of people will never fly beyond 4KM let alone 6.5KM. So many times in the past I tried to get friends into FPV then they lost interest the moment they saw how low grade the analogue quality is. Since getting digital I have managed to get two friends to take interest and they both commented on how juicy the quality looks and how appealing it is.

Steele, analog is yesterday newspaper, I started analog 2 years ago and I have been flying DJI hd since 6 months ago, and i will never go back ( at least for my 5' quads) I did the analog conversion to fly my 3' or whatever but honestly, everytime I fly analog I feel like "eww this is CRAP', and i do have Rapid fire and tbs 800mw which is kinda of the best in analog world.., long story short, for me, with all due respect with my fellow pilots, analog sucks now

I am just getting in this hobby but I haven't flown yet, just putting the necessary parts together searching and learning things about FPV, so I have no experience with both of the systems. But as far as I watched and searched and learned, I can say from an objective perspective that, for anyone who wants to fly an FPV Quad to freestyle and/or race, an analog setup which is picked precisely and smartly is the best setup to have. The digital needs more time to be improved and beat the analog and dominate the FPV sector, that is how the technology works, right? One day the digital will be at a level that it has a high definition video quality with a reaaaaalyyyy low latency and more features than analog has.

You're right Steele, as soon as camera movement gets too fast with DJI, the images gets shitty. But If you're a beginner and wanna buy goggles, HD is 100% the way to go!
Great Info here Mr. Steele. I just ordered the DJI system a few days ago. I am that guy that just wants to go fly by himself. I like cinematic stuff. I mostly fly drones/whoops that can record HD, I can’t look at that analog recording anymore 🤷🏻♂️. I have been flying for a few years and never got into cross fire, so range was 💩. So upgrading to DJI gives me plug & play longer range and better video for precise flying.
Did you ever do a video for optimizing analog ? I know you’ve said before most of us who switched to digital probably just had shitty analog set ups/builds (highly probable) curious as sense switching to digital I don’t have nearly as many random issues that I had with analog . hope your able to make it go gridlife alpine horizon this year
Slick Six I've got an Apex with the ImpulseRC OSD and power regulator and it changes absolutely everything. If you wire it up as they instruct the feed is pristine with amazing sound quality. I'm flying KISS now but I had it working with a BF FC at first too
I have the vtx and the camera soldered on the same ground, tried to find the best channels for the antennas I have and the feed is pretty much noiseless. Obviously its not near digital or with that much resolution and definition but it's clear
this one i agree with steele, it depends on what type of flying you are into. If you explore more places, then analog might be more reliable. but then i also love the quality of dji video esp if it works, and the constant feedback via updates in their firmware. but then again, im a poor bloke, so i stick with my skyzone and just focus on my flying. i remember a video with vanouver, getting issues with latency
You made great points. I switched to DJI last August and haven't looked back. But I fly solo and don't race and only have two quads: 5" Apex with vista and a 3" 2S toothpick which is analog, but when the nebula comes out I'll just build a heavy 3" or light 4" and be 100% digital.
personally i have no issue knowing when my signal is getting low on dji. i think some people just are stuck with the idea that its the same as it was 6 months ago. its really easy to see my bitrate and know the magic number for me, which is right around 10mb, once it gets to that i know that if i turn around it will drop to around 7 and thats the minimal i ever wanna see because then it will start stuttering. in order to have usable analog imo you NEED rapidfire and a unify or rush etc. becasue cheap analog is so bad i wouldnt recommend it to even the newest pilots. and if im gonna spend 700 on a video setup and i dont race i dont see any reason not to buy dji.
I have both and I love both. I think DJI isn´t expensive take fatshark HDO2 and a good Cam and VTX and you´r near to the price of DJI. But that´s true you can start in the beginning with a very cheap analog setup and have fun !!!
I wouldn't think I'll be able to correct Mr Steele in FPV related stuff ever... But it happened now! Digital FPV system from DJI does NOT loose signal without prior warnings in form of degraded image quality (very easily visible to the pilot)!!! Especially focus mode is pretty good in this (actually better than analog), because it deteriorates the sides of the video feed sooner keeping the center clear (without digital artifacts/blocks) as long as possible. You can very precisely tell when the signal is dangerously weak and turn back your drone safely. Even in the standard mode you can see digital artifacts/pixelation/blocks in the video feed long before you loose the signal completely. I understand that top freestyle pilots like Mr Steele and FPV racing community cannot switch to digital just yet, but they should realize they have a limited capability of looking at the matter from beginner's or a hobby pilot stand point. Finally Mr. Steele should better test a new system before saying something so untrue as he did in this video about the digital FPV system from DJI.
i wouldnt call it a "latency issue" aswell it sounds way worse then it is its from 10-15ms on analog to 25-30ms on digital yes its worse but for 50x the better picture? start talking about numbers and not just say: "the latency is bad so its bad" makes me mad
Flew 3 packs on a friend's DJI setup. One of those 3 packs had the image lock up/freeze just as I was taking off. Just completely locked up as if I hadnt been moving. Problem is I was armed and I could not hear the quad flying because DJI has no onboard audio. I was beginning to move/fly when I finally heard the quad/props and I disarmed. My friend is one of those guys that keeps firmwares up to date so this wasnt some freshly bought old firmware from last year. I will admit that the HD was pretty to fly and I tested the HELL out of that DJI build putting it into spots that I have flown analog behind objects and even down into a drainage sump that was below ground and out of visual/signal LOS to see how break up was. But it is simply not ready in my book in that I dont trust it entirely. I would rather have analog which shows me problems much sooner than the way the DJI setup does.

Top end analog systems are more mature, running into their limits much longer than a year old digital system from DJI. I'm just calling out Mr. Steele for quite sever misinformation he put out! Based on your testing, did the image pixelate before you start feeling latency going bad to the point the drone is hard to bring back? Did you fly in focus mode (center of the image clear, sides much more susceptible to pixelation)? Did you use the DJI's controller or something else (of a known quality)? And yes, no audio is one of the downsides of the DJI system.

