It's supposed to be taking place a few years after cobra kai, so same timeline, same universe. However I don't think it will be required to watch cobra kai to see the movie, but I think watching cobra kai will enhance the experience of this movie
So basically, since this takes place after Cobra Kai, Cobra Kai shows Daniel’s experience as a martial arts teacher, and this movie will continue his role as a teacher rather than the student we saw him as in the first three movies.
