- This TV was assembled at Zenith's Springfield, Missouri final assembly plant which opened in 1969. Most components were made at Zenith's home facilities in Chicago and even some from Zenith's Reynosa, Mexico facility was only a few years old at the time. This TV uses the Space Command 600Z remote control

His whole house is a time capsule. Look at that place!
Hi
@@stevejobs3930 Hey Steve. I’m glad you’re back from the dead.
Found a 1984 zenith that was sitting in a barn for 15 years. Cleaned out the insides and turned it on. Still worked.
That's nice! 👍☺️
That's because "The quality goes in before the name goes on"
Back then, any TV with a handle on the top was called "portable" even if it was very heavy and could only run on AC power. The same thing was true with early "portable" computers! :-)
People were stronger back then :) And judging from the complicated remote control instructions, they had to be smarter, too 😃
Portable as in easier to move from room to room. No need for an army. Obviously :)
@@joestewart8914 HaHa...funny as hell! 😁🤭👍
My mom bought one of the first portable Sony Color Trinitrons. (1969) KV-1210U
It was a high quality build and had an awesome picture! The knobs and wood case were very solid and it was HEAVY! It even had headphone jacks, solid state and UHF. Trinitron debuted in 1968 but did not hit the states until 1969 when UHF was added. I have a picture of myself from 1969 in a baby cradle on the kitchen table next to her brand new Sony TV and a TV Guide on the table with Glen Campbell on the cover! Lolz!
Adjusted for inflation, that set would cost well over
$2, 000.00 new today.
@@cleeboy5048 Sony still expensive, you get what you pay for, Sony probably the best but have good competition these days
That tidy packaging of the insides is jaw-dropping. This is astounding.
I have the same set with all the paperwork and remote , like it was bought yesterday . i have good size collection myself , tv's from the late 40's to the 80's ,the color roundies are my favorites .
Your Videos 📹 are the best 👌 👍, Zenith Radio TV 📺 and Stereo was the best you could get , we had good luck with them 😀 😊 !!!!!!
Nice trip down memory lane for me. I sold and serviced only Zenith TVs in the 70s and 80s. and cleaned a lot of those push on module connectors back then and it was one of the biggest problems with this chassis after a few years. The IF module (big silver one on left side) was prone to connection issues. It still was a good design for servicing and a giant advancement from the vacuum tube sets. The System 3 went to using edge snap on connectors like the two on the module plugged to the back of the picture tube and they were very reliable. Thank you for producing this video.
That looks like a very nice television set. The picture quality that those chromacolors give off is amazing!
My grandparents had a TV like this in their spare bedroom when I was a kid. Little me thought it was the coolest thing!
It's amazing how you're able to find these sets, especially in such mint condition with all its original paperwork.
It's 3 months younger than me. I want to find one of these old sets, preferably mostly solid state, to restore one of these days. Thanks for sharing!
you gave me a nice nostalgia flashback to my childhood, i remember when the old tv remotes of the early days had a 20 foot cord that went all the way to the tv along with the old manual crank dials like an old school landline telephone, those were the good ol days. lol
Yay!! It finally posted after getting 2 tease emails from UA-cam. I love the Chromacolor IIs. My all-time favorite sets. Surprised to see you with one Doug! Congrats!
1961 was the year Zenith debuted the tv remote with their patented Space Command
Awesome! I want a 1970s portable TV for my room!
i like your tv. my aunt use to have a tv just like yours. that was my favorite tv ever. nice 😊❤
LONG TIME NO SEE!!! nice set.
Now you know why some people call the remote control a "clicker."
We used to point our clicker out the window when we knew our next-door neighbor was watching a baseball game. He never found out who it was.
Same frequency pranks happen and still do just not under those circumstances.
i love your house please show avideo on it thanks for all your work
Another fine vintage TV set shown for our viewing pleasure.
Nice and solid Tv! I like the motorized channel search system.
The insides are insane
House is very clean 😊
Glad to see your making video's again! This TV looks like it has a great picture and looks like it is in mint condition! Thanks for taking the time to show us :)
"The quality goes in before the name goes on" from memory.
