After seeing this video I splurged on a wonderful book of Georgia O'Keeffe watercolors from her early years. I'm so glad I did!! She wrote to a friend in July 1917: "Cheap paper like this is a great friend lately -- A stack of it almost a foot high makes me feel downright reckless."
I'm with you on the palettes. I will never come up with a set of colors that I don't want to move around and reorg. So lately I've just opted for half pans and a traditional metal palette. I do my mixing on either a Corelle plate or my Mijello palette. The Mijello palette has nice ramps and I wish someone would come out with a palette with ramps that had pan inserts for the ramps so you could move the colors around. That would be my ideal world.
@@iritlandgraf Well, the little Mijello Palette like the one I'll link to has little ramps on its wells, so that you can touch the paint with the side of your brush and then if you want, either mix it in its well or slide it to the mixing space. It is so handy and so easy on brushes....except that you only have room for 18 paints and the wells are fixed, as you mentioned in your video. So wouldn't it be nice if there was a palette with the same sort of configuration, but with little "well inserts", so you could load up the paint, have the little ramps, but be able to pick up the "well inserts" and swap them around. For this to work, all wells would need to be the same size and shape, so this Mijello palette would need to be recreated, but I would love it. I love these little palettes, except for the fixed wells. www.amazon.com/Mijello-Airtight-Watercolor-18-Well-Fuchsia/dp/B002664868/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3UWZNYIJZ9QP7&keywords=mijello+palette&qid=1639767100&sprefix=mijello+palette%2Caps%2C127&sr=8-3
I just realized that the Robax palettes have the well inserts! They just need to have one angled side on each well and they'd be what I want! ;-). The wells on the Mijello palettes facilitate rolling the brush on it's side to pick up the paint, which is hard to beat.
I felt it when you said you "bought all the things." I did the same and now I'm surrounded by art crap. Honestly the hoarder in me loves it, but I know its too much for 1 person.
I bit the bullet and donated a bag full to a starving artist friend. I’m down to a more acceptable level now and it feels a lot better. And he got to try lots of new thing and replenish his low stocks with old favourites.
The yarn in your background is so yummy. My two loves are knitting and watercolor-so your decor speaks to me. I get paper sheets (Fabriano artistico and Arches) when on sale-buy them 10 at a time for a discount and I make my own sketchbook or cut them to the size I want. You can even get Canson and Strathmore sheets if looking at less expensive sheets. Great advice as always.
I really enjoyed this video and agree with so much of what you said. I was lucky enough when moving into watercolor from oil painting to have received recommendations for excellent supplies, so I don’t NEED to buy more or different supplies, but I love haul and review videos for ideas, new products and new colors. My splurge-worthy supply is a pochade box that really fits your style (I use a U.GO medium). This works outdoors, but is also an excellent small space indoor easel. The other supply that I love is a good portable palette with lots of mixing space - and recommend a Holbein metal palette. I’m still looking for the perfect porcelain studio palette.
I enjoy/love watching videos that show you how to truly play with watercolors in free abstract ways, no lines, just playing with paint and water and watching the magic!!!!! It would be so cool to watch a video series of creating a watercolor journal play book. Different colors different looks. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ BTW, I bought several items from your shop and I love them!!!!!!!
Thank you Renee! So glad to hear! I have soooo many painting videos on my channel from the last year and a half I felt I needed to switch things up a bit 😉
This was such an informative video. Thank you SO much! I actually started with the Sennelier watercolor set as well--still love it so much and agree with everything you said. I want to expand my collection since I've hit pan on a few of those Sennelier colors, so your suggestions are so helpful! The dot cards will help find similar colors in other brands to the ones I clearly use a lot so I can try a new brand without buying a whole set. 😀
Hiya Irit, I love the video and I've only just found your channel to which I've subscribed. I noticed that you mentioned customs charges and they now apply to UK citizens buying goods from the EU post Brexit. I think that a lot of us ( I'm in England) forget when ordering from the EU as for so long it didn't apply to us. Thanks very much Irit, stay safe and well, David.x
Hi David and welcome! Yes, sadly Brexit changed many things. Personally I used to order regularly from UK shops but now it's usually too expensive... Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video!
