  • Visit the Tijuana Estuary and, whether you know it or not, you're experiencing what it may have been like to stand on the beach in Southern California hundreds of years ago. This spot, where the Tijuana River meets the Pacific Ocean, is the largest and best example of the natural landscape that once was between Santa Barbara and some two hundred miles south of the border to San Quintín.

Among the many places where I was raised, Imperial Beach was the main one. Back in the late 1940s and early 1950s my friend and I were free-range kids - all of IB was our playground, including the estuary (what we called the sloughs) At that time there was a large black pipe that ran out through the slough. You can see the wooden structure that supported it still there. My friend and I used the pipe as a trail to explore the area.
In the early 1960s, my young wife and I setup our honeymoon camp on the south side of the Mouth (where the estuary connects to the ocean). Terns were everywhere on the sandy beach area near the ocean. We were very careful where we stepped to avoid damaging their nests. I'm glad the plans to build a marina there was stopped.
