My method for picking out beanie boos was inspired by my dad, because he picks out his die cast cars this way!
PS: I stayed safe! I kept my 6 ft distance from everyone in the store, kept my mask on the entire time, used hand sanitizer before and after entering the stores, and my family and I have not been sick at all

Here's a tip: put toothpaste on a toothbrush spread the toothpaste around the beanie boos eyes get some water and wash the toothpaste off the eyes and the scratches should be gone

I have a general experience with picking the best plushies, though. Apart from what you described, it’s always important to choose the cleanest plush. A lot of people are really dirty, and touch fabric with their hands all dirty. Thoroughly checking all the fur saves one from a nasty surprise later on!