Interesting topic at a time i'm looking to upgrade goggles, DJI still probably not for me yet. I wonder if dji would prevent you(sometime in the future) from flying near no fly zones like they do with the mavic etc. Thoughts?
As i state in my own videos, digital makes more sense; It gives you ALOT more confidence when flying. When i went from analogue to digital, it freed up that part of my brain that kept worrying about all the stuff i couldnt really see; ghost branches, leafs, weird gaps, etc - and at the same time it made me WANT to go out and fly more - both because of the clearer image, but also because of every flight being an "aaaaah that was fun" moment, rather than a "jesus christ.. i hope ill learn this some day".
I am really new to the hobby and decided to jump straight in with Digital after 20+ hours on the Sim. I love how easy the setup is & I don't notice any latency (Maybe because I am so new to this). The only thing I wish DJI had was audio, I miss hearing the motors. Great video Steele, loving these updated How to's!
Steele, did your hand burn when you grabbed the DJI goggles? Put some TrueRC antennas on them, update the firmware, set the power to 1200mw and enjoy the digital world!!! And it’s only going to get better!!!! ✌️
2022. Horses for courses, as a beginner fpv(33 odd years in rc, fixed wing and heli), i found the Dji digital system adequate for my needs. You top performers where 5-10ms is a long time, would most def use top end analog. With that said, even the Dji air units are cheap, compared to the rx guiding systems(flybarless units in helis) we use in our giant scale craft. So glad i stepped into the fpv world, 3d flying with LOS is fun, 3d with fpv is just next level.
im getting back into the FPV game and after many weeks of deliberation, numerous conversations and a lot of back and forth... I went analog. thought it made the most sense for feasibility back into the world. can't say one is better than the other, it all depends what your trying to accomplish. once you answer that question, you'll have n problem making an educated decision.
For me, analog sets no limits on what kind of craft I can fly. I've also smashed my share of components so I can appreciate cost/flying time with analog. Also, every quad needs air unit and it's going to be a limiting factor on the size of fleet. So, I plan to build a good quality analog 'ecosystem' that works, is affordable, supports ~everything and when that is all set up, will add another tech tree (digital) to my gear setup. It's not either/or but in what order. Also, going all digital now would mean having a lot of money invested in 1st gen stuff. It'll be +gen 1 when I'm done with analog. And possibly be buying this gen1 stuff second hand, very very cheaply ;)
I got DomV2's when they hit, HDO's same. I waited for this FOREVER! I have both systems and have an analog to Dji part coming as well as a Dji pro controller with HDMI out, so I have the best of all worlds!
I went into this hobby with Fatshark's Attitude v6 + TBS fusion + Immersion RC SpiroNet v2 antenna bundle + Ethics earbuds. Costs more than DJI's fpv goggles but cheaper in the long run. Id feel more comfortable pushing my limits (repairing, modifying, flying, building) multiple $200 analog quads than doing the same on a $400 digital quad as a beginner.
Honestly it is tempting. BUT I am personnally waiting for the DJI digital system V2. Wait another 6 months and the units will be smaller, less latency. Or even better orqa or Skyzone will come out with their version. I would actually say this is NOT a good time to buy one. Just like this not the good time to buy a PS4. Sure, they are cheap, but they just want to get rid of stock...ofc if you are impatient, jump on it. I can wait still
DJI with Digidapter mod. Best of both worlds and cheaper than a set of HDO2s. Not sure if everyone dunking DJI knows this, but DJI fixed the analog latency issue like 6 months ago... you get ~20ms latency instead 0f 40-50ms when it was first released. Only real advantage of purely analog goggles is the size and form factor.
It was very interesting to watch you stepping over your own mishap with DJI and appreciate their work in developing this setup (I am too amazed by their efforts). Would you be able to convince MrSteele from five years ago to not go digital? Tesla Model 3 vs Lotus Elise parallel would fit better LOL I stay analogue - I love to see under the hood ;)

3.5yrs in the hobby. Analogue is the way I go - for most of my flights including long range. Short range with a particular shoot in mind, I’d probably (ok most definitely) bring the DJI 6S Cinewhoop quads. Signal breakup is horrendously delayed and “blocky” with digital in some situations. But that said analogue is fuzzy but you can still see some of the image when the situation gets a little sketchy. Just my $0.10 worth 😉

Small remark about DJI. In most of cases DJI FPV Glass do not simple lost picture. At the beginning quality of picture is decreased (it's like jump from 1024x768 to 640x480) also there is an icon with signal level. You may notice there signal level. If signal going to worse the Signal Level icon change color to red. It should be enough to turn back, More over there are situations when digital system works much better than analogue. Fore example if you fly in environment with a lot of metal. If do not think about differences digital and analogue take a look the glass quality. From my point of view, analogue top quality items are too expensive.

I am a pilot who enjoys flying and I imagine my flights like yours when i am flying. It is so much fun! A fantasy to be equal but fun none the less. The debate on analog and digital seems like a debate on vinyl and digital. If you have a great music system vinyl is superior in my opinion. Digital is way easier and convenient and if you have the great system it too works well to please the ears. I am an old guy tho, an audio file and a possessor of lots of music. Headboxes are an interesting option and possible solution for people with weird IPD or eyesight/glasses issues. Also super huge field of view... I went from fixed with a monitor to a FXT headbox to Fatshark HD2s. My flying ability increased with each change, monitor to a 16:9 headbox and things got better. Then went to 4:3 HD2s and got even better
I've been flying for 5 years and have 40ish quads I've built myself. (All which were analogue, now 10 are digital). Digital was the best investment I ever made and I've tried EVERYTHING! A newbie would be stupid to invest a cent in analogue. Your giving false and misleading information about these products to protect your own financial interests which is unfair and dishonest especially when new people see these videos and don't see through the bias and greed in your super opinionated statements.
Awesome video...but not forgetting. Digital video fpv has been used in the military for the last 15 years. All we,re getting is old military tech..which is still cool nonetheless.
Didn't talk about weight considerations. DJI Air Unit and even the Vista setup is still significantly heavier than analog--the weight difference is especially important on a small/micro build.
DJI has a purpose. I fly my HD2's for fun and freestyle, my DJI for 'cinematic' and multipath environments. Both have pluses and negatives..such is life 😄 Great video again Steele 👊🏼
This is the point. For FPV flying with high risk of crashing, track racing and tiny, the analog system is best. For exploratory, cinematic, smooth freestyle flight, the digital system is best. I prefer flights where the analog is more suitable.
Latency, the weight and size of the equipment, how the digital components fit into the existing analog ecosystem, affordability,. Yup, there are a lot of questions and early difficulties with digital FPV but all of them will be completely taken care of and understood in the coming years, and a lot faster than we could even guess right now. So it has always been with new advances and new technologies. When I was a kid, people used to say that you can't stop progress. We don't say that anymore, but it's still true. One thing is for sure; the FPV world will become digital, and my sense is that will happen in the short run, not the long run. Folks, people felt the same way when monoplanes started to become popular over biplanes, and when jets started to become the power plant of choice in aircraft. How about electric cars? Gasoline is dead as a fuel. It's only a matter of time for it to be the latest dinosaur. The same will be true of analog FPV before we know it. My advice to anyone at this point (at least those who could afford a top tier goggle setup right away) would be to get the DJI system, as well as a good analog receiver and the adapter to use it with the DJI goggles. And you won't have to cut on anything and void your warranty; there is a really good unit available which doesn't affect the DJI physical setup at all. You just hang your analog receiver on your head strap and feed the output to the Analog In port on the DJI goggles. It works like a champ and is very inexpensive (after the cost of the receiver). Be prepared to roll with the punch here, folks and get ready for the inevitable, because an FPV ecosystem, whether for racing or freestyle, in the future will be digital...count on it.

I hope GoPro comes with a camera that can be used for fpv which can transmit hd footage right of the Box..I use a hero 7 as fpv cam with a converter which is same as analog video but with wide fov.

