Those old boats.. There's a guy here locally who has made them into land based tiny houses, rents them out for the weekend. They have permanent plumbing and electrical, wrap around wood decks, and they are all placed among beautiful shade trees. It's a great second life for those old leaky boats with crap engines.

Talking about abandoned boats: In our neighbour town there is a yacht that just floats in the harbour, without engines. The owner is desperate to keep up appearances and pretends he still is well off, but his business is actually struggling. It is all show and tell, but nothing is real anymore. Expensive vacation with maxed out credit cards and little to eat the next month is the story there.

I used to clean boat bottoms and paint them when I was a kid. Boats in salt water that weren’t regularly maintained were a fun fest of sea grass and barnacles. I can tell you it’s hard work scraping by hand, especially wooden boats you do t want to damage the hull and your searching for rot. Yours has been in the water for a long time I’ll bet there is some growth on the bottom, and I’ll bet the paint isn’t economical as it used to be either.

Only because I am into boats and yachts and worked on super yachts, I sometimes laugh at David explaining things on the boat. Coming from the world of Benetti, Azimut, Bering, AvA, Alia, Feretti, Feadship, Baglietto, Ocean Alexander, Cheoy Lee, Monte Carlo and many more, it's refreshing to see someone not so immersed in yachting discover things for the first time and explain it all. You may not have bow thrusters, but you can have Volvo Penta IPS drives and with that you get a joystick that can function without using the thrusters. They also have yachts with a sky anchor system that will keep you in place while away from the helm. And the new Absolute yachts and some others have a dockwise feature that works just like the autopark features in a car.

@@andrewg2322 Hard to get Mercruisers on 37+ meter suoeryachts. Most yachts I have been on use MAN, MTU, John Deere, or Caterpillar engines. The smaller chase boats, the fishing boats or the pocket yachts are usually all Volvo Penta and we generally never had many issues with them. I've heard the stories though. Most of the yachts do the Med in summer, come back in the fall, come out for maintenance including repaint, soft goods repair and replace, respool the generators if needed, watermaker servicing, stove deep cleaning, engine service, tender maintenance then back in the water, hire a bunch of dockwalkers to clean the engine room, lazzarette, provision and teak work then back out into the Carribean for winter or stay in dry dock all winter and come out in spring and transition the Canal and go to Alaska in Nordhavn and Fleming heaven and stay there until summer then California and if the ship has range, Hawaii, Japan and Australia and pull out in Australia/New Zealand for repaint there. Some boats go over the polar circle and cut across back to the Atlantic.

Lol, I live in Avila Beach, California. The harbor has a boat hauler just like that one you mentioned. Only its salt water. The barnacles can get up to a foot thick on some boats. So when one of my friends calls and says " I'm hauling her out for bottom service this weekend come help." We all head to the harbor with pressure washers. Once that bottom is washed and scraped, sanded primered and painted.( which takes five people at least ten hours ) the marine coat goes on and back in the water she goes. Unless we're servicing the tanks or plumbing.

Great point about abandoned, unused boats. People need to work out the anticipated number of hours/days they realistically expect to use the boat for in a year, before they buy it. Divide the cost of the boat + maintenance by that number of hours and you can get a frighteningly big cost/hour. So... glad you use it and love it so much.

In my youth, I did bottom paint jobs on boats back in the late 90s. At that time there already were strict EPA and OSHA requirements for managing the debris from blasting or sanding off boat bottom paint in a marina, adjacent to the water. Special ($$$) blasting and sanding equipment was required to do the job. I can imagine the regs. for this work got even more strict in the last 20 years. The new paint, usually Interlux brand, was very expensive as well.

People don’t understand how much it costs and the work that goes into boat ownership, especially big boats. Its all fun and games in the summer but come winter and majority of the people that came and enjoyed your boat in the summer go MIA when the fun stops and work begins to put it to bed for the winter. Things like travel lift or crane fee, winter storage/dockage winterization of the engines and water systems, shrink wrapping/covering, etc. most of those items are paid for individually by the foot. So many people say the two best days of owning a boat are the day you buy and the day you sell it but I don’t agree. In my opinion the memories you gain are priceless. Point to all this is if your friend has a boat and you enjoy going on it help chip in a little. In the summers offer up some gas money, bring some snacks and refreshment with you, don’t bring anyone with out asking first, and take your damn shoes off before you get in. In the winter volunteer to help with winterization process and checking on it over the winter it goes a long way.

Instead of wet sanding, there are other options get a 5 gal pail, buy arm & hammer super washing soda, DRY TSP trisodium phosphate power, and simple green and a green 3M pad or 800 to 1200 grit wet sandpaper, mix proper amounts as required per gallon of water, then wash and scrub your gel coat down, this combination will even remove jet fuel and years of sun damage, rinse thoroughly, wipe down with acetone, then buy Penetrol® Oil-Based Paint Additive by Flood, it restores the polyester Gelcoat to a shine, it will haze up buff it out, then compound the boat with 3M™ Marine Compound and Finishing Material removes scratches, oxidation, stains, swirl marks and other blemishes that are robbing your boat of its beauty. this will restore the Gelcoat like new.

Friend of mine who owned a similar boat likened the experience to constantly standing under a shower tearing up £50 (or $50 in your case) notes 😂 - great fun but bottomless money pits, there is always something to fix and it all costs money

Saw some nice action at the harbor this saturday when one of the older wooden boats were about to dock after a trip out. Probably a semi large two cylinder diesel or potentially hot bulb engine. Not noisy at all but a nice funky low rev growel on it.

@@petesmitt this wasnt a screamin jimmy.. you could count the beats on idle… som of the old wooden boats in the harbor here is pre ww2, which makes it less likely to be a DD and more likely a locally produced engine.

I like those old Trojans flush decks 44 footers . With teak decks ,they have those mahogany’s doors that fold and separates the deck from the helm . I have a tayana 55 sailboat . It took me a month to sand it down to the fairing, then six coats of west systems then one coat of black hard paint then 2 coats of ablative. If you want to see the finest example of a Trojan I’ve ever seen. Go to a video called biggest boat graveyard in the Chesapeake. On a channel called Sv bohemian

Marine paint is hugely expensive, as is aviation paint. They have to withstand a while lot more than automotive paint does. I remember when we got new paint for my buddy's flat bottom fishing boat, it was $175/gallon. Salt water paint is way more.

You think thats a big travellift you should see the ones we had in the Navy. Ours could lift a 24' x 90' 70 ton causeway section, basically a very large pontoon platform. It is impressive to see these lifts move big things however they are extremely slow. We had an accident where a sailor lost a leg below the knee because he was walking ahead of a tire as a safety person, tripped and fell and tire runs over his leg. They don't stop on a dime as you can imagine. Well your boat looks nice, thanks for the update.
