    LYRICS
I mothballed a king, I mummified the thing
Put him somewhere safe and dark and cold
I released all the beasts that didn’t pull for me
Swept out the corners of the fold.
Well my skeleton’s a little stunned
Relieved by the loosening of skin
Drunk on naiveté ‘cause it’s got a taste
Like nothing that I’ve ever had before
I spike the recipe and turn my inner peace
Into an aching for some more.
Well my skeleton’s been playing dumb
He’s seen this happen many times before
Ow! Ow, how it hurts. Please gimme more
Ow! Ow, how it hurts. Please gimme more.
My one regret is that I can’t forget
The perfect man I was a life ago.
My two thirsty ears good medicine years
Have kept me here so safe and dark and cold
Well my skeleton has come undone
He busts a gut and lays down on the floor.
Ow! Ow, how it hurts. Please gimme more

    “Ouch” Easter Eggs:
    1. “Saskadelphia” town sign; “Est. 1990”, the year 4 of the 6 songs from Saskadelphia were recorded.
    2. Airstream Caravel trailer and horse, as on “Road Apples” album sleeve.
    3. “Ouch” font same as “Hip” in “Tales from the Hip” newsletter.
    4. “The Clubhouse” sign, a reference to the Hip’s inner sanctum at their Bathouse studio; also looks like the Misty Moon’s blue neon sign in Halifax, a venue where the Hip performed a memorable Road Apples era gig.
    5. “Reformed Baptist Blues” ends as Jay enters.
    6. A bunch of Hip Albums in the jukebox: Saskadelphia, Road Apples, Fully Completely, In Between Evolution, Live Between Us, In Violet Light, Day for Night…
    7. Sarah McLachlan record in the jukebox; back vocals from Sarah were added to a special version of “Emergency”, for World Vision’s Thirty Hour Famine 1998 edition.
    8. Also in the jukebox, albums by artists that the band liked: Poco, Steely Dan, Simon and Garfunkel.
    9. Hank Williams record in the jukebox, a reference to Hank’s concert poster in the « Little Bones » video.
    10. Various license plates from provinces and states the Hip toured.
    11. “Road Apples” Diamond record hanging on the wall.
    12. Unidentifiable Gold or Platinum record right of dartboard, and “In Between Evolution” Platinum record right beside it.
    13. “Phantom Power” Platinum record left of dartboard.
    14. Gord Downie’s white cowboy hat hanging by mounted deer head.
    15. Gord Downie’s tan cowboy hat right of the rooster sign.
    16. “Route 66” sign, title of a Bobby Troup song the Hip used to cover.
    17. “The Rodents” shirt, a reference to both long-ago KCIV Variety Show and “Poets” video.
    18. “The Rodents” poster by the cash register.
    19. Niagara Falls postcard, a reference to “Daredevil” from “Day for Night” (strays a bit from the Road Apples pattern though).
    20. “Trois Pistols” bottle, a reference to “Three Pistols”.
    21. Bottle of “Gordon’s” gin, a salute to both Gordons.
    22. Rick Mercer drinking Road Apples Thornbury cider.
    23. Cans of Road Apples Thornbury cider stacked in the fridge.
    24. Central Park postcard left of the chalkboard; a reference to “Gus the Polar Bear…” (from “In Between Evolution”).
    25. Rick Mercer: “Blow at High Dough” intro was the musical theme of his “Made in Canada” show.
    26. Black cap hanging above the license plates, behind Jay; looks like the one G. Downie was wearing for the Strombo interview and performance.
    27. Notre-Dame-de-Paris gargoyle as on shirts and concert posters; also is the Bathouse recording studio’s mascot (can be seen on the front yard there).
    28. « Ouch » handwritten lyrics with edition marks appearing to a hallucinating Jay.
    29. Caribou hallucination, a reference to “Long Time Running”.
    30. “Another Roadside Attraction” poster with Sheryl Crow, Wilco and so on, left of mounted deer head.
    31. “Happy hour is here”, “$2.50 High Ball, $1.50 Beer”, from “Littles Bones”.
    32. Hip + Spirit of the West poster for the Saturday, August 13, 1994 concert at Cabaret Metro, Chicago.
    33. Skeleton: other than the “Ouch” lyrics reference, it also alludes to “Skeletons come here to dance” (“Trickle Down”, from “Up to Here”).
    34. Various items (specimens of taxidermy -especially bear-, postcards of Toronto, wild river, etc., hockey sticks, moon and so on) evoke -to varying degrees- songs from the Hip’s pre- and post-Road Apples albums, as well as elements of the Hip’s universe.

    Easter egg:

License plate with registration for Ontario, 1972. "If there's a goal that everyone remembers, it was back in Ol' 72." I'm sure the station wagon is a clue, too.
Whole video feels like a nod to the lyric from Trickle Down: "Skeletons come here to dance"
Plunking down cash on the bar: "He said, 'I'm fabulously rich'"
Is the Niagara postcard a reference to "Daredevil" maybe??

He told the story about Gord calling him to clarify a pronounciation for a song he was writing: Isle aux Morts. Love the fact that Rick suggested he could call his dad to corroborate the story - which Gord did? :) lol too awesome. Some Easter eggs I noticed :
    - The road apples album cover is created in the opening scene
    - Rick Mercer is drinking Thornbury Craft "Road Apples" Cider
    - Jay B is wearing a "The Rodents" t-shirt (nod to the Poets video)
    - I think the Tunnel to "The Clubhouse" the actual alley to "The Toucan" (bar/pub and music venue) in Kingston.
    - The liquor bottle that he asks for is called "Three Pistols"
    - The chalk board says "Happy Hour is here" and lists "$2.50 Highball" and "$1.50 beer" below it.
    - Directly above the chalkboard is a liquor bottle that just shows the letters "Gord"
    - I think the story of Jay throwing all his money around is a nod to Blowin high dough
    - There's a tragically hip and spirit of the west poster hanging to the left of the dartboard
    - Those 3 silos at the end are in Kingston as well I believe, off the 401.
Thats all I got for now! Thanks!

Juke Box first page: POCO Album. This is a Fred Penner Album. 1981. Originally released as "The Polka Dot Pony". Fred, in his 2018 Acceptance speech for the award of "Children's Album of the year" makes reference to two things: The Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Legacy Room onboard the Polar Prince Expedition ship (part of a project for Canada 150) and a quote he likes to use " Never underestimate your ability to make a difference in the life of a child". The ship itself, was part of a project to explore themes of Diversity and Inclusion, Reconciliation, Youth Engagement and the Environment. I didn't know about this project but it was very cool to research the link starting with the POCO album in the juke box in this video :) . Many thanks for the clue that lead me to this information. As we move through June 2021, I am struggling to find a way to mark Canada Day - usually I have a beer and throw on some Hip...head to the lake. I had been thinking that a pause would be better this year as the 215 Indigenous Children recently discovered have me horrified and unable to celebrate Canada as a nation at this time. I have not lost hope in the future nor do I deny that this country could find a way forward that could be kind, contain honest dialogue between citizens, and be full of positive experiences and new beginnings. This year I was planning to make space to listen to Indigenous stories, to say : 'I hear you' and 'I believe you'. Given the spirit of the C3 project on the Polar Prince, Gord's Chanie Wenjack Fund perhaps I can listen to some Hip, lean into the Residential School Survivor Stories and use this time to reflect on Canada's horrific past and how I will navigate 'being Canadian' under this new to me knowledge (to be clear its apparrent its not new information coming to light). Surely in this '"diverse as ever scene", I will somehow, "Know which way to go" . As a nation, it's time to "go somewhere we are needed, find somewhere to grow" ......
