My God, how I cried over this movie. I went to bed after watching it as a kid and sobbed hysterically for hours. That was about 50 years ago, and I remember vividly.
Claude Jarman Jr seems to be such a lovely man. What was the interviewer talking about when he said Gregory Peck always appeared to be cold? He was a sweetheart in The Yearling and most other films I've seen him in.
I believe Sir Laurence Olivier in Henry V was what Claude was trying to remember who was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 1947 Academy Awards.
As a kid in 80s I would always watch this movie when I visited my Grandparents. As a Florida native this movie has a special place in my heart for several reasons.
It's funny, because my grandson was with us a lot, and that movie was a requirement at my house. I think all the younger people need to see these wonderful movies !!
I have always wondered If Claude, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey did their own unbelievable horse riding in that excellent John Wayne movie, "Rio Grande"? I can watch those riding scenes over and over and marvel at how it was done, and the skill Claude showed. I expected it from Ben Johnson and Harry Carey, but was totally amazed at Claude's riding skills. Bravo, Claude. Thanks for this Rob, great interview, with a classy guy..
Well, what was said from the other actors in Rio Grande, was that all those other actors had practiced for weeks, and Claude came on, and did a 10 minute practice, which is absolutely incredible! What an adult gentleman. I am a total fan of his, and he was such a natural young actor, just loved him, along with many other people. I am so glad that Gregory Peck did it instead of Spenser Tracy. Never cared for him in the first place, but, my opinion is,that this was not his kind of film, anyway. Loved Foderwing, and having Chill Wills was a bonus. I would like to hear him talk about Chill Wills, and the others that played in that movie. BRAVO
Absolutely !!! But, I wanted to hear Claude talk about the relationship with the dear !!! Does he ever talk about that? I so enjoyed listening to him in this interview. Thank you !!!
Very nice interview. Good questions, you allowed him to talk, unlike so many who prefer the sound of their own voice. Claude seems like a sweetheart for sure
Thanks, T. I WANT to hear their stories, too. More with Claude in May for our annual John Wayne episodes. He's got some very funny RIO GRANDE memories.
With the sad passing of Jon Whiteley (may he rest in peace) earlier this year, Claude Jarman Jr. is one of only 3 living Juvenile Academy Award winners. Mr. Jarman was one of the youngest actors ever to win the Academy Award, he is an exceptional actor. I wrote to Mr. Jarman many years ago and sent him a photo with him and other child actors in it from the '40s. He liked the picture so much that he enlarged it and sent me a copy of it because he never saw it before. Such a great guy (and so was Jon Whiteley who I contacted in care of my grandmother who was a big fan of his film).
As a kid in the 50's I recall this movie and Old Yeller very well. They played them on a Saturday matinee at the old Strand Theater in Wadsworth Ohio in like 1961 or 62 for kids. That was a fun time they even had live magic shows for kids between movies at the Strand. My family was from Virginia and we moved to Ohio in 1952 so my Dad could work at Ford motors and I left the area in the 70's. I was told the old Stand theater is a license plate office now.
Like a Newberry Award winning book, this film is new every time a kid sees it for the first time. I think the book did win a Newberry if I'm not mistaken. I saw it in SF at age 6 & have never seen it again. I'm waiting to catch it on Moviestvnetwork. I also loved Gregory Peck from that film and Gentlemen's Agreement (with Dean Stockwell) and much later in To Kill a Mockingbird. with another lovely child actress who didn't do any other films.
I'm 68 and when Claude mentioned the double feature on saturday brought back the fond memories of where I was on most saturdays. Wonderful interview. Claude is very sharp and full of great stories.
Boy you brought back lots of memories growing up as a kid in Florida. It was wide open then. Always running around in the sandy lots fighting bugs and finding snakes and other wildlife.
I named my son Jody after the book..what's funny at this same age as Jody in the book.my Jody found a baby deer. We raised her and she had twin bucks . I have amazing stories I need to write into a book
Rob= 5 stars for that one,....that was one of my late Mom's favorite movies,...she watched that one every time it was televised (on/TCM),...Claude still has that boyish grin too,...he did sprout up, I remember (Fort Apache?) he was a hell of a horseback rider at well over 6'-4"/tall...."The Yearling" is a must see treasure for every kid to see = young and old.
wonderful and interesting interview. Never saw the yearling, another one for my must see list. Gregory Peck : the first word that describe him for me through most of his roles is virtuous.
