Nice! I went to Grandfather yesterday and had a lot of fun scrambling rocks.. Heard about deep gap trail when researching more scrambling! I also watched your hanging rock video, thanks for all the info!
I am glad to hear that those vids were helpful. I know it’s a little bit of a trek, but Old Rag up in Shenandoah NP is the true “grandad” of rock scrambles. If you can make the trip, it is worthwhile! Thanks for the comment.
The technology behind 3D maps is crazy. It is so helpful to understand an up-and-down trail like this one. I am glad you found it helpful, too. Hope you get a chance to experience it! Thanks for the comment.
The great thing about Mt. Mitchell is that you can drive to the top - and decide how much you want to invest in a hike. You can go the entire ridgeline to Deep Gap as we did - or just go to Mt. Craig for a shorter hike with great views - or just do the short 1/4 hike on the paved summit trail to Mt. Mitchell. There are many options. Thanks for the comment.
Try the Black Mountain Hiking Challenge, sponsored by the NC High Peaks Trail Association. If you do all of the trails in the Black Mountains, they will give you a cool patch to commemorate your victory.
me and my girlfriend love going to Mount Mitchell. we just recently did the old mitchell, camp allice and commissary tail. we both had fun doing that one we are planing on going to deep gap this weekend we hope. on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard do u think it is ?
Old Mitchell, huh? Nice! Since the Deep Gap trail follows a ridgeline, it has diversity of elevation gain, which makes it much more manageable (and interesting). It only has a little bit of rock scrambling with a few ropes to assist you, but is much more technical than the Mount Mitchell Trail (with less distance and elevation gain). This puts it on the easier side of difficult (but still difficult). Overall a 7/10. I hope that helps. Thanks for the question - and good luck. The other thing that can make this hike difficult is the weather. I hope it cooperates for you.
You are welcome. I enjoyed making the video. The plane crash is about 1.2 miles from the trailhead. I hope you get a chance to experience it. Thanks for the question.

Thanks! I appreciated the maps that showed the peaks and details of the terrain and peaks!

Great hike on the trail. We were just near Mount Mitchell this summer but we didn’t hike up there! Great share! -S
