@Black Sheep Many teachers will flat out not teach evolution. Need any more evidence just google "Alabama politician religion in school" and be amazed. This is what our great leaders and people in power waste their time and tax dollars on.
@@davi.alexandre the problem isn't the teachers, it is the students, my student's parents give me the finger in the parking lot because they want their kids to be working/ not in school, the US has become "loser-ville".
But that "scaring away rivals" part is also sexual selection, called intrasexual selection. Darwin also wrote about it. So, if there are crabs in which large clawed males chase away their rivals better, they are also favored by sexual selection. It's not only about mate choice (called intersexual selection).
You could make an argument that human evolution did the same (but mostly towards the female side). Everyone knows that big boobs are considered sexy among humans. Why though? It's entirely possible that some of our ancestors' males selected their mates based on how much milk they produced - which they could guess based on the size of their teats. But as things progressed, "filler" mass became a thing while attraction stayed the same, so they bred for bigger and bigger - and here we are today with boob fixated males and females with back problems.
The opposite could be true too. In other mammals, breasts only grow big during pregnancy. Mating with a pregnant female is a waste of energy for the male and thus is normally considered unattractive. A female which has large breasts all the time can effectively fake pregnancy. It makes it easier to cheat and make your beta male husband care for the babies of your alpha male lover. The reversal of male repulsion by large breasts becomes a useful trait for the alpha male.
Except that attraction to breasts is cultural, not innate. There are many cultures where breasts are not a big deal, but *legs* and especially thighs are highly sexualized.
Its simple, genes ALSO fight for selection, so through the process of selection, popular genes try to make sure they get selected over other genes. The genes that cause attraction to large claws probably live in genetically similar genetic specimens that (if male) grow large claws.
I guess they had big claws because the females saw the guys with the biggest claws were the best protectors and so they only mated with the ones with big claws, the other males then mutated to grow big claws no matter what by the means of natural selection.
A lot of modern design and invention is based on nature. Whale shaped hulls on ships, Fibonacci spirals used in the construction of buildings etc and shark skin technology to increase speed in swimming are a few examples.
so are sexual preferences like the claws memetic or genetic? or a mix of both? because you say in the video it's genetic, but I've seen (I forgot where) a study done on flies where, after seeing another fly mate with specific colored flies, they'll mate more with that colored flies and not with the other colored flies, which to me seems like a meme thing not a gene thing
Different species are more or less effected by cultural learning so it would depend on many different factors. As the papers in the video description show, there do seem to be mutations strongly correlated with certain sex drives, but these are just correlations. We find the same thing with food preferences in animals. It's a complex mixture of many factors and is not well understood, but genetic inheritance seems to be the cause in certain cases.
Happy Darwin Day Everyone! I'm going to Richard Dawkin's Talk today in London^^ Little Update: (and I'm sorry to say this John, I see you liked my comment). But the talk was not worth it at all... Richard Dawkins is a remarkable man and he has published some interesting books, some more than others. However, I am not sure if all of his talks are like this or not but it was basically about an hour and a half of making fun of faith and a little bit of "since is great", "humans are great". At the end there were some questions. Pretty much none were relevant to be honest. I am really disappointed. However, it seems that many people were, in fact, having a good time. But for what I saw, the audience was MAJORITARILY (so not referring to everone) composed of posh english people with nothing to do on a tuesday night with the desire of "appearing cultured" as they go to a talk after a few drinks at the bar.
Not only have I read it several times, parts of it are literally quoted in this very video, a picture of the book is on screen, and it is discussed at length.

Thermodynamics of evolution and Darwinism According to thermodynamic theory, evolution is a spontaneous process that develops within living systems in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics. However, this process takes place against the background of non-spontaneous changes in the same systems - processes that are initiated by the environment. These non-spontaneous processes cannot be predicted by thermodynamics. Thus, Darwinism, the physical foundation of which is hierarchical thermodynamics, only partially determines the direction of the evolution of living beings. Evolution tends to develop according to the second law of thermodynamics, when the environment has relatively little effect on this evolutionary development. In the event of abrupt changes in the environment, evolutionary changes are unpredictable. Thermodynamics sets the trend of evolutionary changes only at certain stages of evolution. In this regard, in general, the theory of Darwinism, as a theory that establishes the direction of evolution, has limited application. This explanation does not require the use of the concept of artificial intelligence. Gladyshev G.P. J Thermodyn Catal, 2017, 8: 2 DOI: 10,4172 / 2157-7544.100018, Life - A Complex Spontaneous Process Takes Place against the Background of Non-Spontaneous Processes Initiated by the Environment
I despise the terminology 'survival of the fittest' with a passion boarding irrational. Too many believe 'fit' is a measurable criteria that we can test individuals for! Most of this irritation comes from having heard these words parroted by people who don't understand genetics one to many times. Not so much directed at the channel itself, I'm watching you for a reason, but constant exposure has caused an instinctive reactions... so you will have to deal with the rant. Sorry, but hey... that us youtube for you. I have seen far too many base their entire genetic philosophy off the vagueness of these four words alone, ignoring all other factors that go into evolution. Some have even used these words to justify some really grotesque behavior in the past... looking at you eugenics. For that alone we should be looking for a better piece of terminology that describes the factors that go into the reproduction side of genetics. For "Survival of the fittest" has little to do with the health of an individual, what most consider fitness, and more to do with reproductive ability. There are many genetic conditions that eventually cripple or outright kill, but do nothing to impact the ability to reproduce and be passed on. Maybe we need to replace the word 'fitness' with something that better reflects we are referring to their ability to reproduce successfully.
Think this might better sum up my frustration: In trying to focus on how the 'fittest individual' of a species survives/reproduces, we ignore the fact the rest of the species is also surviving/reproducing along side them.
I did. Epigenetic switches seem to be able to modify eating habbits for several generations. Softly heritable epigenetic modifications of sex choice may be possible as well.
So if I have a 16” member I can conclude this may not be an abnormally, impractical as it may be, but merely the preference of females for extravaganza...
Jon, what could have been an excellent introduction to the subject was spoilt by your use of anthropomorphic language. Please avoid words such as ‘babies’ when referring to the offspring or young of non human species. Your audience has long since outgrown play school level of understanding (unless they are deluded religionists). On a personal note, I had to blank out the appearances of the eight legged creatures as I have a horror of them. Such close up scenes were unwatchable. Please could you warn us if they are to appear on screen? As always, Jon, kind regards from your European correspondent in 🏴

so why do some men consider big butts attractive and some find very tiny butts more attractive?
Except that attraction to breasts is cultural, not innate. There are many cultures where breasts are not a big deal, but *legs* and especially thighs are highly sexualized.