Steele you can buy glasses from RHO-Lens in the range from -15 to +15 with cylinder from -6 to +6. So thats not a problem. I fly DJI and Orqa and for smooth flying DJi is perfect but for race I like the analog more.
TBH When I flew the DJI digital I was blown away by the image when the quad was on the ground and I first plugged in, but once I started flying around I really didn't notice that much as I was only focused on hitting my lines and gaps. Also with analog I have a little screen I can pass off to the kid at the park that walks up to me with an interest. As you stated, I am still not quite on board with a proprietary system. Not to mention the DIJ didn't fit very well.
SKIDOOSH my dude! It’s been a crazy year man 😬 DJI fpv is not for everyone, but it’s handy for situations where the analogue system isn’t enough to penetrate certain structures. That said - most of us carry a GoPro anyways 😂
Excellent point on the sharing the FPV feed. There are so many ways to share FPV on analog and to be able to do it for super cheap. The proprietary tech in DJI is obviously pretty damn good performance wise. But it also locks you into only approved retailers that are allowed to share the space like CADDX and the minimum advertised pricing is clearly keeping the air units to a specific price point. I love having pinky finger nail sized 200-400mw analog vtxs. I like having decent audio on board my drone to hear when I am flying and I might be 1.5 miles out on an Xclass rig while doing 80mph in a tail wind while only 4-5 feet off the ground. Analog for me for quite awhile. Not to mention it is a simple tech which is survivable into the distant future. We have the salad days of cheap FPV but with a couple shitty regs we could all be going back to the dark days of FPV where we were hacking wireless analog components to mount before any companies formed to do it for us.
@@ARI3S oh don't get me wrong. It's a great system! Just not quite there for me yet. Smaller, duel screen OLED goggles and a way to share my feed and I'm in. Just didn't like the giant box goggles and closed system.
Right now DJI's digital system is the only way to go for a person not already invested in an analog system. In saying that, I think the best overall setup right now is using DJI for fpv feed, and crossfire for radiolink, using your choice of radio.
I have to disagree with you in regards DJI googles form factor. My DJI googles fit like gloves, even with my glasses on. I can't do that with FATSHARKs
I bought both DJI FPV and HDO2s w Rapidfire and TBS Unify Pro. Both are great systems. But I have to say I really enjoy the DJI FPV system more, much more. I bought the IFlight Titan DC5 BNF. It was awesome to setup the system and fly in an hour or two. The DC5 is a fantastic machine w the F7. Locked in. The ability to get into flying really quite quickly and have an incredible machine w outstanding performance is the experience I've been waiting for. The analog system are not nearly as easy to get in the air as was the DJI IFlight BNF experience. So many great things to say about the DJI experience having been down both roads, analog and digital. If I were starting - DJI FPV IFlight BNF experience all the way.
I want to do head tracking for my airplanes. I think digital may be the way to go just to have nicer flight experience. I want to look at something nice. Can you extend the range and dabble in lower frequencies witht eh DJI gear?

However, coming from the DJI camera drone world, wherein I have become boooored, I would only venture into the FPV because of the DJI system. Many of us looked at FPV over the years, and while very much interested in the performance of the FPV drones, we could not tolerate the analog display. Many of us just want to fly, and spend less time figuring it all out - what goes with what. Plug and play with a great display is all we want. Please do a follow up to this video one year from the date of this release. Where might you stand, then?
I'm still learning about FPV and I hope to buy my first FPV drone soon. I'd like to do free fly or freestyle and filming cars. I probably watched 20+ videos already and read multiple articles and I'm still not sure what to buy. But every time I see analog footage I can't figure out how they even know where they are flying. I'd like to enjoy the process while I'm flying. I think digital is the way to enjoy flying. I hope more digital options will be available later and I'm pretty sure DJI will improve its current system if there is enough demand in it.

Analog has just been proven to work for a long time, digital has only been around for a year or so, digital still has problems still has its annoyances etc maybe when fatshark releases some digital goggles or transmitter and reciver stuff will change but for me analog is the way to go proven to work and proven to work well
Only just got the DJI system in the mail, so am looking very much forward to trying it. The worse latency shouldnt be a problem with my flying style, i like to take it slow. What made me buy it is the ability to see wires and scraggle, which is something my analog setup never mastered. One big downside to the DJI system that i havent heard anyone mention, is that there seems to be close to no options when wanting to get a case for the goggles and transmitter.

This might sound silly, but is there no way to adapt a mobile phone with plug in antenna and decoder that fits in USB port. Seems like the most expensive part is the hd screen. The cost of the digital goggles is what’s holding me back😕 correct me if I’m wrong

@@MrSteeleFPV exactly. Learning how to go further on analog and trouble shoot the setups is something can carry over to digital. Not sure if it is worth even mentioning the little reminder regarding that whole HAM thing and the power levels and such. Analog kinda makes you learn some of that stuff along with the concept of listening better through antennas rather than simply shoutting the signal louder through raw transmission power. Kinda ties into HAM principles as well with the idea of going farther with less or as little as possible to keep the noise floor lower.
Mr Steele you were mostly reasonable but went a little drastic on the HD dropping out immediately. DJI has a few warning signs that are there to tell you signal is going bad. I’ve had analog fall dead a couple times so neither is as polar as you made it sound. Overall, you were more reasonable than I expected but missed a bit.
I havr the aomway v1s and I compared them to my eachine ev800D and ill tell you my eachines are WAAAAY better than the aomways. Example... I can fly from inside my house sitting on my couch with the eachines and have no loss of picture little static but clear as day and no picture loss whats so ever. Now I put in the aomways and as soon as i make a left around my house I lose all picture
I get that DJI is proprietary, and that bothers me a bunch. But it just seems like it would be so much more enjoyable. And doesn’t it lock to 7ms in low latency mode? Although with reduced FPS?

People tend to weight in about the Analog using the most expensive Fatshark goggles as a reference. But a google that costs 1/3 of the Fatshark’s price will do almost the same. So it’s easier for anyone to get up in the air for cheap on analog. But if price is no obstacle, just go DJI.
Newbie here, I won’t race but just getting into fpv. Should I go digital if I have the funds? And since I’m a total noob, how is going digital here affect my choices of drones? I’ve ordered the radio, nothing else yet. If I go digital, does that mean other things are digital also? Or the transmitter and receiver of the audio is completely separate from the radio receiver transmitter?

Based on my research, I really think I prefer digital, starting out with an analog pack on the DJI goggles (which are listed as going up to 70mm IPD) do you know if adjusting the screen size internally could make them work well for me? Or do I absolutely have to go analog (the HDO2 and the Orqa do 74 and 76mm respectively) to enjoy FPV? As a noob mainly interested in close-range cine style flying, the extra latency of the DJI doesn't concern me.
Picked up an Eachine EV800DM in februari as a beginner, for about €70,-. FPV technique is changing so rapidly. I suspecting a DJI fpv 2.0 at the end of the year. I'm also curious if other companies may release something digital this year. Maybe then I'll see if I'm going to switch.
Switched to DJI digital last August and haven’t looked back. I wear glasses with my DJI goggles without issue and latency and signal penetration is great. I can fly digital where I could only dream of flying before on analog.
@GivesNoFux FPV Sorry I should have clarified. I can fly digital in and around obstructions way better on digital than on analog. No doubt analog is still the way to go for very long range beyond 4 miles.
also made the switch to digital after 4 years with analog. Agree with everything you are saying, digital is king, and you can also live stream from it if you have the smart controller. Steele say that most pro pilots use analog, BS, maybe racers, but all that does FPV filming gigs are switching to digital. I have done filming gigs and trust digital over analog anyday. Also have done streaming gig becuase of the digital picture, could never score those with analog. Steele is connected with TBS and their bread and butter is crossfire and VTX, so of course he's gonna recommend analog