Such a great video , thank you . I’m so happy you don’t do huge hauls I find them really off putting, your videos were instrumental in guiding me back into art , many gems of wisdom and advice and inspiration. I’ve bought khadi paper on your recommendation, the dot cards , a dagger brush ….. I love them all . My palette is constantly evolving and changing as I find out what I really love but the unusual paints ( granulating or handmade ) have all been worth the splurge , all discovered through you . Thank you Irit ☀️
I much prefer content where an artist is sharing their process and ideas. I have enough to make art. Haul/swatching videos are nice to watch when I need to zone out. Thanks for your suggestions and considered approach.
I think you have mentioned every absolutely important item! I would maybe also add a water container that gives you joy - which in my case is a favorite pickle jar, but I know you love your Jackson’s three part container. Just surrounding yourself with items that make you happy in your art corner/space is everything! And I think that less is more - don’t buy too much, you’ll get overwhelmed. Love the video!
I have a favorite pickle jar too! Too funny! But I did get that blue and white 3 part one from Jackson’s it makes me happy to use. My old faithful pickle jar is always on standby though.
So currently I have splurged on a bunch of paul rubens paints. I got two 12 pan sets. Mind you I also hold watercolor classes at my work, so while I foot the bill, they do serve me twice. And I am loving the paint. It is super smooth. It creates exceptionally smooth washes. And the paint it packed with pigment. I have qor, DS, M.graham and winsor newton, and these paul rubens might be the brightest most pigmented of them all.
Irit, I have a gorgeous porcelain palette (American Journey Cavalcade from Cheap Joes) that has 30 outer watercolor wells and 2 very large mixing areas. Sadly, after using it for awhile, I realized that I don’t like my watercolor mixtures all merging in one big space and that I prefer to squeeze from the tube, but I absolutely won’t mix on anything but porcelain now. So, I have several smaller porcelain pallets I purchased on Amazon ranging from $8 to $30. Treat yourself and find a smaller one (or two! 😊) that lets you use the colors you want and truly allows you to see the color you are mixing as they don’t bead up. Blessings from the States!
Hello Irit. I so agree on curated palettes. When there is an artist who inspires you and you love their colour choices it makes sense that their curated palette would give you joy. UA-cam us great for discovering new “tools” but also seeing those “tools” in action. One of the aspects of Tracy Lebenzon’s brushes that I love is the organic handles….feels great in the hand. Also, being light makes it easier for my arthritic fingers. Another great video Irit….thankyou for sharing. Take care. PS. My Irit Stamp set #2 arrived yesterday! So a happy dance was in order! 😁
Oh yay!! I'm so glad and thank you for the update. I was watching your order as the international ones are a bit more complicated to fulfill so I'm really happy it got to you😀
The Fabriano notebook is really great for gouache. I like it for watercolor (cream-colored pages are different for me) and I love it for gouache. It is beautiful and semi-affordable from Cult Pens. It looks much nicer than than my handmade Arches sketchbook, which is also super fun. I can't wait to fill it up and decide if I should buy the biggest one.
Hello Irit! I love your videos and thank you for sharing your art and talent! I was wondering, in this video and others where you are seated in the same spot, the painting to your left shoulder, the one closest to your yarn, do you have a tutorial on how to paint that? I absolutely LOVE it, and would really like to learn to recreate it. I've looked through your videos but can't seem to find it.
