I always thought it was cool that the Haas-Lola livery matched Carl Haas’ other team (Newman/Haas in CART, co-owned with Paul Newman and with Mario Andretti driving) for those two years.
Yep, '85 was an amazing year. Out of those two years, which would you prefer to see most? Keeping the nominations to just one year makes it easier for me.
3:54 Zakspeed West. I like this livery very much, even more than the McLaren Marlboro livery. The more ample red balances the white, and makes for a bold presence. The subsidiary sponsor logos are a little small, but well organized on the car, and all aligned horizontally for excellent clarity. The car looks best with the Shell logo on the side tub. The rich red tone, and subtle gold accent stripe and wheels make for a classy combination. Overall, the resulting livery is purposeful, uncluttered, sporty, and tasteful. While neither innovative nor intriguing, this livery deserves to be ranked higher (at least ahead of the Toleman at no. 14.) 6:03 Arrows Barclay. This livery is fun in a "1985" way. The beige colour reminds me of the colour of office equipment (e.g., type writers) from that time, while the colourful assortment of sponsors remind me of the stickers that manufacturers would apply to advertise the features of such equipment. 10:25 Ferrari. This is how a Ferrari livery should look: Ferrari red, accented by Fiat blue, and Agip yellow, with a numerous automotive parts-related sponsors. The heavy black massing of the rear spoiler and tires, offsets the red body, making it look avian light. The overall effect is aggressive, energetic, sporty, and timeless. 11:25. Alfa Romeo Bennetton. This is possibly my favourite of 1985, and at least a close second to the Renault in no. 1. The dominant green and red, separated by white stripe is a fortuitous nod to the Italian nationality of both Alfa and Bennetton. The yellow wheels add a splash of brightness. The angle of the Bennetton sponsor, the sponsors on the engine cowl, and the upward sweep of red emanating from the radiator output, are parallel to the angle of the nose cone, giving a sense of forward motion, without making the car seem unbalanced. 12:34 Williams Canon. Quite nice, but I think the subsequent versions of this livery were superior with the horizontal striping rather than the angled striping that puts the Mobil and Honda logos off kilter from the Canon and Tactel logos, and results in a thick white base that makes the rear end of this car seem massive and ungainly. 13:54 Lotus JPS. Perhaps this is heresy, but I have always disliked this livery. I'm not sure why, but maybe it looks too formal, ornate and delicate for my conception of a F1 livery. It's a classy wingtip dress shoe among trainers. Also, black liveries with gold pinstripes have low contrast against the track surface. I'm partial to bold graphics and bright colour combinations. 14:48 Renault. A worthy choice for no. 1. A very interesting design, that conveys a "French" fashion aesthetic.
An amazing grid of colorful liveries on the gird in '85 that truly due the decade justice. Really enjoy your videos. As for my personal ranking I have it as follows 1. JPS Lotus - the black and gold combination is as synonymous with Colin Chapman's outfit as British Racing Green and has seen many legends get behind the wheel and lead it to victory, with Ayrton Senna being the last to take it to victory lane if I am not mistaken. The colors, the championship wreaths, the lines, the way the sponsors integrate with the JPS brand colors. Automatic winner. 2. Marlboro McLaren - A racing icon of the the decade, the Marlboro McLaren partnership consistently produced instant classic racing cars with the day glow red and white chevron stripes and black Marlboro text. It is a livery that comes right to mind when thinking about open wheel racing (F1 or IndyCar) and for good reason. It is an absolute looker. 3. Canon Williams - Another classic of the F1 grid that lasted throughout the turbo era, Williams using the three primary colors of Blue, Yellow and Red along with white made them pop and stand out. Especially with Mansell's red number 5. Plus the way the sponsors were angled and flowed with the overall design of the chassis, it is art in motion. 4. BMW Brabham - Simplicity can sometimes be the best thing for a car. And the relatively simple design of the Brabham BMW livery works amazingly well when contrasted with the sharp angular designs of the Gordon Murray designed car. And while the loss of Parmalat from the livery is a bit of a demerit, the overall design is still the same and classic as ever for 1985. 5. Renault - the use of the Renault logo as a white and pinstripes section for the car along with the different colored digital clock numbers is absolutely stunning and really have an indistinguishable 80s vibe to it. Shame the engines kept blowing up though. Another great video man. Would love to see 1988 get done at some point and then maybe 2010 after that. Either way, keep up the awesome content.
1. Alfa Romeo. Whilst not my favourite chassis on the 185, the mostly red flat top sidepod is absolutely gorgeous, especially with the black wings and yellow wheels. 2. The Renault, number 16 of blue, all the good French colours. 3. Skoal Bandit RAM, Green bias and also how good they looked on a variety of cars 4. I haven't actually seen how good the Willams was up until this point, typical 80's diagonal sweep, love it 5.i think I'll gave to go for Brabham, they got the chassis lovely and smooth to bring out a shape that by itself isn't anything massively special
I played the automobilista 1 mod but thought of you and i wanted your view on it so i guess i got my wish thank you so much:) favorite driver is niki lauda tor this season
All great choices and rankings! Being a Benetton fan, I do agree that the country flags on the Toleman just didn't show up as desired. The classic green on the Alfa works much better and was definitely a precursor to what I feel are the coolest liveries ever in the late 80s/early 90s.
Im thinking about the 2004 - 2006 range, i would love to see msch' 04 vs renaults prime 05-06 in your opinion! Perhaps a step into the monocolour days before aero was important!
An intersting year you could rank worst to gurst could be 2007 or 2008 you can pick yourself since in my opinion the liveries for most cars did not change...
For me I'd have Williams as number 1 livery. They were lucky to have cool logos like Canon and Mobil and what they did with those logos and where they put them was perfect
It's nice & I'm probably a sucker for most blue cars, I took some points away for it mainly because none of of the other sponsors besides Kelemata were integrated very well imo.
Totally agree to Renault being top. Should be higher - Ferrari, Toleman, Brabham, Ligier. Should be lower - Haas (it is just like Spirit), Alfa, Minardi, Tyrrell . It is a golden year with so many teams.
I think Toleman shall be ahead of Alfa (Toleman scheme much more thoughtful), Ligier shall be ahead of Minardi (Minardi scheme is just scruffy), and Ferrari certainly shall be ahead of McLaren (I recalled M Walker, in live telecast of 85 San Marino GP, declared: ‘In my opinion the Ferrari is the most beautiful car in the grid’).
Happy to see Renault at #1. I kinda saw the RE60(?)’s livery as the last great livery that OG Renault had (the France based team not the Enstone crew that it would be known as Renault later on). Toleman’s was pretty eh and I don’t like ranking the tobacco sponsor liveries. RAM’s is pretty interesting (I don’t think we’ll see another nice-looking green and white livery, I know there was Jaguar but it wasn’t satisfactory) while Ferrari is (sorta biased) prettier than ever, Williams and Alfa Romeo look good as well and unfortunately I will agree the Brabham livery was getting old, it felt lacking with Parmalat absent
More than excellent video thanks but i would have put lotus renault jps at number one please keep the livery videos coming top man grazie tanto 🏎🏎🏎🏎🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Only thing I will disagree is Ferrari being 7th on the list and placing Mclaren in 4th personally both McLaren and Ferrari joint 3td after Renault and Lotus. That years Ferrari was a beauty and to have the late Michele Alboreto at the wheel of that Ferrari with his iconic blue and yellow lid just perfect!
Wheels, wheels, wheels.. you seem to ignore the wheels always. They are undeniably part of the visual impression of a car. And you missed a golden oppurtunity with alfa romeo here: yellow barrels with silver centres, silver barrels with gold & red centres, mismatched front and rear wheels(extremly rare in F1), changing colour combinations every race, and then yellow/gold barrels with red centres all round!! Love the series otherwise..
2020 has actually seen some pretty good liveries. The most surprising has to be the black Mercedes livery which gives a respectful nod to the Black Lives Matter movement.
I would love to see more of these, this is starting to become my favorite series!
Glad to hear! And I'm more than prepared to continue this series :-)
I always thought it was cool that the Haas-Lola livery matched Carl Haas’ other team (Newman/Haas in CART, co-owned with Paul Newman and with Mario Andretti driving) for those two years.

