Just made this adjustment to my seat back last week. I’m also noticing a benefit of having a better hook set than having it slightly reclined. Not to mention my back is happier 😊. Good advice!
Great advice, as always, Chad. I was gonna touch on one thing that I do to my seat, and you sorta touched on it, and that is the space under your seat base, that air space between it and it's tightening straps. I went online and bought "Kaizen Foam", about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch, and cut a piece that fills in that entire area. That helps get rid of any sagging that may occur and creates a solid contact between the pad and the straps. It really firms up the seat, and like you said, once it sags, the side bars start to push on your hips, creating discomfort. Same goes for the front frame bar behind your knees. Sitting up and not reclining, like you mentioned, also gives you better. Casting ability. Many times, I find myself scooting forward in the seat, away from the back, to make casts, and it helps make sure I'm in a better posture to make those casts. Do that for a while, then try casting while leaning back, and you'll immediately see the difference.
I have a cheap $400 Walmart Tamarack pro with a framed seat and wearing a old Cabelas anglers PFD. 9 hrs on the water I'm still comfortable. I can't imagine a Bonafide can feel like. I always have the back rest vertical. Thank you for the video
Chad, great video topic. Instead of the gardening cushion I used some 2 inch thick Polyethylene closed-cell foam that I got on Amazon for another project. It worked great and you can cut it into whatever size or shape you want. It comes in sheets that are 54” X 16” I either 1” or 2” thickness.
I love these videos. I have a big family so I’ve had to put fishing on the back burner and now I’m doing as much research as I can to not waist money. I’m 6,1 250 and I want the most comfortable seat I can make so I can relax and have more fun
The seat in my OldTown 120 Auto Pilot is the most comfortable seat I have, anywhere. I can set for 8 hours no problem, no extra cushion. It's more comfortable than any large padded chair on a fishing boat.
Very much enjoyed this video , I had already done some of the tips you mentioned previously , did some of the others you mentioned and they have made a world of difference . Thank you !
Good advice for anyone but one thing for comfortability is removing your wallet or keys from your back pocket to avoid lower back or leg problems down the road
Yeap, I did that a long time ago and not just while in the kayak. That’s something everyone should do even when driving or sitting in general. Thanks for the comment
I took my OT out for the first time a couple weeks ago and I was miserable.I have DDD and sciatica problems.I will try the lumbar pad and try again. Thanks Chad👍
Great video! I definitely need to add the kayak kushion but you are spot on with keeping the straps tight! My first several times out I would have my seat leaning back and was always in pain until I adjusted it to being more straight!
As always, your videos are so informative thanks for the valuable information, iv got metal plates and screws in my ankle and the piont you made about that knee angle when setting up your foot pedals makes so much sense, Thank you 😊
The RVR seat is the worst of all framed seats I’ve personally sat in. I was able to redo all the straps, they’re were laced from the factory in no particular order or fashion. It bearable now. I will be adding a pad of some sort under the seat as well. I’m only 175lbs, so it’s not like I’m really putting that much stress on the thing.
Great video Chad. i accidentally discovered the upright seat back relief on my ss107 fishing one day. it helped with the pain going down my legs. i'm definitely going to incorporate the other suggestions you covered here. thanks
Hey Chad. Great video w/ lots of good info. I see the Kayak Kushion is available in differend firmness. which do you recommend, the original or the firm. Like ourself, I'm a big guy. 6' 10" @ 285 lbs
I'll definitely be implementing some of these tips that I don't already use. Do you have any suggestions for tailbone pain? That's my biggest issue right now. I switched from a Kayak Kushion to a cushion with the cutout for tailbone relief. It has helped some but it is not meant for outdoor or marine use. LOL.
That’s a great question and one that I’ve never considered. I’m going to reach out to a buddy that is way more experienced and that area and see what his advice is.
Those boat seat pads “look” comfortable but I’ve found that they aren’t. The are thick but not that firm so they compress very easier (especially for big dudes) and you also kind of slide around on it
My uncomfortableness came from the seat not being tightened! NIGHT AND DAY! Difference from fishing 2 hours and being ready to get out and now im good for 4+
You misunderstood me..I've been yak fishing for 15 yrs..I got launching covered..I'm on a cane..I would like to know how to use my cane to enter and exit my yak without the use of a dock..I kinda drag my feet and I physically can't lift them high enough
The angle of you seat cuts off your circulation. You need to raise the angle of the back of your seat up. It makes a HUGE difference. Buy seat risers or put a yoga block underneath.
I have been nice of comfortable in the gravity seat of the feel free lure for 7 years . The sear is the reason I sold my Hobie years ago . i could not get comfortable in the seat .
How about the metal clips that dig into my hips, need to fix that area. I’ve been wrapping a small towel around both sides. I swear bonafide needs to make a wider kayak for wider customers.
@@ChadHooverFishing yea. I’m goina need more then 35”. My native titan 12.0 was good in the width department but man I love my ss127. Wish they made a 127 that’s 40” wide and had pedals.
I had The same issue with the metal slotted pieces that the straps hook thru. I placed about 3/4" spacers to move them out on both sides. One other issue on the seat is the alum. Rivets on high stress areas that after about 3 weeks completely imploded. The fix was to install SS bolts in these locations . I spend many days and hours in my yac and I'm a big guy so something just as simple as readjusting your seating while sitting back down puts a lot of pressure on these major spots. At minimum they should have used SS rivets. This seat takes a beating while moving around so brace it up where needed. It's ok for the guy who fishes every now and then . But I tend to move a lot and fish very aggressively with my equipment. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏
I would just add to be careful with having your seat back vertical. It will have the tendency to fall forward when you stand up. I keep my seat pretty vertical as well and I do a lot of standing while fishing. On more than one occasion I have went to sit down on to the backrest of my seat because it folded forward. I’ve had some close calls where I thought I was going overboard. 😂🤣
I wouldn't last two hours straight up like that. Lower back trouble makes that position highly uncomfortable. EVERYBODY is slightly different, so I think you should experiment with best position.
@ChadHooverFishing I've got one, and I can assure you that is not necessarily true. Sitting straight up is extremely uncomfortable in my truck, in a chair, or anything for any length of time longer than ten to fifteen minutes. I have to be at a slight recline. I regularly see a Doctor and go to pain mgt.
Having the seat lean back is better long term AND it provides more stability for the balance of you and the kayak. I fish 2-4 times a week for 6-8 hours at a time with no issues.
No it’s not. Feel free to share your opinion but having your seat leaned back is not better short term or long term and it’s definitely not more stable.
First, the definition of a boat is a small vessel propelled on water by oars, sails, or an engine. Most modern fishing kayaks are closer to boats than kayaks. So, aside from being wrong, don’t be rude. Second, it’s my channel and this how I share my content so I will call it whatever I please. Thanks fir watching and thanks for the comment. Maybe try the dictionary first next time. 😜
The seat straps being tight are crucial. This video is such a help!

Just wondering would a boat seat pad be good for a Nu Canoe seat?

Awesome video! Of subject, but do you plan on changing your primary fishing setup from a ss127 to a pwr129? Thanks!
I think I will be using the PWR 129 quite a bit, but I will still be using the SS127 for sure
Great video as always. One thing hobie got right was the seat everything he talks about can be done on the fly.
Yes they did.

What size is the foam pad ?
