The Weller Brothers’ company was a line of ships that supplied whalers on long voyages, apparently bringing such items as sugar, tea, and rum, in addition to food and water. “Tonguing” means cutting whale blubber into strips to be rendered into oil, a job which came with a distinctly horrible smell, as it could take days to tongue an entire whale, so it might begin rotting before it is processed. They also kept other parts of the whale; whalebone, for example, was useful in making tools, and certain valuable oils are present in the brain, if I recall correctly. I’ve heard it said that one of the Weller brothers, Joseph, died abroad, and his body was sent back to Australia in a barrel of rum, much like Nelson’s. Merry Christmas, Seán, and happy new year.
Thanks, Sean! I'm a sailor aboard a modern-day man-o-war, and your fantastic songs are inspiring. A day may come when classic sea shanties are not sung anymore, but it won't happen on my watch. Roll tide and roll Alabama, roll!
Technically speaking man-o-wars didn't have sea shanties. Military ships were actually quite quiet as it was believed by officers that singing would get in the way of hearing orders. So military ships didn't have sea shanties as a general rule.
This arrangement has major "person who's worked the midnight shift at a sailors' tavern for too long and has resigned themselves to the fact that most of their customers are probably ghosts from sunken whaling ships but nobody believes them so they just deal with it" vibes
Cool rendition, it has a grim and mysterious feel to it. Usually, this song sounds like "look at us brave wellermen fighting at sea for ages, we won't sleep before we get that whale", but this version sounds much more like the voyage is doomed but the crew goes along with it anyway.
I feel no little difficulty about this song, however you have, as always, managed to help change my view, and consider the song anew. Thank you sir, as always, and have a lovely holiday.
Hooray love this song. I could definitely hear this in the background of a movie or assassins creed. Hopefully it gets used and you can use your version

I’ve never really been a fan of the Wellerman tbh. I always thought it lacked emotion. The additions of some of those instruments really brought it to life in my opinion. This rendition really has made me come to liking this song, and to say that I almost didn’t click when this came up in my recommended!
Happy Holidays Sean! Glad to hear another from you. This song actually got a lot of my friends and brothers to get into shanties. It definitely showed people just how amazing shanties can be.
I love the more downward inflection you put to the "Sugar and Tea and Rum" line. Between that and your amazing band, it gave the song a morose kind of feel. You've definitely made your own piece stand apart from the rest. Thank you for everything you do!
When you spend more hour just enjoying the songs while roaming the sea than the actual game... WELL DONE SIR my best bud is a big fan of these songs too 😁
I enjoy seeing your sprightly little dog. I eventually found you by searching UA-cam for shanties because I'd heard the GameStop version of this, even though I'd found other shanty playlists before that. Best wishes to you for the new year.
Loved your version of this song Sean, the best one by far. Hope you and your family have had a lovely holiday. My sister got hit bad by flooding in BC but has managed to have a happy Christmas. All the best
Honestly I had grown tired of the Wellerman over the last year. Its the most overplayed nautical song and what I consider to be the "white bread" of the genre but this is now my favorite redition that I really do like. Good work sir!
Hi Seán, I hope you see this. I’m in hospital right now after a pretty hair-raising accident (I will be completely fine eventually though!) and your music is helping me a lot. Nights have been a little hard, but I put on your albums via bandcamp and that helps me calm down. Thank you.
I will be fine in a few weeks! (Although unfortunately I lost my pigtail to the incident, argh.) And while I’m not quite fine yet, your music makes me feel safe and at home.
I love The Longest Johns' version. It's what got me interested in shanties in the first place, that being said, I absolutely adore this version!!! They're great singers in their own right and many of my favorite songs are TLJ, but theres something about the quality of your recordings that lend a feeling of authenticity. Any time I hear a new shanty or sea/ship based song, my immediate reaction is, I hope Sean does this, it'd be great to hear how it's supposed to be done. Lol Thank you for this Christmas gift. I will treasure it forever!
Great work as always Sean! Thanks for sharing some of your instrument collection too. Actually I have a question about that. At 4:06, is the large one on the extreme left, with the bent ribbed back, a lute? The body looks like one but that pegbox/head looks very strange. I'd love to know more
Do you mean the oud? It's got a pear-shaped body and a bent back peg box. It's an Arabic instrument and is the ancestor of the European lute. (Al 'ud becomes el laudo becomes the lute)
What a wonderful Christmas present! Thanks, Sean! You took the song that more or less started the current sea shanty craze, and instead of simply doing yet another cover, you made it your own. Well done! Hope you're doing well. Merry Christmas! Also, Flora! ♥️
