The dogs that have played Lassie(from the original TV series to now) have always been male. For the reason as posted above, males have better coats. As well as males are larger then females, so the boy characters(Timmy etc) can play alongside Lassie for many years without peope noticing them growing older. The dogs that played Lassie in the 2005 were Dakota(stunt dog, with more pricked up ears, and whitefactored) and Mason(the main dog who played in 85% of the movie).
And I might add that original Lassie in Eric Knight's book was tricolour (black white & tan) not sable. The actor dogs were males, because they have more hair and do not drop it twice in a year. Editing and point of wiev might have big effect. But dogs can be trained amazing tricks, too. How it is done? Answer: By positive reinforcement and skill to use it. I am a true Lasssie fan.
They are related to the Lassie Star in this movie! Not the original, which is Madison. The Pedigree says it all. And there is such a thing as lineage and ancestors genius. There are Collies out there related to the original Lassie.
They're related to this one, the one in the movie. I know that the one who played Lassie in the movie is not related to the original but there is one that is shown in the movie with the almost all white face, he is related to the original lassie. I even said the one in this movie. Spaze out why don't ya?
My German Shepherd scales any fence no problem. However it would be much easier for a Collie to climb a chain link fence since their smaller paws can grip the chain link.
@huskylover127 There is an actual lineage of Lassie that is still being carried on. I love the collie breed, and I am not saying this dog is Lassie or of that family.
@RachRabit , To actually account "Lassie" as the best movie ever,... Well, it lets us all know you seriously need to get outside at least once a year. Perhaps even speak with people who have lives. That comment was hilarious. Please tell us you were off your medicatons when you wrote that three years ago. Are you better now?
@DavidRyanM Excuse me! Dogs can certainly go over a fence like this... It did not have to be lying on the ground. Watch an agility competition sometime.
And this is why most kennels we have covered runs, because there will always be a dog like lassie, skilled enough to climb the chain link. Yes dogs actually do this, any breed can do this, they just need to have enough determination to go home. Dogs are not dumb, they formulate escape plans, they observe the workers to see who they can get past ect.
Yes they use male dogs to play the role of lassie, if u look closely when lassie climbs over the fence you can see its male genitals the camera was a little to close for that scene
@MrDavidson1970 I never said all of tbat I just said lessie would out smart any wire fance I went to a lessaie show while they were showing people just how smart this collie is
Incredibly underrated movie. Great story, great scenes, impeccable scenery and impeccable acting.
Don't forget male dogs also don't go into heat

Run Lassie Run! I LOVE this movie, and have it in my library of DVDs. Nice scenery, and very touching moments.
Pooor Lassie te movies are always soooo sad :(
As the owner of a Sheltie (looks very similar, but smaller) who is very clever and determined, I find this completely credible. Pretty dog.
I saw this movie last year on tv for the first time.... what a wonderful movie it is!!!!