I agree 100% I have a very strong Rx in my glasses. One of the reasons I stayed with my box goggles for years was I could use them with glasses. When I found out that the DJI goggles were higher video quality and worked with my glasses I figured out how to get a pair. I haven't looked back. They may not be for everyone, but they work very well for me, and the analog input allows me to fly my other craft and whoops. I fly with much more confidence now.
Same here. I've been flying analog multirotors for about 10 years. The first day I flew a DJI equipped quad, I flew lower, faster, hit smaller gaps and flew further out of LoS than I had in those previous 10 years. I also wear them over glasses without issue, and I always find there's plenty of warning when I'm approaching the limits. I've only had them "just cut out" about 3 times in a 1000 flights and that's when I was purposely pushing beyond the warnings. I go out and fly new unfamiliar places with less stress than analog, simply because if I can see small obstacles (ghost branches, wires, etc) then I can avoid them. I don't have the reflexes of Steele, but I now I don't need them. It felt like flying FPV for the first time again.
Keep in mind Steele still flies a 600TVL CCD camera with relatively poor WDR, and there are CMOS cameras that provide lower measured latency then his favorite Runcam Swift 2, so he's not really even seeing the best that analog has to offer. His attachment to live audio from the quad might be a factor too (since neither DJI nor Byte Frost offer that).
After years of flying analog, I switched to DJI last December. It was the best FPV investment I've ever made. My flying has improved significantly, because I can see the fine details of where I'm going (scraggle). And multipath penetration is incredible. My analog quads are sitting on the shelf.

The analog system will continue to be a good option for those who like tiny woops, racing, flying with many friends and risky flights. The digital system is great, but for more restricted applications, solo flying and smoother flying. I still prefer the analog system as I don't intend to keep both systems at the same time.
For cinematic flights digital is the best but for mostly everything else, analogue is perfect, while also not killing the bank account as much.

From my DJI experience:
1. DJI goggles when something is blocking the signal, you will notice "pixelated" on screen at 1st and become more and more follow the sign, it won't turn off completely itself in sudden, the signal bar is very reliable and predictable. Average FPV 5min flight time can't go that far until the screen turns off itself unless flight more than 6.5Km open air
2. Downside: no lives audio on DJI googles, but playback the air unit videos are just fine.
3. Freestyle probably won't notice any latency problem (real-world latency 2x-4x ms) this is very fine just like in online shooting game. DJI is provided Low latency mode and focus mode for the player who needs low latency.
4. many bugs are fixed from few updates including the latency and OSD on the screen
6. The DJI's radio signal is more predictable than other 3rd party radio; it won't give a spike in a sudden and cause nearly failsafe. I owned the T16 Pro+(Crossfire Full size"500mw"+Diamond Antenna). Many time I flew over trees in 200meter away just give me a spike (Drone stall about 0.2-0.3 seconds), and the latency is noticeable too it makes me feels unsafe, this is why I switched back to DJI remote for more predictable, better latency and stick feels.
7. The drone has cost a few hundred. And the flight confidence with a more unobstructed view and reliable signal bar is essential, as many analogue videos almost hit the power line, tree stick because a sudden snowflake on-screen cause nearly to crash.
8. DJI transmitter can pick up to 1200mw if you need.
9. You will see the quality of build when dissembling the DJI google and radio, not like the hundreds dollar analogue google or clone radio out there, there are how empty below the cover, and feels low quality when holding. To me, a few hundred dollars for the analogue technologies is overpriced. It's not worth to spend so much on analogue TV instead of Digital TV. Analogue will be going outdated if digital become more advance in the coming future.
10. You can use a 3rd party strap with DJI goggles as well, But I tried and it's not holding well and comfortable than the stock strap did.

I'd say if someone is looking to get into FPV right now, digital makes sense if you're going for a top tier setup. The DJI goggles give you the flexibility to run both digital and analog with an external receiver (which you'd need to buy with fatsharks anyway) and also a better DVR than the top tier Fatshark goggles.
I agree, you have that flexibility and even if digital doesn't work out, you can put an external receiver module on and run analog instead. Given the choice of a fatshark goggle, which is stuck on crappy analog, or the DJI goggle, which supports both analog and digital for a slightly higher price, it seems the obvious choice to pick the DJI goggle. Me, not having that kind of money, do not have either, but when I eventually do make the purchase will probably go for digital.

Some of your conclusion statements are incorrect.
- 720P is in fact "HD"
- You CAN fly with multiple people on HD, as long as you know how. Rotor Riot did a video with 8 pilots in the air at the same time. All on DJI's HD system. Same goes for HD and analog at the same time. You just have to do frequency management and space the pilots apart some.
- The signal does NOT just magically disappear. You get pixelation first, increased latency, and a visual cue of video bandwidth, before the signal drops completely.
Don't stand in the way of progress. You don't fly FM or PCM radios, do you? No... you fly DIGITAL radios. There were growing pains with that as well, back in the early 2000's. Digital video is the future, but here today!
Lets say we have radio issues for an very brief moment (200-500ms?)
- Sparks and shit then gives me a "ouuuuuh-moment", but all flying is fine. (analog).
- The latency/packetloss issue that would occur in this moment displaces my whole handling of the quad and probably gives a 500-1000ms time to resync the brain after the issues have ended. (digital).
The dji googles and digital are so much better if you fly open trees or open proximity in close range (playground), open field or clear view long range. Remember once you go digital you will never be able to go back I think. Very good to begin with when you fly more open and un-tight where you can abort all the time. But once you get good at flying, it's hard to do stuff you can do with analog in a confident way unless you keep the flying open and "slower"/safer.
Orqa/HDO2 with tbs vtx for medium range proximity or stuff between you and the receiver gives confidence where digital cannot deliver.
@@peterpunch1 Interesting. Recently I watched a video and the people in the comments said the exact opposite. It seems to me that digital is not yet ready for competition flying and possibly long range, but for most other things it seems fantastic.
The main point I took from those comments is that the HUGELY increased visual quality will make flying easier for newbies, they will be more confident in trying new things and therefore they will learn faster. Which is a very important factor.
Oh, and one more thing. DJI visual quality can be so good, that it gives you a better flying experience, closer to something like a computer game. Fuzzy analog signal on small screens gives me the feel of some Russian cold war era military tech designed for operating in extreme conditions rather than tech for consumer enjoyment. GoPro flying footage is usually amazing, but seeing the analog feed has no immersion.
When I finally looked at some reviews of the DJI FPV system (a year after release), I was shocked at the incredible visual quality increase compared to analog systems. It looks like you are there in the air :-)

