Thank you for the video. I would love to build some plywood aquariums now. I used to be not really be interested in it, but seeing it being built changed that. The epoxy coat looks great actually. I think I like it a lot better than the pond shield look. Thanks again for the video. God bless you.
Hi Mike, did you consider chopstrand fibreglass on the tank? It's supposed to be used for waterproofing and strengthening. You use a few coats of resin with it, and finish with a flowcoat epoxy with colouring in it.
I used chopstrand i believe. Its weaved in every direction so its strong in all directions. The fiberglass glass people are confusing. Talked to a lot of them but they don't know anything past what they do which is almost never making a big aquarium. I think the fiberglass work was completely unnecessary. I could have just laid dry glass into the interseal epoxy along all the seams and I know that would have been sufficient. The gel coats they use and even the fiberglass resin are just types of epoxy anyway.
@@OffTheDeepEndAquatics Check out this guy ua-cam.com/video/W60iuC5T1FM/v-deo.html He's from here in the UK, and fibre glasses koi ponds. He has lots of videos on youtube. I am gonna use the same stuff as him on my plywood build. I don't think the fibreglass you used was the waterproofing type. It was weaved stuff rather than chopstrand, but the resin is maybe good enough. Plus all the layers of epoxy paint you used.
OUTSTANDING video! Very educational, your doing a great job, keep those video's rolling. Just let me get my 1000 up and running before this thing....lol.
You'll need to go back and watch part one to fully understand but they need to be different sizes for different size pieces of glass. I recommend a minimum of 3" overlap
Good job on sourcing the Interseal 670 HS. I was trying to get some for a build, but they wound up not selling to me. They don't sell to DIY'ers. I will look at some other options, Pentair, Sherman Williams, or Benjamin Moore. What was the epoxy you used when fiberglassing, and your base coat? And did you have any issues with "blush"? Did you have to wipe it down before applying paint? I didn't notice you prepare the surface before paint in any way. Sorry if you explained that already.
Dm if u can on Instagram and I can help you get it if you need some in the future. I had the same problem they wouldn't sell to me but they have lots of reps all over the United States that will sell it
Hello Mike, I am planning a Monster Tank inside a climate controlled building, next year. 12x22x4 total of 8,000 gallons. It's going to be cinderblock construction with epoxy inside. I will be breeding Japanese koi in it.
ua-cam.com/video/15KdOfXZXM0/v-deo.html here is the link to my video. If u decide u want to use interseal u can mesg me on Instagram and I'll try to help u find it local to u
Interseal 670HS is available here in the UK, unlike Pond Shield. Did anyone ever have any issues with 670HS, especially when applied to fibreglass? I will be building my first ever plywood aquarium soon. I'm weighing up 670HS versus other epoxy available here in the UK.
It wasn't bad imo but I did get 1 bad batch that the supplier gave me a bad ratio. It was noticeable that 1 part was way less than it should have been. Didn't matter in the long run because I did like 8 plus coats. I wouldn't say it's the most ideal but it worked and I don't know a more ideal option
@OffTheDeepEndAquatics thanks. I did order another brand in the UK, but then learned I cannot use it on fibreglass due to likely flaking. I will go with (black) interseal-670hs now. Thanks for warning on the smell. I will ventilate and wear a mask. You need to make a comeback on UA-cam. All the best.
i will be building one of my own very soon this year not as big but maybe a 1000 gals whats the one thing you wish you knew before building this one like one mistake that woulda changed your whole experience building this
I have done alot of fiberglass work. If you do another tank try going wider with your seam glass and then come back with a DA (dual-action) sander and feather the glass in. If you want to get real anal before epoxy you can go over everything with thin coats of bondo (automotive) and get everything perfectly smooth just like you would when you paint a car.
Hey thanks for the comment that makes a lot of sense. I ended up relying on the epoxy and sanding to make most of the seams go away but if I could go back I would have done what you're saying. Like I said in the video it was my first time. Luckily it still got the job done
@7:49. It was literally "Killing you"....the smell you were talking about, and its effects, are the isocyanites in the paint/epoxy. Whatever you ingest, never leaves your system. Some serious stuff. I work in autobody trade and the epoxies we use are bad....and i imagine that stuff is even worse. Looks good tho...i am watching closely as this is similar to what i am looking to do
Man braddah Mike that tank is looking Cherry 🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
You have inspired me to build a plywood tank. Absolutely love it.
Keep up the great work buddy I can't wait to see it finished getting impatient now lol
It's turning out to be an awesome build can't wait to see it filled with water and fish
I second that. Really looking forward to seeing it with fish in it.🐟🌿😊👍

Hey Mike, the tank is looking great. Well done! 👍
Can’t wait to see the final product going to be a cool tank for sure
Used Pond Armor on my build and its been amazing. 3 years out and its awesome.

Thank you bro! and you've got about a month id say to get that 1000 rolling but I'm gonna cheat to hopefully get mine going in a month...
@@OffTheDeepEndAquatics part 14 just released, I'm full throttled now_TOP FUEL baby....lol
It looks good , I plan on having my next tank as a plywood tank so this video is pretty helpful
Nice update.
Looks really good I did alot of experimenting on my build back in 2014.
Excellent work so far....gonna be epic
Its awesome and cant wait till you finished..
Looking great Mike! The seem wont be noticable at all when you fill it,besides the epoxy really covered it well.👍👍
Thanks Eddy I hope so!
Wow looks awesome man!! Well done love it so far!!
Awesome progress keep up the great work, looking forward to next video 😁👍
Great job and info i'm looking for a similar build in the future tks man keep it up
Love it mike. Can’t wait to see water in it.
How wide are the edges for you window? I see different sizes. I'm half way on a build and would like to know
Thanks and awesome vids by the way!

I'm really eager to see the final built💯🍀⚒️ and would like to know if you'll be using Acrylic or glass as the viewing panels?
He bought the glass from someone selling it online. He designed the tank around the size of the glass panels..... He got a great deal on the glass.
Tap tap tap looking good

That would be insane! Hope you post updates while you start the build so I can follow along
Any links to find the epoxy you used? Building a plywood tank and trying to do more research

Nice. Cant wait to see filtration for 1500
What thickness of glass will you use for the front panel?
Looks sweet!
Cool build. Thinking of building a bigger tank for my red arrow. 200 gallon is a littel to small for the big guy. Learing allot from you.
I used flex seal on the one I built been going for 2 years now
Maybe adding a universal rock background to it would hide all the blemishes and would look bad ass.
Id love to but it would cost more than the tank cost to build. They're super expensive and at this size it would be insane expensive

Where did you get the epoxy from?
"Surface Works" located in West Bridgewater MA. If u call them they can probably refer u to a location near you that sells it.