F1 Livery Histories i would prefer 2009, something more modern would be cool to see!

When azaz911c says he dislikes the lotus jps livery: *THIS IS NOT OKIE DOKIE*
Great liveries. I think 1974 has enough interesting liveries to warrant a video
Lots of teams to cover in that year too, although finding footage of them all will be difficult lol.
1985 Renault livery have been one of my personal favorites for long time.

If this dude ever comes back, it should be with a ‘70s worst to first.
1997 or 1999 those were very special I think the most beautiful liveries in general
Amazing as always!
Someday we would get 1989?
20 colorful teams
Would love to do 1989 one day

Nice list! And yes, Williams got that 80's diagonal sweep just right.
1996 to 1999 liveries I would love to see!
I never realised how good the 1985 liveries were! You should do 2010 next
With the spirit team looks like that's where the Manor from 2016 got it's inspiration from. Great video as always 👍
Yeah I noticed that too! Though tbh the Penske F1 team from the 1970s had that look before all of them. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Nice to see you finally put out another one of these, great stuff mate
Cheers Bill. Definitely appreciate it.

Indeed. So 80's!!

please do 2009!
A good year.
#16 for the Osella though?! Love that simple, sky blue livery
It's nice & I'm probably a sucker for most blue cars, I took some points away for it mainly because none of of the other sponsors besides Kelemata were integrated very well imo.

Toleman is nice, but from a distance it doesn't look very good imo. Maybe it's the grainy footage tbh.

4.05! haha The team boss smacks Jonathan Palmer on the helmet twice when he pulls in!
I wonder what he had just done?!
It looks like he was congratulating him for something I do believe. Seems very happy with him.

Nice one again. By the way. Have you forgotten to put my channel/video's in the end screen?
I'll be sure to help you out in the next one!

That's a good call. I love the 85 Ferrari as well.
I think the worst liveries from this era are 100 times better then any modern livery for the last 10 years.
Helmets and liveries are really bad nowadays, too many elements and not memorable
Worst to first 1978 liveries
Yes give me more 😫

The papaya orange and blue of McLaren was, in my opinion, the best looking.
👍👍👊
the skoal ram is just ugly, zakspeed was much more beautiful by far