I get motion sickness watching this video due to the shaking of the camera. Great set!
😊Zenith Color TV 📺 Radio,& Stereo ' s were the very best 👌 👍 😊!!
Cool tv. Your home is very clean and uncluttered too. Also looks like it was built to be durable along with the furniture. This video can be from 1978 if you filmed it in super8 and recorded the sound on an 8track
Yeah - the furniture in particularly is very retro. He should go into business as a set dresser / prop finder (for Stranger Things!).
@@AshleyPomeroyI had some awesome floral furniture and my kids ruined it.
I don’t miss it though. Haha
Like a previous comment, the years pass by rather quickly, I used one of these on my barge on the English canals, 1971 DRH, my pleasure my man...Les... good watching, keep them coming.
Thank you for making these videos. I loved my Zenith TV.
This tv will forever hold a place with me. I absolutely love it
My grandmother has a nice upright chassis Chromacolor II console from 1974 (you can see it in my old tech at grandma's video). She wants to get rid of it, but so far no takers. Works fine aside from needing some contact cleaner on the tuner and Colormatic switch.
Wow, I love this! You have all the original printed materials, too. Wish I had a set like this one. Perfect for any room, especially the bedroom. My grandparent's had a 25" Zenith from around 1973 with the same kind of remote.
As for channel 6 the radio station is now Me-TV 87.7 hence the Me-TV channel displayed on the TV.
Incredible to see with all the paperwork! It looks like you just brought it home from the store.
The insides of this set are gorgeous. A clear back panel would make this one a beauty.
I live in Rolla MO which is a couple hours east of Springfield MO. I remember the Zenith plant in Springfield and also remember the news coverage of it closing around 1985. I have a friend Jim McShane who lives in Orland Park IL who used to repair my tube audio equipment. Thanks for all your videos. I respect a time when US manufacturing was the norm and we could be proud of purchasing an American designed and made product.
I love your period dinette set, too!
Nice set Doug. Always enjoy your videos.
Glad your back!!!!
what a classic we had one
Man I would hate to work on this set... Great video!
I had one of those, by 1978 the name was definitely going on without the quality going in. The end of American-made electronics was clearly in sight by 1978.
I like that the first thing you see when switching on your several decade old TV is advertisements for new television services.
I remember as a kid when we had the subsonic sound or mechanical remote control, I could take some pocket change and keep dropping in into a toy metal wagon I had and the channels on the TV would change. I used to prank my dad with that trick.
I should have said Ultrasonic sound not subsonic! Sorry.
I may be getting a Chromacolor II from someone for $15. I can't wait to get it!!
beautiful TV!
I would like to find a 13" Zenith, like you have, very nice!!
Back when TVs were TVs, and not flat panels.
Una maravilla en esa época este televisor Zenith. Y eran muy caros. Pocos tenían el privilegio de contar con uno y disfrutar de la imagen a color.😊
Really cool video. I hope you do more.
Another great video Doug! With your interest and knowledge of electronics I am surprised you are not an amateur radio operator.
I'm surprised they were still using the mechanical remote and motorized tuner when electronic tuners were becoming more and more common and cheaper to make. The tuner looks quite intimidating when you first peek behind the panel -- but I guess this was still back in the day when your TV salesman would set up the TV for you upon purchase. Also, FM radio uses 75 kHz audio deviation while TV audio is 25 kHz deviation, so a ch.6 station transmitting FM audio will sound louder than other TV stations.
We had a mid-70's woodgrain Quasar TV and the remote also had the old aluminum tuning rods. The Quasar remotes were a bit louder than the Zenith when pressed. We also had a late-70's Sharp and Sony Trinitron. Both of those had battery powered sonic remotes which you could hear when you put your ear up to the remote speaker.
nice remote! The built-in bunny ears are a nice feature as well.
Doug, you are THE MAN when it comes to Zenith. I have a bunch of Zeniths myself, but your collection makes me look like a beginner. CCII is my preference also. Thanks for showing this set, also I was wondering where you were, its been a while!
Really cool. Thanks for sharing.
