I love Fr Merton's admonition to not try and cultivate a practice, but simply to be present with an open and loving heart~I think this is where we fuse with the Mystery, the Triune Presence. I have tried for decades to cultivate a prayer practice and while I LOVE prayer, I have come to understand that " being" in the present, non - judgementally and lovingly, connects me far better than all the years and hours spent on my bedroom floor. Fr Merton is genius for me.
God rest his soul. Fr. Merton was a gift to humanity, and religious in particular, able to articulate what it means to have a relationship with the Triune God, the Source of all creation...
What matters most is how he saved my life. 😢 to me, he saved me in the worst moment, when reading the Bible couldn’t help me. So I consider him a saint
Merton lived through abandonment and different levels of hell to arrive at his destination: envelopment of the pure light that is God. Thank you Lord for the gift of our Merton. 🙏🙏🙏
The photo above says it all doesn't it? Shared joy with fellow people. Being thankful for the moment and present in it. If a Creator saw fit to give that gift, then my prayers are thankful for the experience. Sitting alone in the void of darkness. Seeming stillness brings with it a certain clarity. My senses focus, A night bird sings cheerily I think I understand 💛
Thomas Merton has taught me that my efforts to be a good Catholic does not rely on observing the dogma. I felt sinful because I was going through the motions but feeling bored. I now understand that being myself is all God wants. At 70 I have finally realised that God loves me. What a prophet. Bless him 🙏 ❤️ with love for us all ❤
Has anyone else actually seen what’s described in section 27:38 to 28:47? - An actual physical vision of God’s presence pervading absolutely everything, while your eyes are wide open & being fully awake? A glimpse behind the veil that makes our regular daily view of the world seem to be just a beautiful mask. And the God that is seen is as real as looking at this screen now - no metaphors. And what’s revealed, (what’s felt), can only be described as total Love - as God. Please share your experience if so. Thanks, Phill.
I often wonder how Thomas Merton would deal with the drama going on in the church today? His answer is right here! Merely stay open to the love ❤️ of our God. He faced heartache of world wars by continuing to stay open to the Holy Love of God. There will always be evil in this gutter muddy world 🌎 Contemplation and continuing to speak with our God. The answer is to continue to stay open to the holy love of our God. Holy love will convert everything. ❤❤❤ Bless you Thomas Merton 🙏 ❤️ ♥️ 💙
Rest in paradise, Fr. Merton. This world might have been too complicated for you ~ crazy rules that didn't make sense. . Now Buddhists appreciate who you were and all you brought.
@@johnllewlyndavies222 Merton had fallen into the Modernist heresies of his time. He teamed up with a radical feminist, sought to remove himself from his Abbot's restrictions and enjoyed an affair with a student nurse. By the time of his shocking death, he had abandoned the Trappists, sought enlightenment in Buddhism, and made a speech on Communism. Thus he became the perfect Vat. 2 man.
A great discussion, I think, though it seems presumptuous to consider God as a him. Tradition demands it, but what does it mean to say God? What is God?
Tradition demands it, because that is how He chose to be designated in His Sacred Word. And it is more respectful to use a Capital H when you write "Him". That distinguishes the difference between you and Him.Jesus said that "God is a Spirit", yet all through Bible history, He has described Himself as having a finger, an arm, eyes etc...., and yet He is a Spirit and we cannot see Him, but He did say through His Sacred Word that He made them male and female, in His own image. Therefore from the beginning He let us know that it is possible to know Him even as a Spirit, and yet it is as Merton said in this video, and then when we think we have gotten to know Him, we realize that we do not know Him. For me, I am satisfied that that is because He knows more about all of us, than any of us will ever know about Him before we die from the earthly life.
Merton is a Buddhist not a Christian or at least a Christian Buddhist. Why not just say so Instead of bringing Christianity in disrepute. The Christian mandate is to go into all the world peaching the gospel baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, not renouncing the self. God requires mercy not sacrifice. The Buddhist seeks the extinction of the self and Merton the total letting go of self. No difference. We are called to live to Jesus Christ not hide away in a closet.
How in the world can Merton say the thing to do is to forget about yourself and enjoy it?27:18. Don’t you have to forget you enjoy it? Just be a Buddhist. It’s okay.
He destroyed his vocation by going woke, having an affair with a young nurse, ditching his religious habit, having a religious experience in a Buddhist garden, flying off to give a talk on Communism, and being electrocuted by a faulty fan. He had been a good monk for 10 years until Vatican 2. So sad, such a disappointment 😥
You will get over this disappointment if you keep on reading what he wrote. You will grow in depth and living awareness of God if you are able to listen to the seed of Contemplation in your heart. But that takes paying attention to your own longing for more than what you already know and believe. To be alive in God means letting the dry husks of what you are sure of stop being what you worship. Then you will be able to accept what you aren't certain of, accept the reality of what you can't control, and accept the holiness and Godness of your insecurity. You can get over your disappointment. Your life is not Merton's life. Your life is in God. Stay awake and aware.
@@charlotteweaver-gelzer515 I read The Seeds of Contemplation and The famous Seven Story Mountain before V2. He was a faithful monk loved by millions. But books he wrote later in his life revealed the unraveling of his faith.

I really enjoyed listening to Father Merton. I can sense he was really close to our messiah. We all must pick up our cross and follow the Messiah.

Wise words indeed. Enjoyed the frank nature of his talks. Amen

Living gratefully is the penultimate prayer. For that is living in "God."
Merton commented on his prayer life! Positive response by R. Barron, bishop of Rochester MN. In his own voice!

I do not pray----preferably I talk to God❣️❣️❣️
8:13 Falleness is to have an ambiguous heart.
I read somewhere he is now an Ascended master..
Prayer is God talking to Himself.

I think he's referring to Jean Pierre de Caussade, who has a book entitled Abandonment to Divine Providence'

Eckhart?
He left the choir to be a hermit. That was his downfall.

Hermeticism is the foundation of the church, as Christ spent 40 days in the desert before being crucified.