DJI goggles take optical lens :) And video link doesn't break instantly: often quicker than analog, right, but beside the info in the OSD (including a red icon), the sides of the image get more blurry, quality will decrease and ultimately the framerate will drop, before it goes black.
I've got both, I keep flying analog, especially for tinies and toothpicks, I understand all the arguments for analog (still got 2 analog 5"), but when I have the choice (most of the time), I go for DJI for a simple reason : it is such a pleasure to have a beautiful video feedback without any glitch.
I needed 20 packs to get used to, then I started to enjoy them more and more. Never had to complain about latency either, but I'm just an average pilot. While DJI behaves pretty badly in the forest, in a "metalic environement" it gives great results. The lack of live audio and of an HDMI Output (shamely reserved to the Smart Controller) is a pain in the ass. But quality got me I guess ;)
DJI break up is so much more manageable than Analog. Really wonder as to how much Steele has flown it recently as there has been a lot of changes. The 1200mw hack sends me much further than analog ever could. I also never notice the latency but I used to fly a Caddx Ratel which also had latency so maybe I was already used to it.
This is because Digital likes reflections it just makes more data for the system to put back together and also why all DJI reviews are all in reflective bando type environments. I tried it once in the woods and was shocked as to how shit it is and also at the box goggle feel and over compressed image i work in TV and it isn't even a good 720 image let alone HD as people like to call. Fly Orqa with Foxeer toothless cams and it's awesome I had to change all my cams as the micro eagle weren't up to par with these goggles
Exactly.... the biggest reason I switched to digital (dji system) is because IT WORKS 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME! Analog fpv is not for someone who: doesnt like fixing shit that doesn't work properly half the time or doesnt have endless funds to constantly repurchase the same parts over and over. I agree with much of Steele's comments here. DJI is absolutely trying to corner the market. No doubt. However, at the end of the day I ran out of patience and funds routinely flying analog.
gboulter I haven’t tried the woods yet but that’s a good point. DJI likes reflections, makes perfect sense. I was actually a step away from buying the Orqa’s and then these came out of nowhere. Feel really bad for companies like Orqa and Fatshark.
I deff agree that the picture is more like a clean 480p than 720p but the quality is much better in 4:3 than 16:9. On top of that the 60fps live feed also brings that quality out. Overall though flying without a flicker is a dream world. DJI has done what was almost deemed impossible in the FPV community. I wish Fatshark or someone else could’ve stepped up and realize they don’t have the R&D funds but this visual upgrade has been needed. Analog is old hardware and we need that new new.

Steele you should realy update your DJI FPV gear and thest it a few days again... it has changed a lot since the end of 2019 and its realy consistent in latency now and the coverage of the fpv feed is sooooooo much better than analog. dont get me wrong, i still fly analog and enjoy it because its so simple and versatile but when i put on my digital googles again i still cant belive what im seening sometimes :)

Great review, thank you Mr Steele. Personally I've switched from Fatshark to DJI and its made my analogue equipment redundant on all but my tiny whoop drone. Picture quality was always a disappointment to me with analogue, digital is like switching your TV from a 1970's set to a 2015 set. The experience of flying is soooo much better for me. I do get that the top pilots still fly analogue due to latency but for me I won't be competing on the world stage and the DJI system is perfectly suitable my capabilit (and probably 99% of pilots). I believe even the top guys will race just as competitively if they're all using digital. You could compare switching your petrol car to a Tesla. Old school will always find issue with the new technology but over time everyone will make the switch. If you're new to the hobby I'd recommend digital from day one, you'll never need to make that switch and the pain of having some fairly expensive investment being made redundant.

Well tbh that whole video is pretty much saying nothing. The 20 mins of talking could have easily been 5-10 mins
This latency thing is a bit embarrassing for him, he flies at 30fps lol. One sec/30 is a base latency of 33ms. And you have to add the latency of the camera to it. Dji at 120fps has always a latency of less than 30ms, lens to display.
@@dav77h Walking down a stair while someone is turning the lights on and off is just fine and you will continue walking. Walk down a stair and your vision is either very briefly stopped/titled or not in sync with what you feel and expect and you will either fall or intuitively stop to stabilize.
I flew updated DJI the other week and its so much better than analog in every way except for the way extreme but very brief signal quality issues are handled. This is unfortunally a gamebreaker if you fly where these things happen, very much the spots were Steele flies.
At these brief moments:
Analog = "frames" are of very poor quality but the timing is constant and therefore image quality comes back in a way the brain expects to and your sense of soaring through the spot is not interfered.
Digital = Frames timing gets altered and I believe that for all/most humans the possibility for the brain to predict how the quad continues moving and make stick corrections while being mostly blind is instantly removed. It also removes the possibility to just continue at the very instant image is good again as if no image disruption had occured.
The visual input to the brain works in streams and the brain does marvels filling in the gaps, but it requires so little to make it tilt. You can get this tilt under certain conditions on rapidfire mode 1 as well when it has trouble mixing the sources.
Digital is the future and I love it but I cannot fly it confident with the "I am one with the quad feeling" when you do tight flying with lots of hard targets. I would hold back, fly less aggressive/flat or go fly more open because I could not manage the crashes 😂
@@dav77h ive not gotten into FPV drones yet but i play some competitive video games and for me under 60 fps is unplayable, and FPV is more fast paced so i have no clue how a professional FPV pilot could honestly say 30fps is fine, i dont think i could use analog because 144hz monitor spoiled me and if im playing a game where i get 90 on average then jump to 110 its night and day, im happy that DJI has 120 fps tho, ill definitely go digital for my first drone
OK... If you fly like Mr Steele, and needs a gazzillionth of a second in latency, so for god sake buy analog. I have analog, and the DJI system, but i cant seem to notice any lag/breakups at all. Of course, im an old man and doesn`t have the reflexes i use to have, but i think most of you will find the latency on digital more then good enough. After i started using digital, my analog setup is resting peacefully on my wall. ;)
I find it's all about the range when flying. Brake up vs latency, Take your pick. Both have their good points. One thing for sure. Either system is yet perfect, and there is plenty room for improvement in both realms.
6 months ago I have started to FPV, directly with DJI, and all my friends laughing that analog is the best, yesterday, I have finished my analog building. Really it was disappointing, with Fatshark, tbs Crossfire, and diamond Antenna ,how I spent my money in Analog. Then I switched to my DJI, it's really game changer. I am happy with DJI, and I respect other decisions.
Digital has its place and is great for crisp clear images but analogue is still the best for many applications

Analogue before I had digital: Yeah this looks blurry but I can cope its ok. Breakup feels dodgy and disturbing with static and flickering.
Got digital: This looks so nice and sharp and latency is a non issue. Breakup is nicer and it just goes a little blocky.
Analogue after digital: I can't do this it's like sand in my eyes. Agh horrible flickering. No just no.
Literally my first set just looking in was digi. Tried analog and it wasn't not doable, just not as enjoyable. I blame it on the sim. Digi looks more like a sim. But I certainly wouldn't break the bank for it. My issue is 💯 as he explains. 500 for goggles r 650 for everything
Lol looks like a sim? What does that even mean? Steele makes some casual observations about digital but then he flies analogue exclusively. It certainly does not just cut off to black without warning unless you block the signal with impenetrable obstructions in non line of sight situations, have a known bad firmware revision or go beyond 6.5KM which considering it advertises 4KM max range is acceptable. Assuming line of sight at less than 6.5KM you get a reducing of bitrate then beyond 6.5KM it will disconnect. If money is your concern then just get a cheapo Eachine EV800D headset with cheapo Eachine VTX and stick to analogue. High end analogue is definitely more expensive though look at the cost of Orca goggles at $649 where as the DJI googles are at $409 see getfpv website. You can get a Caddx Vista for 100 bucks now which is only 10 bucks more than a Foxeer Predator 4 + TBS Unify + TBS Triumph plus the Vista does 1200mW which is 400mW more than the Unify's 800mW. The majority of people will never fly beyond 4KM let alone 6.5KM. So many times in the past I tried to get friends into FPV then they lost interest the moment they saw how low grade the analogue quality is. Since getting digital I have managed to get two friends to take interest and they both commented on how juicy the quality looks and how appealing it is.

