In this old 4WD Action dvd I've had to go and hire a Troopcarrier because Milo's motor is out and down at Terrain Tamer where my old mate Alan Gray is supervising the strip down. There's a fascinating yarn with Alan about the condition of the 13BT motor, which was a grey import plucked from a little dump truck that must have got abused in it's early life in Japan. However with good servicing since it got chucked into Milo it'd gone on to do almost 400,000km before finally blowing. It's a testament to regular servicing, good Terrain Tamer filters and Penrite Oil - and you can see it all here up close. Makes you realise how much a real mechanic like Al can pick up just by examining the parts.
So I have to go shoot a DVD, but not only is Milo out of action the film crew is a couple of good looking young girls from Sydney - hmm, not the usual blokes trip at all! Worse than that they get to rescue me as part of learning how to 4wd! Wow, it's full of weird memories not the least being the use of an air jack to get the Troopy out of a sand bog.
I'll have more to say about air jacks later - they've come a hell of a long way from this thing that was basically good for one use before disintegrating from the exhaust fumes and the latest effort from the Bush Company that we stock in the Roothy shop is really good. Check it out at
Righto - if nothing else it shows how much adventuring you can get done even with a basic hire truck - it helps being in the best country on earth! Go on, get out there!!!

It would be nice if 4wd action 24/7 still made films like this! Thanks for bringing these old films back Roothy, cant wait to get out there.
Couldn't agree more!
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY well I'm glad vic is out of lockdown now. Keen to head back to South Gippsland region. All those little towns on the SGH are jam packed with history if you go looking for it.
Mate you don't realise how much you mis the outback until you see these stories, cheers Roothy thanks for sharing. Look out 2021 red dust, red beans & red meat oh and cold beer.......
Love seeing these older videos. Also love seeing the Troopies. All the best from Dubai, perhaps I’ll make it to Oz one day.
How good is this video.
It reminds me of everything good about touring.
Amazing stuff. Thanks for making and sharing.
17:44 the good ol'e towball snatch
Dexter Morgan yep. Not the smartest thing to do and a bit common back then too.
Ah I seen it too. But hey gotta do what you gotta do sometimes and they are quite strong just know it's limits and work with in it 👍
Cracking video Roothy
Bloody ripper of a vid mate.
Keep it up :)
Good job old mate.......garlic and chilly I use it on beach pippys ...some bloke in a old green Toyota showed me....ha ha might see you on Fraser some time in my green truck...take care....PS snach strap no no ...
Touring and stories have always been your best Roothy.
Was that snatch strap put over the tow ball?
You see it a lot in older videos, all the recovery sins before experience had taught the dangers. Same with the old exhaust jacks, you don't see them around much anymore, with the amount of people that were hurt by shifting loads, and sudden bag failures.
I played it twice. Looks like it was put over tow ball. Bad John
Whilst i wouldn't do it unless there was no other option, this isnt really a problem if its more of a light tug rather than a proper "snatch". Ive been in situations where i have had to tug someone out using their shipping tie down points. Theres no shock loading on this recovery which is the real issue when using a towball. Props to the recovery driver here, such a smooth take up of slack then just drives out. Im surprised you dont hear of more high lift jack related injuries
Roothy, did you put that snatch strap over the tow ball?
Yes he did!👎
Sober cooking segment? Must have been back when you were trying to set a good impression! Good vid, thanks for sharing
It’s Charleville not Charlieville. Edit required. Thanks for the vid🎉
Ok, thanks
Too bad you're not still with 4wd 24/7, nobody tells stories like you mate.