Very very nice find!! You are entirely correct in your preference's of the best era at zenith. Later Zenth's well yah know the rest is history....:)
Had this been in Dallas Ft. Worth he would’ve gotten CBS.
This is really good for 78
You have a very nice house and furnishings. I recently scored a 1985 Zenith that looks gently used. Its one keypad sets with remote control that uses the type J battery. The remote looks and works great but the TV is a bit tired. I suspect it was a set that was turned on with the remote and mostly left on the same channel all day.
I'm with you. I'd like to get a CC 2 or earlier someday. Older TV's are hard to come by here in WV.
The Amazing things is the Remot control, that oparate with the sound off click, no battery 😮
Where do you find all this cool stuff? I collect 50's furniture and stuff, but hardly ever see old TV's and stereos.
That's cool how they still use 87.7 FM
Sometimes people refer to TV remote as a clicker! And now we know why :)
This is so cool
I had this tv as a kid and I learned how to fix it from a cousins husband mine didn’t have a remote
Control panel was similar to the later early 1980's models. Mine was a 1982 without the remote control.
This television may have sold in my country chile in 1978, when the color came to the television
thats a fine television made by zenth .
if you're talking about DTV and a converter box, then yes, with an adapter to convert the 75 ohm coaxial "F" type "TV out" on the back of the average converter box to the 300 ohm twin lead connections on the back of the set (the four screws just to the left of the antennae) a TV like this can be retrofitted to receive DTV stations.
get a load of that remote system.
flipping dope and the way the chanel selector spins isis a so pure dope like an old 70s hotpot washing machine from the UK.
nice jam packed tv
nice video!
It seems like they switched to digital before this was made. You would need a converter box now
I bought a TV like that from a warehouse that sells old hotel TVs. It had glass over it just like that one, but it tinted dark so I took it off.
MOST OF THESE TV'S COULD GIVE YOU A HERNIA TOTING THEM AROUND...AND THAT COMPLICATED TUNING WAS FOR THE BIRDS...I LOVE OUR SETS TODAY....
Regarding Channel 6 audio.....TV audio deviation is 25 Khz while FM broadcast deviation is 75 Khz which is why TV audio on 87.75 was lower on an FM radio compared to the rest of the band. Unlike full power TV signals, LPTV doesn't have a rule on audio deviation. Several enterprising individuals realized this and applied for a Channel 6 allocation for a LPTV and utilized 75 Khz audio deviation so the audio at 87.75 would have competitive audio with the FM band but louder on a TV.
Great video!
John Cazale on MASH. Your house is spectacular.
looks brand new
The "bonger" type remotes were in its last days in 1978. Shake your keys near your TV and it changes channels.
Once I picked up a spanish music channel here in Pittsburgh. It was at one point coming in color with sound, then faded away almost immediately after.
Sebi's Random Tech The days of analog TV has had random stations from other cities coming in every once in a while but then it fades after a few hours.
Back in the day we used to call those Space Command style remotes 'clickers', for obvious reasons!
I would take it that this was a pretty high end little TV for the time.
That TV is sweet! Great overview Doug. Where did you happen to find this set?
Is the entire house like a period piece I'm looking at the kitchen appliances!?
Love it
Looks mint condition
Can we all please go back to that time when being lazy was not an option
Are you from the Chicago area? I can tell by your accent.
Why didn’t you say “rabbit ears”? Almost made me cry bruh.
The kids on lave eye crying 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I have a 1981 Zenith Space Command with the remote, but just for shits and giggles I wanted to see if it worked with a Universal Remote, and yes it does, not that it matters, because you have to use it with a converter box these days and it comes with it's own remote.
Bullt better than today's televisions. Most are crap quality now
Period correct table, chairs, and more.
12:10 reminds me of the new Mac Air computer, which is quite packed inside. I sure that TV weighed in at 30 lbs.
I need to figure out that digital converter transmitter.
one day I might try to convert this tv to a cable tv so I can watch my shows like in 1978 but in 2016
Fun Fact: Zenith was bought by appliance manufacturer Goldstar who later changed their name to LG.
can you set up DVR on it please reply im just wondering
