This looks nice but I don't understand why these handhelds are never horizontally oriented like the GBA. The main system I care about is the SNES and you really want shoulder buttons for that.
the freeplay zero has a GBA board in one piece, but the GBA screen is beyond tiny, I like this form factor a lot, but also would like shoulder buttons, they could've added them at the back or something... It has an add on with more buttons, we'll see in the next video!
haroldjenkinsiii I definitely agree, this is cute and nostalgic, but the best form factor, more versatile and comfortable, is horizontal as in GBA, NeoGeo Pocket, Canoo, PSP, VITA, etc. Besides that it would make possible up to four shoulder buttons and two analog sticks, also this would allow to use it in the best way for shmups or pinballs when rotating it as in the WonderSwan and PSVita. That would be the perfect handheld!
I received my Game Shell last week and I have had some time to tool around with it. I have had the help of the Clockwork forum and the RetroArch mega thread, but I have always preferred your videos for helping me to set up my different retro devices. I find it much easier to have a video tutorial to follow along with and your tutorials are always great. I would love to see videos for installing a genesis core, a gameboy/gameboy color core, TG-16 core, Neo-Geo Core, and a SNES core.
I went with the RetroStone after you put that video up. Honestly, I want both that and this one. Hahaha. Hopefully I am just as satisfied with the Retrostone
By the way. Over on the clockwork forum they just got Pico-8 the fantasy console running on the gameshell. ETA you should totally do a video showing off Pico-8. It fits this device so well and there are so many games!
Definitely Celeste! But whats great about PICO-8 is that they have a featured games menu, so you can look through all of the top games for the system, right on the main menu!
I like this form factor a lot, but also would like shoulder buttons, they could've added them at the back or something... It has an addon with more buttons, we'll see in the next video! Also the modular style it's billiant, they could even release another face plate and PCB to add more buttons on the front, but 4 are a-okay to me.
I can confirm they all run really well. I've played a lot of difficult GB/GBC roms and on SNES I've played Earthbound and Megaman X without any problems.
I bought an odroid go based on your recommendation and loved it so I'm pretty excited for this to go on sale. I have to make sure I follow you on Twitter...
It would be much better with: 1-shoulder buttons 2-two analog sticks, small ones like the ones on the psp or ps vita 3-also it's so bluky and it has so much plastic, and I'm sure they can make it much thinner 4-these two screws on the side are easy to use but making it much much bulkier for me I still prefer a GBA SP with a flash cart, or a psp go with tons of emulators and awesome psp/ps1 games. still an awesome device. keep the great videos coming :)
I would love one of these with a Neo Geo Pocket Color style stick instead of the D-pad. I know it'd be a bit harder to do but it's so much more satisfying and clicky.
Hello ETA PRIME, thanks as always for such quality content. I've bought a Gameshell thanks to you and is becoming one of my favorite handheld ever. I'm having difficulties with the stock GBA emulator, (MGBA) and I'll gladly watch a video tutorial where you explain how to install different kind of emulators. My dream is to be able to play Final Fantasy VI Advance without that awful sound glitch. Keep up the good work!
Wow there are so many cool linux handhelds that have came out recently, hard for me to pick between this and the rs97 since the linux firmware cameout! How much is this going to cost when it is fully out?
Just ordered in red proletarian color )) Shipment starts in January, so I continue to drink vodka with my bear and listen to my wife playing balalayka till then. Thanks for great review that allowed not to miss the thing.
I held off on getting one of these during the Indiegogo because of the battery life. And as cool as it is battery life average on the forums is 1.5 hours. Obviously you can use a different battery but Ive yet to see someone do it where it will fit nicely.
It would be nice if someone designed a replacement case with the speaker section on the top. Seems like the bottom mounted design would cause sound to get muffled by your hands.
I'm wondering just how strong those ears are on the side for the dial clasps. Seems like if you opened an closed it too much, they would either loosen quite a bit, or the tabs would break off. Certainly better than just finger-groove snaps, but I'm thinking that is one area that could be designed a little better.
Hello there! Of all the portable emulation devices you tested, like the Gameshell, Gaboze Pocayo, Game Boy Zero, Bit Boy, Odroid Go and many others with single board computers (I don't Android devices), which would you say has the BEST quality screen? Thank you in advance.
I been waiting you review this, I love the design and modular option that clockwork show it at their campaign, and the UI remind me of old iPod UI simple and easy to use, probably the only downside is there no L or R button but you say there 5 more button add on. Man I cannot wait for next video also for that add in please test if this can handle PS1.
I would love to see some PS1 and N64 on this unit to see how it stacks up against RPi3 in terms of performance. I just got the shield TV and I am loving it for retrogaming so far.
Does this currently have a way to run SNES & GBA games? (Assuming you add the extra buttons on back) I’m loving the way this thing looks and the quality, will be on the lookout when its not sold out.
Gary Stinten because then you suddenly have two devices. I waant to have one device with everything I need on the go. A slide out keyboard in addition to the buttons would be amazing.
