"I feel like a priest who won the lottery"
I had the pleasure of "dj'ing" (HA) music between bands at the SJ's show in SF 2 years prior on their first tour at the Mezzanine of all places when Monotonix (who were like an Israeli Jesus Lizard) and Chris Stroffolino's Continuous Peasant opened. I did my mood-setting best by slythering in some Bob Seger and (upbeat) Royal Trux songs. That club is like the inside of Battlestar Galactica, but in that hi-tech dj pulpit thing, I had the best seat in the house.
-> 2008 they played the Filmore, with James Jackson Toth opening solo because his band had dispersed on tour; David had peeled away the shrinkwrap from all the vinyl items in their merch booth and sketched or written something different with a sharpie on each album; I got the ny jets/jews trucker cap. The sound that night was SO compressed and BASS-MUFFLED, it was surreal. It was like FOAM SOUND, like some heavy metal records sound. I've often thought since how David halted recording during one of the first Natural Bridge sessions because it sounded "like heavy metal" to him, and that such an odd aural curse would beset a Silver Jews performance. I feel it is somewhat in line with his description of San Francisco's culture-"gentrified"-tech evolution; both their playing at Mezzanine (all concrete and glass) and Filmore, gilded-historical, yet modified with "all of today's best gear." To just go into it, and leave. It is to his and their credit they persevered that way live.
He did tell the crowd he loved them. Like Ozzy.

Hey my friend. I'm making a film about David and his poetry. What are the chances you could share this audio with me? If used, I would promise full attribution in credits.

I wonder how many people who David thought that they thought they didn’t belong in the music/ poetry world actually didn’t like him...Anxiety is a bitch
