LYRICS NEEDED: any help is really welcome Album - Goodnight Irene 1949-1953 [Disc 2] Track 17 of 30 Comment and vote, folks!Lyrics will be added on Video too:
On top of old Smokey All covered with snow I lost my true lover For courtin' so slow For courting's a pleasure (for courting's a pleasure) But parting is grief (but parting is grief) And the false hearted lover (and the false hearted lover) Is worse than a thief (is worse than a thief) A thief will just rob you (a thief will just rob you) And take what you have (and take what you have) But a false hearted lover (but a false hearted lover) Will lead you to the grave (will lead you to the grave) And the grave will decay you (and the grave will decay you) Turn you to dust (and turn you to dust) Not one boy in a hundred (not one boy in a hundred) A poor girl can trust (a poor girl can trust) They'll hug you and kiss you (they'll hug you and kiss you) Tell you more lies (and tell you more lies) Than cross ties on a railroad (than cross ties on a railroad) Or the stars in the sky (or stars in the sky) So come all you young maidens (come all you young maidens) And listen to me (and listen to me) Never place your affection (never place your affection) On a green willow tree (on a green willow tree) For the leaves they will wither (the leaves they will wither) And roots they will die (the roots they will die) You'll all be forsaken (you'll all be forsaken) And never know why (and never know why)
I only knew the meatball version, until I came across the original words sung by - of all people - ABBA! Unfortunately they only do about 1½ verses, as it's the middle of a medley (starting with "Pick a bale of cotton"), as the B side to one of their singles (Summer Night City, I think). I wish they'd done more, as I liked their arrangement, and of course do lovely harmonies. ua-cam.com/video/V5__bvSyXN4/v-deo.html
On top of old smokey All covered with snow I lost my true lover From courting too slow For courting's a pleasure And parting's a grief And a false hearted lover Is worse than a thief For a thief will just rob you And take all you save But a false hearted lover Will lead you to the grave And the grave will decay You and turn you to dust Not one girl in fifty A poor boy can trust They'll hug you and kiss you And tell you more lies Than cross lines on a railroad Or stars in the skies So come all your maidens And listen to me Never place your affections On a green willow tree For the leaves they will wither And the roots they will die You'll all be forsaken And never know why
Not only is English not everyone's 1st language but also some people are hard of hearing and can't discern all the words. Sorry, but hearing folks seem to forget they're not the only ones in the world who enjoy music who like to understand all the lyrics of a song.
I'll always remember hearing this on the radio back in the '50's. No one can sing this song like they did.
My local radio station WCRS 1450 AM played it this morning!
@John Meegan they played this version in Memphis? When they played it?
I remember this from I was just a little tot!
My mom used to sing this song to me when I was little. I miss her.
Its an amazing song
Where are you watching from?
Mother mother used to do the same. 😀
On top of old Smokey
All covered with snow
I lost my true lover
For courtin' so slow
For courting's a pleasure (for courting's a pleasure)
But parting is grief (but parting is grief)
And the false hearted lover (and the false hearted lover)
Is worse than a thief (is worse than a thief)
A thief will just rob you (a thief will just rob you)
And take what you have (and take what you have)
But a false hearted lover (but a false hearted lover)
Will lead you to the grave (will lead you to the grave)
And the grave will decay you (and the grave will decay you)
Turn you to dust (and turn you to dust)
Not one boy in a hundred (not one boy in a hundred)
A poor girl can trust (a poor girl can trust)
They'll hug you and kiss you (they'll hug you and kiss you)
Tell you more lies (and tell you more lies)
Than cross ties on a railroad (than cross ties on a railroad)
Or the stars in the sky (or stars in the sky)
So come all you young maidens (come all you young maidens)
And listen to me (and listen to me)
Never place your affection (never place your affection)
On a green willow tree (on a green willow tree)
For the leaves they will wither (the leaves they will wither)
And roots they will die (the roots they will die)
You'll all be forsaken (you'll all be forsaken)
And never know why (and never know why)

lyrics needed? can't you hear and just write it down? they're not difficult to discern.
On top of old smokey

From courting too slow

And a false hearted lover
Is worse than a thief
For a thief will just rob you

Will lead you to the grave
And the grave will decay
You and turn you to dust
Not one girl in fifty
A poor boy can trust
They'll hug you and kiss you
And tell you more lies
Than cross lines on a railroad
Or stars in the skies
So come all your maidens
And listen to me
Never place your affections
On a green willow tree
For the leaves they will wither
And the roots they will die
You'll all be forsaken
And never know why
@@jimorlando8664 I wasn't *asking* for lyrics; I was making fun of the uploader who asked for them (look at the title).