This looks nice but I don't understand why these handhelds are never horizontally oriented like the GBA. The main system I care about is the SNES and you really want shoulder buttons for that.
haroldjenkinsiii I'm going to go with cost. Its cheaper to do one PCB with all your buttons on one board, as opposed to two PCBs .
the freeplay zero has a GBA board in one piece, but the GBA screen is beyond tiny, I like this form factor a lot, but also would like shoulder buttons, they could've added them at the back or something... It has an add on with more buttons, we'll see in the next video!
Pacoroto have u heard of pigrrl 2? Idk if it's any good tho...
haroldjenkinsiii I definitely agree, this is cute and nostalgic, but the best form factor, more versatile and comfortable, is horizontal as in GBA, NeoGeo Pocket, Canoo, PSP, VITA, etc. Besides that it would make possible up to four shoulder buttons and two analog sticks, also this would allow to use it in the best way for shmups or pinballs when rotating it as in the WonderSwan and PSVita. That would be the perfect handheld!
Pacoroto you CAN add the shoulder buttons to the back, I backed a version with the extra back buttons. Its so cool
I'm literally blown away by this set up..... Whoever made this thing is a genius.
What an awesome idea! The possibilities with it being modular are almost limitless! I love my Odroid Go! but this is on a different level 😃
That thing is beautiful and sleek. I remember having to make custom large pockets for my lynx.
I don’t need it...
I don’t need it...
I don’t need it...
I NNNNEEEED IIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!1!!
This is absolutely fantastic 😍 definitely going to be getting one when they go on sale!
Best voice ever, dont quit this ! loved every video ! this looks like a great device. and greetings from the Netherlands.
Joost Wasbauer Hoi, jongen
Wow, I really want one of these now! Love the clean look of the Clockwork OS. I'll definitely grab one when they get them in-stock!
I went with the RetroStone after you put that video up. Honestly, I want both that and this one. Hahaha. Hopefully I am just as satisfied with the Retrostone
Great concept in the correct direction.
SO GLAD I backed this. Oh my god so cool.
By the way. Over on the clockwork forum they just got Pico-8 the fantasy console running on the gameshell. ETA you should totally do a video showing off Pico-8. It fits this device so well and there are so many games!
I will definitely take a look. Do you have Any good games to recommend? I haven’t messed with pico 8 much at all
Celeste, Get Out, Little Dragon Adventure and Mystic Realm Dizzy are good places to start.
Definitely Celeste! But whats great about PICO-8 is that they have a featured games menu, so you can look through all of the top games for the system, right on the main menu!
Man... the green back looks amazing... I hope I can buy more color combinations before too long.
Already released a new pcb with more ram love that you dont need a whole new unit everytime it upgrades its brilliant
This looks amazing, definitely getting one when they're widely available
This is a perfect little machine. I've been looking for something like this for so long. I really hope to get my hands on one
ETA... Kick It With The Fam.. We'll Be Here.
Really nice looking kit. The modular design is superb, being able to switch out the mainboard for more capability down the line could be very nice.
This is so cool! I love your channel and videos!
This looks freaking awesome. Finally a more flushed out aio build that comes with everything.
How long does the battery last?
I’ve been waiting for you to review this for the longest. Missed their indie campaign, so I’ll have to buy one outright.
AWESOME, I would like to see gb/gbc and snes games running this device.
I can confirm they all run really well. I've played a lot of difficult GB/GBC roms and on SNES I've played Earthbound and Megaman X without any problems.
@@disruptityourself do you have screen tearing?
Great video. I 'ok definitely be looking out for this console.
Tetris (GB) Love the Channel!
I definitely want one of these. Very awesome video as always. :)
What a gorgeous little machine!
Option to add more buttons, every part in his own mini case and come with cave story and a clean interface. I have to get one of this, it's beautiful
They were on Kickstarter... I have one as well... I love the simplistic os menu and the limited color palette...
LOL I always get indiegogo mixed up, backed so much junk on both. LOL
I bought an odroid go based on your recommendation and loved it so I'm pretty excited for this to go on sale. I have to make sure I follow you on Twitter...
This would be perfect if it had shoulder buttons and a mini HDMI. This is still really cool though, the possibilities seem endless on this thing.
This is a really fantastic device. And i need one.
5:30 - I was worried it wasn't color for a little bit. Phew!
Daaaang. Metal Slug looked good on this screen.
what a design, i think they made it with love :)
i just order mine, i cant wait
Man that thing looks super clean! We need this! My daughter just said she's flipping out right now! Lol!
that is very cool. Looking forward to seeing what other systems it can handle.
I never enter giveaways.. but i'm making an exception for this.. HOW DID I MISS THIS KICKSTARTER?!
It was on Indiegogo, so that might have had something to do with it. ;-)
Same here
That's pretty awesome. I'm going to have to get my hands on one of those. I'd love to see what it can do.
Curious about how the R and L button for the SNES would function...
SO underrated channel! You deserve fame!
oh my god. that's a very beautiful piece of tech
my only reservation would be comfort - the buttons seem a bit wobbly. Everything else seems perfect. Definitely bookmarking this one.