Steele, analog is yesterday newspaper, I started analog 2 years ago and I have been flying DJI hd since 6 months ago, and i will never go back ( at least for my 5' quads) I did the analog conversion to fly my 3' or whatever but honestly, everytime I fly analog I feel like "eww this is CRAP', and i do have Rapid fire and tbs 800mw which is kinda of the best in analog world.., long story short, for me, with all due respect with my fellow pilots, analog sucks now

I am just getting in this hobby but I haven't flown yet, just putting the necessary parts together searching and learning things about FPV, so I have no experience with both of the systems. But as far as I watched and searched and learned, I can say from an objective perspective that, for anyone who wants to fly an FPV Quad to freestyle and/or race, an analog setup which is picked precisely and smartly is the best setup to have. The digital needs more time to be improved and beat the analog and dominate the FPV sector, that is how the technology works, right? One day the digital will be at a level that it has a high definition video quality with a reaaaaalyyyy low latency and more features than analog has.

You're right Steele, as soon as camera movement gets too fast with DJI, the images gets shitty. But If you're a beginner and wanna buy goggles, HD is 100% the way to go!
Great Info here Mr. Steele. I just ordered the DJI system a few days ago. I am that guy that just wants to go fly by himself. I like cinematic stuff. I mostly fly drones/whoops that can record HD, I can’t look at that analog recording anymore 🤷🏻♂️. I have been flying for a few years and never got into cross fire, so range was 💩. So upgrading to DJI gives me plug & play longer range and better video for precise flying.

Slick Six I've got an Apex with the ImpulseRC OSD and power regulator and it changes absolutely everything. If you wire it up as they instruct the feed is pristine with amazing sound quality. I'm flying KISS now but I had it working with a BF FC at first too
I have the vtx and the camera soldered on the same ground, tried to find the best channels for the antennas I have and the feed is pretty much noiseless. Obviously its not near digital or with that much resolution and definition but it's clear

this one i agree with steele, it depends on what type of flying you are into. If you explore more places, then analog might be more reliable. but then i also love the quality of dji video esp if it works, and the constant feedback via updates in their firmware. but then again, im a poor bloke, so i stick with my skyzone and just focus on my flying. i remember a video with vanouver, getting issues with latency
You made great points. I switched to DJI last August and haven't looked back. But I fly solo and don't race and only have two quads: 5" Apex with vista and a 3" 2S toothpick which is analog, but when the nebula comes out I'll just build a heavy 3" or light 4" and be 100% digital.
personally i have no issue knowing when my signal is getting low on dji. i think some people just are stuck with the idea that its the same as it was 6 months ago. its really easy to see my bitrate and know the magic number for me, which is right around 10mb, once it gets to that i know that if i turn around it will drop to around 7 and thats the minimal i ever wanna see because then it will start stuttering. in order to have usable analog imo you NEED rapidfire and a unify or rush etc. becasue cheap analog is so bad i wouldnt recommend it to even the newest pilots. and if im gonna spend 700 on a video setup and i dont race i dont see any reason not to buy dji.

I have both and I love both. I think DJI isn´t expensive take fatshark HDO2 and a good Cam and VTX and you´r near to the price of DJI. But that´s true you can start in the beginning with a very cheap analog setup and have fun !!!
I wouldn't think I'll be able to correct Mr Steele in FPV related stuff ever... But it happened now!
Digital FPV system from DJI does NOT loose signal without prior warnings in form of degraded image quality (very easily visible to the pilot)!!! Especially focus mode is pretty good in this (actually better than analog), because it deteriorates the sides of the video feed sooner keeping the center clear (without digital artifacts/blocks) as long as possible. You can very precisely tell when the signal is dangerously weak and turn back your drone safely.
Even in the standard mode you can see digital artifacts/pixelation/blocks in the video feed long before you loose the signal completely.
I understand that top freestyle pilots like Mr Steele and FPV racing community cannot switch to digital just yet, but they should realize they have a limited capability of looking at the matter from beginner's or a hobby pilot stand point.
Finally Mr. Steele should better test a new system before saying something so untrue as he did in this video about the digital FPV system from DJI.
i wouldnt call it a "latency issue" aswell it sounds way worse then it is its from 10-15ms on analog to 25-30ms on digital yes its worse but for 50x the better picture? start talking about numbers and not just say: "the latency is bad so its bad" makes me mad
agree, when it first came out he diss it before trying it.
Flew 3 packs on a friend's DJI setup. One of those 3 packs had the image lock up/freeze just as I was taking off. Just completely locked up as if I hadnt been moving. Problem is I was armed and I could not hear the quad flying because DJI has no onboard audio. I was beginning to move/fly when I finally heard the quad/props and I disarmed.
My friend is one of those guys that keeps firmwares up to date so this wasnt some freshly bought old firmware from last year.
I will admit that the HD was pretty to fly and I tested the HELL out of that DJI build putting it into spots that I have flown analog behind objects and even down into a drainage sump that was below ground and out of visual/signal LOS to see how break up was.
But it is simply not ready in my book in that I dont trust it entirely. I would rather have analog which shows me problems much sooner than the way the DJI setup does.

Based on your testing, did the image pixelate before you start feeling latency going bad to the point the drone is hard to bring back?
Did you fly in focus mode (center of the image clear, sides much more susceptible to pixelation)?
Did you use the DJI's controller or something else (of a known quality)?
And yes, no audio is one of the downsides of the DJI system.

Interesting topic at a time i'm looking to upgrade goggles, DJI still probably not for me yet. I wonder if dji would prevent you(sometime in the future) from flying near no fly zones like they do with the mavic etc. Thoughts?

As i state in my own videos, digital makes more sense; It gives you ALOT more confidence when flying. When i went from analogue to digital, it freed up that part of my brain that kept worrying about all the stuff i couldnt really see; ghost branches, leafs, weird gaps, etc - and at the same time it made me WANT to go out and fly more - both because of the clearer image, but also because of every flight being an "aaaaah that was fun" moment, rather than a "jesus christ.. i hope ill learn this some day".

