      Thanks so much for your kind words- pastels are a passion and I love sharing whatever knowledge I've gained over the years. I really learned out of books and by trial and error so it's nice to help others avoid some of the mistakes and headaches I had!

    I'm beginning to think pastels might be the way for me. I hadn't seen this painting before today and like it a lot. Hopefully I'll be able to get a closer look at how you do what you do when I move down...which is only a few days now.

    Rushing water is best painted with layering to mix the colours rather than blending because the strokes add to a sense of movement. But the best way to find what works for you is to try out different methods and styles. So try both methods and see what you think.

    Hi Lindy. Just wondering -- what is the difference between MiTeintes Tex and MiTeintes Touch paper? I have MiTeintes Touch and I am not happy with it at all, you can't get many layers on it. I am more used to Uart 400. Loved this demo as I'm struggling with rocks in a stream now. They look like russet potatoes floating in water. Ooops, I meant to put this comment on the video where you are painting rocks in a stream using MiTeintes Tex paper. Somehow I got it on the wrong video. Sorry about that.

      Hi Renee,
      To be honest I'm not sure what the difference is! I think that TX has a coarser grit but it could just be a different name for the same thing. I use TEX which has a lot of grit and can take a lot of layers. My other fave is Colourfix Original which has great grit and lots of really good colour choices. It's an Australian paper by Art Spectrum but you can get it in the US as well. i know what you mean about potatoe rocks mine were very marshmallowing when I started out!!

      @@LindyWhittonStudio Thanks for the information, Lindy. I like a sanded paper but not so sanded that it tears through my pastels. I just got a full set of Jackson pastels that are very inexpensive (2.29 each) and I love their creamy texture. A lot of artists said they were very similar to Unison and Unison is SO expensive I thought I'd try the Jackson brand. So far, I really like them except for ONE major thing - the wrappers are VERY gluey-sticky and were MURDER to get off the pastels. Many pastels were left with a sticky residue which was really hard to get off and many of them broke in the process. I sent Jackson art supply photos and I hope they will replace the glued-up pastels and many shattered also. I took photos of each one with the color number, took me HOURS to do that. I will try the Colourfix. I have Art Spectrum pastels too, the extra soft ones and like those. I also tried Mount Vision but they are a bit too gritty for my liking. I got them because they are toxin free and they are very large in size, you can break into 3 pieces, but I won't buy them again. Yeah - potato rocks -- NOT a good thing. I have a mind block about rocks I think. I can do large rocks okay but the small ones trip me up. lol Literally -- I trip over them. Get it? Sorry, I have a zaney sense of humor.

      I had no luck with Touch. I couldn't get pastel to stick.
      Or layer. I like Hahnemuller
      it has a nice texture and blending is easy, but won't take too many layers. Uart 600 is nice too but only comes on black. I want to try Tex

      @@gkfrandsen7739 My favorite is Uart 400. You can get lots of texture and blending is easy too. I do not like 600 or 500 as, again, not enough layering capability. I like to tone the Uart 400 in the colors of my choice as that is easy to do with watercolor, a thin layer of acrylic paint, or just using hard pastel and rubbing alcohol.

      I used soft pastels for all areas of the painting. Of course there are varying degrees of softness. I sometimes go back in with a conte hard stick to make sharp edges.

    Thanks Lindy, another great informative video, I am learning a lot from them. 😁. A question ~ the flowing part of the river, can I blend the colours and then add some texture on top as you did in the sky? or wouldn't that work.

    • @LindyWhittonStudio
      @LindyWhittonStudio  8 років тому +1

      Rhonda Willington Rushing water is best painted in layers which helps to increase the sense of movement. Blending will make it look still. The best way is to try out different methods and see what works.

      It's a Mi Tientes textured paper - like gritty sandpaper. There are lot's of similar brands - another favourite of mine is Art Spectrum Colourfix Original sanded paper. they come in lots of colour choices.