After 4 years of waiting to buy one, I FINALLY bought one. It's finally shipped after waiting nearly 4 months for shipping to start. 😭
It would be much better with:
1-shoulder buttons
2-two analog sticks, small ones like the ones on the psp or ps vita
3-also it's so bluky and it has so much plastic, and I'm sure they can make it much thinner
4-these two screws on the side are easy to use but making it much much bulkier
for me I still prefer a GBA SP with a flash cart, or a psp go with tons of emulators and awesome psp/ps1 games.
still an awesome device.
keep the great videos coming :)
As you said it's looking like the best gameheld console. Nice minimal menu, bright screen, clear sound. What else do we want?
This thing looks amazing!
I love this, I would like to see Supermodel running the Star Wars Trilogy on this, It probably will never happen but I can dream
If the develop the edition with HDMI-out, it will be a real winner!!!
thank you for this video! Never heard of this thing but it looks amazing and as soon as its available I sure will get one. :)
It looks beautiful
Yeah. For me it looks like a Original gameboy but with a xbox one s style or something like that
I would love one of these with a Neo Geo Pocket Color style stick instead of the D-pad. I know it'd be a bit harder to do but it's so much more satisfying and clicky.
That is quite a piece of retro happiness!
That's a nice looking product. The website is pretty well done as well.
Enorme, tres bonne vidéo 😉.
A really cool game console, I am definitely interested in getting one ☝️ Great review man 👍
Definitely want to see some SNES games played on this!
I wish I knew this thing sooner.. I am hoping it will be available in future.
Id love to see some vids on getting more indie games on this thing
Wow this looks lovely
That look awesome! I have to try get my hands on one. Especially now since Retrostone turned out to be such a disappointment...
Looks awesome I'd love to get one
That's awesome. Great review.

Keep up the good work!
Hey! How much did you buy it for? Thanks!
I'm really wanting one of these... I was considering RasPi boy or RetroStone too... but those prices though... ugh...
Very Nice! Is there a way to add a video out cable?
I unfortunately missed out on backing it, so I am excited for you to give away some. Hopefully I can actually win!
Wow there are so many cool linux handhelds that have came out recently, hard for me to pick between this and the rs97 since the linux firmware cameout! How much is this going to cost when it is fully out?
That is super awesome I'm super jealous.
Looks good, I did notice some screen tearing though.
When playing Adventure Island, was that screen tearing actually on the device or just a result of the recording device?
Just ordered in red proletarian color )) Shipment starts in January, so I continue to drink vodka with my bear and listen to my wife playing balalayka till then. Thanks for great review that allowed not to miss the thing.
assemble the trigger buttons on camera for us please? this looks so freaking awesome!
it looks very good. the only thing i dont like about is how the cases is hold together
Wow, this looks slick!
I held off on getting one of these during the Indiegogo because of the battery life. And as cool as it is battery life average on the forums is 1.5 hours. Obviously you can use a different battery but Ive yet to see someone do it where it will fit nicely.

how did you add the games? (Adventure island 1, 2, and 3 etc) I have one coming, but have not figured out how to load my roms onto it.
My biggest issue with this is the tiny screen size. I hope they come out with another version with a bigger screen.
Will there ever be available to buy again? I missed the Kickstarter and I really want one :(
hey bro, your camera looks incredible, do you mind sharing the model?
I would love to see Hatari running on this thing for Atari ST games like Rick Dangerous or Escape from Robot planet Monsters.
Thanks for the information on this, I just visited the site, & look forward to being contacted for one
Subbed maybe do a time lapse video to see how long the battery lasts
Hello there! Of all the portable emulation devices you tested, like the Gameshell, Gaboze Pocayo, Game Boy Zero, Bit Boy, Odroid Go and many others with single board computers (I don't Android devices), which would you say has the BEST quality screen? Thank you in advance.
I would like to see the installation of more stand alone games like Cave Story and FreeDOOM. What other newer game can be installed on this?
Great videos ETA, would you happen to know where I can buy a game shell. Thanx
Bhirawa Maylana it should be able to handle ps1 since the CPU has neon.
Does it support NeoGeo Pocket Color? Still trying to find a good emulation machine to play Biomotor Unitron on the go that is fairly small..
I would love to see some PS1 and N64 on this unit to see how it stacks up against RPi3 in terms of performance.
I just got the shield TV and I am loving it for retrogaming so far.
Got one of em they are just great
As long as this can handle some of the CPS3 games (SFIII:3rd Strike) in FBA, then I’m sold.
Does this currently have a way to run SNES & GBA games? (Assuming you add the extra buttons on back)
I’m loving the way this thing looks and the quality, will be on the lookout when its not sold out.
Idea: Make a keyboard module and front shell. If I could swap between them it would be amazing
Kristoffer Johnsen why not Bluetooth keyboard..
Gary Stinten because then you suddenly have two devices. I waant to have one device with everything I need on the go. A slide out keyboard in addition to the buttons would be amazing.
The GameShell is looking really interesting.
Waiting for the Gameshell Hack Videos ! I've just received mine!
Croud funding success story....
Unheard of.
Looks like a fun little build/handheld.
How do you sign up for the give away? I was about to build a PiGRRL Zero but I think I may go this route!
