Hope you will be releasing more technical deep dives like this. I have a shoegaze band myself and spend a lot of time researching effects. Got this one recommended by UA-cam and will be subscribing now!

if you've got any requests i'd consider it. this was certainly the effect that had the most misinformation surrounding it which is why i chose it.

This is awesome, I use a a early reflections by jma and sometimes use the ehx canyon which can do the same thing the memory man does!

Great video! Did you run the blues driver after the memory man? I'm suprised how close the memory man gets to nailing the sound.

Yup! At 5:24 I provided a photo of the layout. The memory man really can get close if you know what you're looking for!

Great video man! Ive been looking into getting a Yamaha Rack unit for a quite a while now, and man the reverse reverb patch on the one your using sounds great. The only reason i haven't got one yet is because i've never used a rack unit before and wasn't sure how hard it was to run it through a pedal chain. Have you had any problems with yours when it comes to that?

      There are two main issues:
      - The bypass is crap.
      - There is a noticeable volume drop.
To solve these, getting an fx loop pedal like a Boss LS-2 should work. Really any shoegazer should have one anyway as they allow multiple pedals (e.g. Fuzz, EQ, and a Memory Man) to be switched on at once.

I think the pedals sounded a little more washy and pad-like, the repeats on the SPX sounded a little more sharp.

I think it's far easier to just use a plugin.

Easier in what sense? When playing at home, using the real thing is easier as I don't have to boot a laptop and can adjust settings without having to move from my setup; also allowing for use with a pedalboard via a Yamaha FC-5 footswitch or a Boss LS-2. When playing live, using the real thing is easier as I don't have to lug a laptop to the gig. Additionally, the cost of the plugins you would need to replicate all the quality effects this thing offers would be far greater than what I paid for it.

@@microphonier Playing live, sure, you need a pedalboard. Recording, it's way easier to get reverse reverb with plugins.
You can also achieve real reverse reverb when recording, and without any pedals. Add reverb to a track, then play it backwards. That's real reverse reverb. The Yamaha and Alesis racks MBV used sound great, but it not the real deal. I don't know how that would work in real time, or live.
Plugins are way cheaper than pedals, and the vast majority of time you can try a plugin using a free trial. Some of favorite plugins are free, or simply included with logic. There are some effects, guitar tones, that just don't generally sound as good via a plugin, as opposed to a pedal, however. reverb is not one of these effects. There are a gazillion reverb plugins. Many of them sound pretty amazing.

@@trailingupwards I'm fully aware, as I explain in the video, that this isn't standard reverse reverb (and trust me, I dislike the name as much as you clearly do). That being said, this effect and true reverse reverb have very different use cases and the latter isn't ideal in this scenario which is why I have this unit. I would be impressed if you could point me towards a plugin that replicates this effect.
