Today we read about the critical moment when Assyria destroys the Northern Kingdom, and the ten northern tribes are exiled and assimilated among the nations. Fr. Mike explains how this moment and the foreign possession of Samaria is key in order to understand Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4. We also read about how the prophet Micah beautifully foreshadows the birth of Jesus. Today's readings are 2 Kings 17, Micah 5-7, and Psalm 140.

It never ceases to amaze me how much this young priest is able to bring out of passages that seemed dry and even boring (Lord, forgive me) before they were explained. I love it when he relates the Old Testament to the New. I love the deeper meanings he finds in the readings. May God bless him and watch over him and keep him safe. Amen.

This is another of those misnamed 'Bible in a year' days that are so saturated with meaning that they put the brakes on the journey and leave people like myself 'ruminating spiritual cud' for days overwhelmed by the enormity and depth of what I'm hearing. Lord Jesus, I humbly pray for myself, Father Mike, & all the people participating in the Bible-in-Year podcast. May your word take deep root in our hearts & transform our ways of thinking, discerning, and acting. May your grace open our ears to hear & understand both the Old & the New Testaments that we may revere & treasure the words which God has prepared for all who desire to enter his kingdom. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness & humility, & with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Help us to be diligent students & faithful disciples of your Word. Day 183! Gee, what a pivotal day in our BIAY! 10 tribes of Israel - gone! The birth of our Savior Jesus Christ foretold 700 years beforehand, and the amazing coincidence of the Samaritan woman at the well and her 5 husbands and the current one not being her husband! 😳🙏

Fun fact: The first two tribes to fall to the Assyrian Empire are the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali, which during Jesus' time would've been know as the region of Galilee. Guess where Jesus' public ministry began? Jesus starts his ministry in this region to undo the effects of the Assyrian Exile. The preaching of coming the Kingdom of God announces to Jew and Gentile alike that their exile is over, and that the unification of Israel and the ingathering of the Gentiles is at hand through the Universal Church.

Lord, You are our deliverer. Thank you for the richness of your word. So cool to see how the OT reflects the NT in so many ways… even the Samaritan at the well having five husbands representing the five Assyrian cities that came in to overtake Northern Israel - but you have called her/us to be your bride whether Jew or Gentile. May we seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly with you always. Increase our wisdom so we can see you more! 🙏🏻

A great reminder to continue following God, avoid distractions, and trust in Him and in Jesus.
*We see imperfect faith as some followed the Lord God along with graven images. That is similar to how some would worship Jesus but also worship their work, political ideology or worse, some other religious thing as well. We need to be of perfect heart when it comes to God. Like how David was.
*Through various phrases like “you will sow but not reap,” we are reminded that without God's grace and willingness, we will not succeed in our endeavors. Thus, our efforts need the support of prayers and God's blessings.
* Judah and Benjamin could return from Babylon to the land to resettle but the Northern tribes (of Israel) could never return from Assyria. The king of Assyria made 5 nations (Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim) live in the Northern Israel then it became Samaria, which had Samaritans (non-Jews) but due to lions killing people, the king of Assyria brought a non-Levite priest that followed after Jeroboam’s doctrine and taught the corrupt version of the Old Testament. Samaritans believed that their god is the same God as the True God worshiped by the people of Judah and Benjamin. This also shows the importance of the Catholic Church and its line of priesthood vs. those not from the Catholic Church.
*John Ch5 shows the excellent way of God communicating with us and the Samaritan woman. I never realized that the 5 previous partners (not husbands) of the lady were the 5 nations brought into Northern Israel and the 1 current partner was also not her husband. Thus, showing that the worship needed to be at Jerusalem but now with Jesus, it can be anywhere only if everyone starts believing in the One True God and Jesus. Such a great reference to the Old Testament's story in the 700 BC! Thank you, Fr. Mike for sharing this!
*The verse in Micah 5:2 clearly predicts Jesus as God Himself returning. That should have been enough to convince people that Jesus is indeed God and Messiah. From the small town of Bethlehem, comes the one who rules Israel (God's people) for me (God). I add that Jesus rules through heart and not by force or war. Spiritual warfare for sure but not war among humans or anyone on Earth. Like St. Paul said, our enemies are principalities. Especially the Devil who wants everyone to stay away from God and Jesus. Thus, from salvation.

God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.

I've only just found this series and am excited to start but I can't seem to find where I can download the free reading plan. I've clocked on the attached link in the description and signed up to the Ascension site but still can't find any route to getting it. Could you please help me?
You have to go to Ascension Presents channel (in this video click where it says Ascension Presents). When you are in the channel you have to scroll down to Bible in a Year and click there. And all episodes will show up, from day 1 and the introduction to the podcast.
I used a calculator. 365÷2=182.5 yep 1/2 way through.
So if the tribes of the north are gone forever, what happens to the Levitical(line of Aaron) priesthood?