Such a great film and Claude's performance in it certainly ranks among the best, arguably maybe *the* best by any child actor ever on film. He was also in another classic John Wayne John Ford production, Rio Grande, and did his own riding in a spectacular stunt of horsemanship in a scene where he, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey jr. each rode two horses simultaniously standing upright on their backs galloping and jumping full tilt "in the style of the ancient Romans" that I'm sure no Roman was ever foolhardy enough to try. A totally fearless exhibition of reckless horsemanship that likely woulda given the likes of Audie Murphy pause.
Wonderful interview despite the COVID restrictions. Great to honor and value those who have enriched our lives through entertainment. And in our often negative news times, it is a breath of fresh air to watch your interviews!
My favorite of his movies, and one of my all-time favorites is Rio Grande! I thought he did a wonderful job in that! You almost forget you are watching a movie.
Dear lord Rob Word of Word on Westerns thanks for this video i remember peck in the gunfigther and I walk the line great movies and of course the big country great video this one happy New year stay safe and strong from tom your friend always
What a surprise Rob, this was truly a great interview. Could have listened for hours your interview with Claude. I remember seeing the Yearling when I was young. The last thing I remember seeing Claude in was Rio Grande where he played John Wayne’s ( Kirby York ) son along with Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. That in itself was a great movie for so many reasons. Thanks again from Down Under 😎😎🐝
Another great interview, Rob. Enjoyed listening to Claude's recollections of one of my favorite movies. I am glad he had such good interactions with Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman, sometimes stars don't live up to their billings in real life.
Like millions of families around the world my family would ALWAYS gather to watch this film when it was on one of the 3 to 5 channels available back in the late 60's to early 70's. What a wonderful interview and a real treat to see Mr. Jarman looking so well and to hear of his experiences. I have to add that of ALL the channels I've subscribed to A Word on Westerns has become my absolute favorite. Thanks again Rob and team.
Wyman's coldness in the film can be found in the book. She had lost several children to disease and accidents, and was determined not to get too close to Jody for fear of having her heart broken again. Plus, life on a Florida homestead in the 1800's was a singularly brutal existence.
This one of my family's favorite Gregory Peck movies, we quote from it almost as much as from To Kill A Mockingbird. There was chemistry between the young child actor and Peck. That crying scene after he had to put down his pet deer and grew up. So glad to hear Claude's stories from the set. He still looks like Jodi, glad Dr. Oz finally got around to do this interview. 😁
Lovely video, so great to hear Claude Jarman Jr's experiences and particularly about Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman. A movie that I haven't seen in a long time but I must revisit. Thank you!
The Yearling is one of those timeless movies that transcend the time they were made. Claude Jarman Jr made an unforgettable impression as Jody. I didn't realize that he went on to do other films. Great that your able to produce new material. I'm sure there will be a part two on other films he was part of. Happy New Year looking forward to what you will bring to your viewers in 2021.
Right. Ever fresh. Only the quality of the print makes one realize how old it is. He is such a likable person, which must owe a lot to his own family. Peck obviously warmed to him as he did to Audry Hepburn. Ditto to the child actors in “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
I'll have to admit I've never seen 'The Yearling' and wasn't familiar with the work of Claude Jarman Jr., nevertheless this was a really interesting interview! Thanks Rob, now I'll have to watch the movie!
Glad you enjoyed it, John. I bought it AFTER our interview! Your timing is good because I’ve put together more of my conversation with Claude recalling his role with Randolph Scott in HANGMAN’S KNOT for tomorrow’s AWOW episode.
Great interview Rob! I haven't seen The Yearling for many years, I will be watching it again soon now!! I was born in 1949 buy I remember seeing the film when I was very young. I think it had an impact on everyone who has watched it over the decades.
Wow, this was and is one of the best ever. Funny where life takes you. For the last 24 years I have lived just outside Deland, Florida. When I moved here I got a reserved box seat to watch Stetson play baseball. I met a lot of nice people that were connected with that wonderful school. A few years ago it got a bit hard for me to park and walk to the entrance of the ballpark. So I gave up my seat.
Mostly I remember him from Rio Grande as John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara’s son. Wow, the picture of Shirley Temple standing next to him holding their Oscars, must have been a lifelong memory for him.
More stories from Claude coming up during our annual month of May...A WORD ON WAYNE segments. Claude will be talking about RIO GRANDE and the Roman style riding!
WOW! What an interesting interview Rob. I remember Claude from many movies growing up but at the time I forgot or did not keep track of his name. Loved watching this youtube video. As always, keep'em coming.
Thanks, Rob, for this wonderful interview. I am a huge Peck fan, and I also always admired Claude, not so much in his first film The Yearling, but more so in his later films, especially Rio Grande. This episode is a great way to end the year. Many thanks, and you and your family and friends please stay safe and be well! Happy and Healthy New Year 2021!
