Whenever I listen to this I wonder if the people in that room knew that this was going to become one of the most iconic musical theatre songs of all time

I love the "meee doooooown!" here... Idina really took the riffless option and said "this is how it's done." only to rarely do it during her run

I really love the extended “I hope you’re happy” part in this version, it just adds a little extra to make the song more impactful when Elphaba does defy gravity 💚

I was thinking the same thing. It flows better. The current version is awkward by comparison

7:07 This is how this part was originally written; only when Idina Menzel joined and practiced with Schwartz, it was her idea to sing it higher:
"Menzel began imagining the actual scene as it would unfold on stage. As she pictured herself rising in the air for the last verse of the song, she had the idea that the music could mirror what was going on. “I’m going up into the air, and then I wanted to sing up there.” As she recalls, “I said, ‘How would you feel if I sing this up an octave?’ And he was cool with it. I’m really glad that he liked the idea. You know, you’re flying physically; you’re flying vocally.” Schwartz expressed concern that she might not be able to sing it eight times a week, but Menzel promised she could and would. And so from that point on, the final verse of “Defying Gravity” would be what they worked out in Schwartz’s studio that day."

For some reason, I adore this version! I get that riffs are cool and I must admit, they often give me goosebumps, but as a theater song, Defying Gravity is much more epic without the riffs. Idina's voice is so clear here, never flat, never shaky. However, the quality of the recording device makes the sound funny when they belt, but that's just the sound quality. I much prefered this version's ending as it was more powerful, honest and fragile, escpecially the little crack at the end, which idina shouldn't get hate for. Anyone with anything hurtful to say just don't properly understand the art of theater and only care about the riffs and runs, which is compleley unfair. So if that's what you want, search some place else, because Idina Menzel is one of the best performers Broadway has ever seen. I do understand that Idina lacks technique, which can have a long-term affect, but she has talent, unlike most of the haters.