I am really new to the hobby and decided to jump straight in with Digital after 20+ hours on the Sim. I love how easy the setup is & I don't notice any latency (Maybe because I am so new to this). The only thing I wish DJI had was audio, I miss hearing the motors. Great video Steele, loving these updated How to's!
Steele, did your hand burn when you grabbed the DJI goggles? Put some TrueRC antennas on them, update the firmware, set the power to 1200mw and enjoy the digital world!!! And it’s only going to get better!!!! ✌️
2022. Horses for courses, as a beginner fpv(33 odd years in rc, fixed wing and heli), i found the Dji digital system adequate for my needs. You top performers where 5-10ms is a long time, would most def use top end analog. With that said, even the Dji air units are cheap, compared to the rx guiding systems(flybarless units in helis) we use in our giant scale craft. So glad i stepped into the fpv world, 3d flying with LOS is fun, 3d with fpv is just next level.
Have the two options 😁😁 i have the FatShark HDO2 and recently got the DJI
im getting back into the FPV game and after many weeks of deliberation, numerous conversations and a lot of back and forth... I went analog. thought it made the most sense for feasibility back into the world. can't say one is better than the other, it all depends what your trying to accomplish. once you answer that question, you'll have n problem making an educated decision.
If u bought high end stuff try to return it if u bought some cheap stuff analog is fine for the price high end analog is a nogo

For me, analog sets no limits on what kind of craft I can fly. I've also smashed my share of components so I can appreciate cost/flying time with analog. Also, every quad needs air unit and it's going to be a limiting factor on the size of fleet. So, I plan to build a good quality analog 'ecosystem' that works, is affordable, supports ~everything and when that is all set up, will add another tech tree (digital) to my gear setup. It's not either/or but in what order. Also, going all digital now would mean having a lot of money invested in 1st gen stuff. It'll be +gen 1 when I'm done with analog. And possibly be buying this gen1 stuff second hand, very very cheaply ;)
I got DomV2's when they hit, HDO's same. I waited for this FOREVER! I have both systems and have an analog to Dji part coming as well as a Dji pro controller with HDMI out, so I have the best of all worlds!
I went into this hobby with Fatshark's Attitude v6 + TBS fusion + Immersion RC SpiroNet v2 antenna bundle + Ethics earbuds. Costs more than DJI's fpv goggles but cheaper in the long run. Id feel more comfortable pushing my limits (repairing, modifying, flying, building) multiple $200 analog quads than doing the same on a $400 digital quad as a beginner.
I think that this is the perfect time to pick up the DJI HD system as it is discounted now.

Honestly it is tempting. BUT I am personnally waiting for the DJI digital system V2. Wait another 6 months and the units will be smaller, less latency. Or even better orqa or Skyzone will come out with their version. I would actually say this is NOT a good time to buy one. Just like this not the good time to buy a PS4. Sure, they are cheap, but they just want to get rid of stock...ofc if you are impatient, jump on it. I can wait still

Not sure if everyone dunking DJI knows this, but DJI fixed the analog latency issue like 6 months ago... you get ~20ms latency instead 0f 40-50ms when it was first released.
Only real advantage of purely analog goggles is the size and form factor.
It was very interesting to watch you stepping over your own mishap with DJI and appreciate their work in developing this setup (I am too amazed by their efforts). Would you be able to convince MrSteele from five years ago to not go digital? Tesla Model 3 vs Lotus Elise parallel would fit better LOL I stay analogue - I love to see under the hood ;)

Analogue is the way I go - for most of my flights including long range.
Short range with a particular shoot in mind, I’d probably (ok most definitely) bring the DJI 6S Cinewhoop quads.
Signal breakup is horrendously delayed and “blocky” with digital in some situations. But that said analogue is fuzzy but you can still see some of the image when the situation gets a little sketchy.

Small remark about DJI. In most of cases DJI FPV Glass do not simple lost picture. At the beginning quality of picture is decreased (it's like jump from 1024x768 to 640x480) also there is an icon with signal level. You may notice there signal level. If signal going to worse the Signal Level icon change color to red. It should be enough to turn back, More over there are situations when digital system works much better than analogue. Fore example if you fly in environment with a lot of metal. If do not think about differences digital and analogue take a look the glass quality. From my point of view, analogue top quality items are too expensive.
Mr. Steele, you are a great pilot who i have gained many hours of enjoyment from watching your skilled flying. You sir are a stud! I am a pilot who enjoys flying and I imagine my flights like yours when i am flying. It is so much fun! A fantasy to be equal but fun none the less.
The debate on analog and digital seems like a debate on vinyl and digital. If you have a great music system vinyl is superior in my opinion. Digital is way easier and convenient and if you have the great system it too works well to please the ears. I am an old guy tho, an audio file and a possessor of lots of music.

720p is HD. It's the lowest HD, but none the less HD.

Headboxes are an interesting option and possible solution for people with weird IPD or eyesight/glasses issues. Also super huge field of view... I went from fixed with a monitor to a FXT headbox to Fatshark HD2s. My flying ability increased with each change, monitor to a 16:9 headbox and things got better. Then went to 4:3 HD2s and got even better

I've been flying for 5 years and have 40ish quads I've built myself. (All which were analogue, now 10 are digital). Digital was the best investment I ever made and I've tried EVERYTHING! A newbie would be stupid to invest a cent in analogue. Your giving false and misleading information about these products to protect your own financial interests which is unfair and dishonest especially when new people see these videos and don't see through the bias and greed in your super opinionated statements.
Awesome video...but not forgetting. Digital video fpv has been used in the military for the last 15 years. All we,re getting is old military tech..which is still cool nonetheless.
Didn't talk about weight considerations. DJI Air Unit and even the Vista setup is still significantly heavier than analog--the weight difference is especially important on a small/micro build.
DJI has a purpose. I fly my HD2's for fun and freestyle, my DJI for 'cinematic' and multipath environments. Both have pluses and negatives..such is life 😄

This is the point. For FPV flying with high risk of crashing, track racing and tiny, the analog system is best.
For exploratory, cinematic, smooth freestyle flight, the digital system is best.
I prefer flights where the analog is more suitable.
Latency, the weight and size of the equipment, how the digital components fit into the existing analog ecosystem, affordability,. Yup, there are a lot of questions and early difficulties with digital FPV but all of them will be completely taken care of and understood in the coming years, and a lot faster than we could even guess right now. So it has always been with new advances and new technologies. When I was a kid, people used to say that you can't stop progress. We don't say that anymore, but it's still true. One thing is for sure; the FPV world will become digital, and my sense is that will happen in the short run, not the long run. Folks, people felt the same way when monoplanes started to become popular over biplanes, and when jets started to become the power plant of choice in aircraft. How about electric cars? Gasoline is dead as a fuel. It's only a matter of time for it to be the latest dinosaur. The same will be true of analog FPV before we know it. My advice to anyone at this point (at least those who could afford a top tier goggle setup right away) would be to get the DJI system, as well as a good analog receiver and the adapter to use it with the DJI goggles. And you won't have to cut on anything and void your warranty; there is a really good unit available which doesn't affect the DJI physical setup at all. You just hang your analog receiver on your head strap and feed the output to the Analog In port on the DJI goggles. It works like a champ and is very inexpensive (after the cost of the receiver). Be prepared to roll with the punch here, folks and get ready for the inevitable, because an FPV ecosystem, whether for racing or freestyle, in the future will be digital...count on it.

If you watch Joshua Badwell video, DJI signal will not go out black. It will just get pixelated or blurry. BTW, I just ordered FPV DJI combo.

I hope GoPro comes with a camera that can be used for fpv which can transmit hd footage right of the Box..I use a hero 7 as fpv cam with a converter which is same as analog video but with wide fov.

