DIY Christmas Post Lantern with Dollar Tree Items (mostly)

  • Learn how I made this gorgeous Christmas post lantern using mostly Dollar Tree items. I did opt to use a board that I cut into the sizes I needed as well as a baluster (stair spindle). I did this for stability as I did not want the lantern to be top-heavy. The boards and spindle only added a couple of extra dollars to the total price of the lantern over what it would have been using all dollar tree products, and I don't have to worry about any broken glass if it were to fall over otherwise.

    I like that you made a tool with the end of a spatula. Great for folding over into hot glue. less burnt fingers.

      Give me time... I will still manage to burn my fingers! LOL

    Great project but camera scrunched up the view. Looks like it was set to wide screen. Just a little too close up. Amazing final piece though. TFS😁

      Yes, same here. I thought i messed something up on my phone's settings. I kept messing with it to make it full size to fit my screen. I'm glad to know it wasn't me. (just got a concussion in a MVA, though i wasn't remembering again).

      Thanks for watching. I know the camera was a bit wonky for this large of a project. I am redoing my space after the holidays and it will make for better filming.

    I would have to paint the skewers before adding to frame because I would make a mess.

    • @Salmonde_At_Home
      @Salmonde_At_Home  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching. The glass was out of the frame. I make a big enough mess without trying to paint around glass, plus the fact I am a major klutz and would have probably broken the glass. LOL

    Nice Work! One of the pros of using the hot glue is it fills in the gaps at the corners. I would however strongly recommend using CA or waterproof TiteBond glue first and the hot glue to hold it in place IF you plan on putting this outside in the elements.

    Very nicely done. I like the lantern on the spindle rather than tumbling tower blocks or something similar. It’s got its own personality.
    I’ve got a couple of little mailboxes from Valentine’s Day that I’d like to turn into a holiday decoration. A baluster would look great. Thanks for the idea.

    I appreciate you sharing your craft idea, with that said....it's difficult to watch how your making it because your screen shot is so narrow and the amount of ads is a bit much ! I have opted to become a new subbie to your channel because I like what you've shared, I do hope you'll use a better camera view for your next video

      Thanks so much. It was hard to make this with my current camera setup, but I am going to be redoing my craft room after Christmas so the angles should be better.

    Love this project.. Could you share the dimensions of the wood and spindle? Also size of screws. Very new to wood working and a little confused. Tfs.

    • @Salmonde_At_Home
      @Salmonde_At_Home  4 роки тому

      I believe the wood pieces were 2 8.5" and one was 9". The baluster was a 34" one that I cut down to the size I felt was appropriate for the piece. I didn't measure that, I just eyeballed it. As for the screws, they were wood screws and one was about 3" and one was about 2". I don't know anything about woodworking either, I just played it by ear. :-)

    What size were your boards cut to?

    • @Salmonde_At_Home
      @Salmonde_At_Home  4 роки тому +1

      The board were cut to about (2) 10 inches and (1) 9 inches. This can vary though on the outside dimensions of the frames you use for your lantern.

    The project was nice, however, the angle of ur camera made it very difficult to see and understand about 90% of the time,.

    • @Salmonde_At_Home

      I understand that. The camera angle was difficult for this project. I will be making some changes to my area the first of the year and that will make the larger projects far easier to film/watch. :-)

    You really need something with colour as your background. Watching the video is not good. Too much glare. Can't see what you are doing

    You have to understand that not all Dollar Tree Stores have these items. The one in my area is horribly stocked and does not carry half of what you use. So, it's not entirely fair to call the items "Dollar Tree Items". You keep saying "You can pick these up at the Dollar Tree"...well, maybe you can and maybe you can't. I would suggest you be careful telling people that they can get it there because they are all different. I am told that the stores don't order anything. They get what they get and what they carry is decided elsewhere so their stock is not consistent.