Thank you and I really appreciate the kind words! I do have a couple of videos painting such a scene, check my channel, they are from about 3-4 months ago 😀
I have to many paints. Actually the same colors from different lines. The reviews are so overwhelming. I've ended up with colors I never touched. Thank you for your advice.
a full sized easel def is nice to have 😀 shame they take up so much space even folded up. you can sometimes get cheap ones on ebay that maybe just need the screw replaced/tightened
One of the most beautiful textile books I own is a hardcover titled The Art of Annemeike Mein. She is an amazing wildlife textile artist! Great splurge item suggestions Irit! Thanks. I think...😂
I have learned SO much from you & for that I am grateful. After watching you use the Tracy Lebenzon brushes last year I purchased some with a 20% off & only included the orange one which was your favorite, well it is fabulous for all the reasons you mentioned. They were a necessary splurge & so completely worth it!! I have pretty much adopted your current large palette of colors as we enjoy the same colors. Thanks for all you share!!💗
Mixing on ceramic is really another level of experiencing painting with watercolor. Plus no staining and suuuper easy cleaning ! The big Ceramic studio palettes with wells to pour your paint in don't work for me either. So I use a palette with no mixing place just to store my paint (I use the palette tower from studio of MM) and then ceramic palettes/ plates for mixing purposes. It works for me because I don't really paint outside of my home (I have a small metal travel palette but I barely use it ) and it can store a lot of colour without taking too much desk space.
My worry is that my grown daughter will decide that we must Marie Kondo my studio! Then I will beat her away with a broom stick. Come to think of it, maybe I could declutter. The problem is that every item brings me joy! Painting and all its accoutrements is truly a wonderful thing!
Great video! I personally have way too many artist grade watercolors from various brands. I store the tubes by brand but I'm starting to think I should reorganize by color. I have separate palettes for each brand and it's getting quite cumbersome. After having painted for four years I wish I could go back and just use one brand. My guilty splurge was Sennelier tubes curated by Billy Showell. ;) I was the one who didn't like the Fabriano journal. Though it beautiful inside and out, it's not quite right for my style. For more loose styles it's perfect. I agree about paper. I have many blocks of Arches and also many sketchbooks from Bee Creative which seem impossible to find now. My best art books are Jean Haines' books and Billy Showell's.
I believe Amazon has some Bee Creative sketchbooks in a larger size right now (3/19). The small ones are coming in at Blick's at the beginning of April. I too am looking for them as they are the only ones I’ve liked out of the probably 15 I currently have. I bought the mixed media on the recommendation of a content creator. They’re not for me.
@@Angie-pl3uw I agree. Mixed media paper is ok for ink and wash but not for my watercolor. I have several of the larger size WC journals as they came to Blick a month or so ago. I just finished my last 8x8 journal. Happy painting!
I don’t actually know if these textile artists have books but if they did they would absolutely be must haves: Maximo Laura, Mariko Kusumoto and Vanessa Barragão.
Since you've used Sennelier and I haven't, which would you recommend for flowers, the White Nights 36 set or the Sennelier 24 Classic set? The person it's for is about 15-16.
I spend month before buying my artist grade set researching all the brands and pigments to not buy per exempel 5 Quinn magenta because the colores can have just diffrent names. On brushes and paper I find it much more difficult because I can´t buy a 80 dollar brush just to try if I like it. so I try cheap ones and when it feels good I research a high quility one and usually that one makes me extrem happy then.
I blu tak plastic pans to a flat ceramic plate for each painting, then put them away and pull out what is needed for the next one. Best of both worlds then.
You can turn off UA-cam recommendation. Plus I figured out that they only send you channels you interact with subscription or not. My subscription with bells ticked I rarely get notices for

I also think sheets are expensive but if you need to paint big they are the way to go🤷♀️ a roll though is economical, you get 10m of paper and obviously can paint on any size you want
They are less expensive per sqm, in comparison with the paper price of blocks, however, if you use one sheet per painting, then indeed, imperial sheets are quite costly :D Idea is that you buy big sheet and cut into smaller pieces instead of buying block of that smaller size.