Steele you can buy glasses from RHO-Lens in the range from -15 to +15 with cylinder from -6 to +6. So thats not a problem. I fly DJI and Orqa and for smooth flying DJi is perfect but for race I like the analog more.
TBH When I flew the DJI digital I was blown away by the image when the quad was on the ground and I first plugged in, but once I started flying around I really didn't notice that much as I was only focused on hitting my lines and gaps. Also with analog I have a little screen I can pass off to the kid at the park that walks up to me with an interest. As you stated, I am still not quite on board with a proprietary system. Not to mention the DIJ didn't fit very well.

DJI fpv is not for everyone, but it’s handy for situations where the analogue system isn’t enough to penetrate certain structures.
That said - most of us carry a GoPro anyways 😂
Excellent point on the sharing the FPV feed. There are so many ways to share FPV on analog and to be able to do it for super cheap.
The proprietary tech in DJI is obviously pretty damn good performance wise. But it also locks you into only approved retailers that are allowed to share the space like CADDX and the minimum advertised pricing is clearly keeping the air units to a specific price point.
I love having pinky finger nail sized 200-400mw analog vtxs. I like having decent audio on board my drone to hear when I am flying and I might be 1.5 miles out on an Xclass rig while doing 80mph in a tail wind while only 4-5 feet off the ground.
Analog for me for quite awhile. Not to mention it is a simple tech which is survivable into the distant future.
We have the salad days of cheap FPV but with a couple shitty regs we could all be going back to the dark days of FPV where we were hacking wireless analog components to mount before any companies formed to do it for us.
@@ARI3S oh don't get me wrong. It's a great system! Just not quite there for me yet. Smaller, duel screen OLED goggles and a way to share my feed and I'm in. Just didn't like the giant box goggles and closed system.

Right now DJI's digital system is the only way to go for a person not already invested in an analog system. In saying that, I think the best overall setup right now is using DJI for fpv feed, and crossfire for radiolink, using your choice of radio.

I have to disagree with you in regards DJI googles form factor. My DJI googles fit like gloves, even with my glasses on. I can't do that with FATSHARKs
I bought both DJI FPV and HDO2s w Rapidfire and TBS Unify Pro. Both are great systems. But I have to say I really enjoy the DJI FPV system more, much more. I bought the IFlight Titan DC5 BNF. It was awesome to setup the system and fly in an hour or two. The DC5 is a fantastic machine w the F7. Locked in. The ability to get into flying really quite quickly and have an incredible machine w outstanding performance is the experience I've been waiting for. The analog system are not nearly as easy to get in the air as was the DJI IFlight BNF experience. So many great things to say about the DJI experience having been down both roads, analog and digital. If I were starting - DJI FPV IFlight BNF experience all the way.
How much is poorer latency going to impact a non pro level flyer?

I want to do head tracking for my airplanes. I think digital may be the way to go just to have nicer flight experience. I want to look at something nice. Can you extend the range and dabble in lower frequencies witht eh DJI gear?

I respect your accomplishments. I respect your experience and I have followed much of your advice as pertains to starting out in the FPV world.
However, coming from the DJI camera drone world, wherein I have become boooored, I would only venture into the FPV because of the DJI system. Many of us looked at FPV over the years, and while very much interested in the performance of the FPV drones, we could not tolerate the analog display.
Many of us just want to fly, and spend less time figuring it all out - what goes with what. Plug and play with a great display is all we want.
Please do a follow up to this video one year from the date of this release.

I'm still learning about FPV and I hope to buy my first FPV drone soon. I'd like to do free fly or freestyle and filming cars. I probably watched 20+ videos already and read multiple articles and I'm still not sure what to buy. But every time I see analog footage I can't figure out how they even know where they are flying. I'd like to enjoy the process while I'm flying. I think digital is the way to enjoy flying. I hope more digital options will be available later and I'm pretty sure DJI will improve its current system if there is enough demand in it.
Also was pretty jealous when he scrolled down getfpv store and DJI goggles were only $409! Currently it's back to $529. I need that low price right now lol! :D

Analog has just been proven to work for a long time, digital has only been around for a year or so, digital still has problems still has its annoyances etc maybe when fatshark releases some digital goggles or transmitter and reciver stuff will change but for me analog is the way to go proven to work and proven to work well
Only just got the DJI system in the mail, so am looking very much forward to trying it. The worse latency shouldnt be a problem with my flying style, i like to take it slow. What made me buy it is the ability to see wires and scraggle, which is something my analog setup never mastered. One big downside to the DJI system that i havent heard anyone mention, is that there seems to be close to no options when wanting to get a case for the goggles and transmitter.

It wont just BLACK out.. The DJI picture degrades.. Mr Steele is WRONG on this point. DJI is the future, that's all there is to it. The ONLY reason you need analog is if your a high end fpv racer..

This might sound silly, but is there no way to adapt a mobile phone with plug in antenna and decoder that fits in USB port. Seems like the most expensive part is the hd screen. The cost of the digital goggles is what’s holding me back😕 correct me if I’m wrong

Not sure if it is worth even mentioning the little reminder regarding that whole HAM thing and the power levels and such.
Analog kinda makes you learn some of that stuff along with the concept of listening better through antennas rather than simply shoutting the signal louder through raw transmission power. Kinda ties into HAM principles as well with the idea of going farther with less or as little as possible to keep the noise floor lower.
DividingByZero FPV learn to drove stick so you are a better automatic driver? Some don’t want to race and/or will never own a stick shift car.
Mr Steele you were mostly reasonable but went a little drastic on the HD dropping out immediately. DJI has a few warning signs that are there to tell you signal is going bad. I’ve had analog fall dead a couple times so neither is as polar as you made it sound. Overall, you were more reasonable than I expected but missed a bit.

one disadvantage from the DJI setup is that its quite heavy (air unit). some nice toothpick style quads don't even weight that much.
This digital vs analog debate reminds me a lot of the VR vs triple screens debate in sim racing :D
I havr the aomway v1s and I compared them to my eachine ev800D and ill tell you my eachines are WAAAAY better than the aomways. Example... I can fly from inside my house sitting on my couch with the eachines and have no loss of picture little static but clear as day and no picture loss whats so ever. Now I put in the aomways and as soon as i make a left around my house I lose all picture
I get that DJI is proprietary, and that bothers me a bunch.

People tend to weight in about the Analog using the most expensive Fatshark goggles as a reference. But a google that costs 1/3 of the Fatshark’s price will do almost the same. So it’s easier for anyone to get up in the air for cheap on analog. But if price is no obstacle, just go DJI.

And since I’m a total noob, how is going digital here affect my choices of drones? I’ve ordered the radio, nothing else yet. If I go digital, does that mean other things are digital also? Or the transmitter and receiver of the audio is completely separate from the radio receiver transmitter?

Quick question to you or anyone who can help... I have an IPD of 75mm... Based on my research, I really think I prefer digital, starting out with an analog pack on the DJI goggles (which are listed as going up to 70mm IPD) do you know if adjusting the screen size internally could make them work well for me? Or do I absolutely have to go analog (the HDO2 and the Orqa do 74 and 76mm respectively) to enjoy FPV? As a noob mainly interested in close-range cine style flying, the extra latency of the DJI doesn't concern me.
Picked up an Eachine EV800DM in februari as a beginner, for about €70,-. FPV technique is changing so rapidly. I suspecting a DJI fpv 2.0 at the end of the year. I'm also curious if other companies may release something digital this year. Maybe then I'll see if I'm going to switch.
