  • On 13 March 1741, Maria Theresa gave birth to a long-awaited son and heir, who later became Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II. The birth was widely celebrated in the empire and had a great political significance amidst the War of the Austrian Succession, which began 5 months before, as Maria Theresa succeeded the throne.
    Episode 2
'Maria Theresia' tells the story of the teenager and young adult years of Maria Theresa of Austria, Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, one of the most famous Habsburg rulers and the only female one.

She supposedly said the only reason she didn't go into battle herself is because of her pregnancies and I believe her.

Dealing with the politics probably helped take her mind off the pain of childbirth. Concentrating on something other than the pain, it could work that way.

That's Sweet of Franz Stefan. He didn't care if they had a son as long as his Kaiserin is okay.

One could only imagine how different the world would have been if people knew that Men not Women determine whether a son is conceived or not. One would like to think that the world would have been Kinder to Womenkind as a whole, however, given things as they were Women might have been blamed for not arousing the right amount of desire to produce in Men the seed that creates Sons- or other such nonsense that blamed Women instead of putting Men on the hot seat as it were in terms of procreation. Just a passing thought.

To be able to discuss politics while in the midst of labor shows what a great monarch Maria Theresa was. Francis truly adored her that he prioritized her even when the long awaited heir was finally born. They so remind me of Victoria and Albert.

Quel dommage que déjà a cette époque ils aient tous oublié qu'il n'y aurait pas eu d'empire sans des femmes pour hériter...
