Drums are the only instrument I know that sound completely different playing them than listening to them in the audience. I find the overtones and raw, unEQ'd sound uninspiring, almost intimidating. I used a set of earplugs that filtered out a lot of the frequencies every time I sat down to play. I'd tell people that I was protecting my hearing (true) but the real reason was to give me more of the great sound the audience was hearing- being able to hear the pitch roll off without all of the other tones- in a weird way it bolstered my confidence and I actually played better with them than without.
