I was just about to order one, but thought I'd better learn what's involved in cleaning and maintenance first. I'm sure glad I did. I immediately dropped my plan to buy one. It's incredible to me to think that one has to go through this tricky and elaborate process monthly just to maintain and clean a coffee grinder. I'm sure glad I didn't rely on the Eureka Mignon user manual. Here's the totality of its instructions for cleaning the grinding system: "open the upper burr holder. Then, clean the blades and the other internal parts with a brush or a dry cloth. If necessary, use a vacuum cleaner or an air compressed jet. After having installed back the upper burr holder and the lid, install the hopper." Wow! Really helpful, eh? For those of you who already one one of these grinders, this video will be a life-saver. As for me, it saved me from making a purchase I know I'd come to regret.
At 30:45, showing cleaning under the burr carrier - he doesn't emphasise it much in the video, but mine was CRAMMED with super fine oily grounds, and cleaning it out really well really helped the carrier spin more freely. A bamboo skewer whittled to a sharp point is a great tool for all the cleaning. My Silenzio didn't work this morning & I nearly had a heart attack. I'd never cleaned it. Followed this video and we're back on board. Thanks so much for such a well produced and detailed video.
You can get the lower burr out easily by sticking an allen wrench or any other small tool through the screw hole and gently prying it upwards. Pops right off. Thanks for the detailed video!
I cleaned my Specialita for the first time after several months of use, and it was rather easy thanks to this informative video. The shiny chrome top cover and chute cover are cheap, chrome plated plastic, so handle carefully and don’t force those pieces when reassembling. After cleaning, the machine ran quieter (like new), and the grind volume into the portafilter increased back to exactly 18g. I’ll probably clean this machine every 30 days from now on.
Bought my specialita 6 months ago, never cleaned it up or tampered with it. Suddenly it wouldnt grind coffee, listening that clicking sound at the beggining with no movement from the burrs, I totally freaked out assuming that it broke after only six months of use. Turns out the Chute was severily clogged. You totally saved the day, cant thank you enough for this thorough and straightforward guide.

Great video - clear instructions. I've had my Specialita for 2yrs and have only just cleaned it using the detail in this video. I've had only one instance in the past where it clogged but it was resolved by adjusting grind size. I would recommend this grinder based on my own use. Thanks again!
Omg this is a godsend. I felt my grinder was not grinding as much and it eventually stopped. Low and behold, the dispenser was caked on with old espresso. Thank you for this video

Whew, I'm relieved! I thought that I had damaged my grinder after abruptly switching to a coarser grind setting. It was only that the burrs were clogged as a result and needed to be cleaned.
If you put your flathead screwdriver in the screw hole of the bottom burr and use that as your point of leverage - it comes out with significantly less difficulty

Good, detailed step by step instructions. To lesson anxiety of losing screws down the body of the grinder, put crumpled up paper towels in the open corners and in the open recess where the chute sits when assembled.
I unfortunately could’ve used this tip before I went through the process and unfortunately one did fall into the unit. I’d love to hear anyone’s advice on how to safely retrieve it.
Great video. I would like to add a request to show how to remove the lower plate that holds the bottom burr. Turns out there is enough space there for grounds to find their way between the base plate and top of the motor casing. The brass nut to remove this plate is left hand threaded (clockwise to remove) and I was amazed to find large amounts of packed in coffee grounds that was causing my grinder to bind up. Just enough resistance to trigger the auto-shutoff switch to protect the motor and burrs as designed. I had about 4 years of build up(4-5 coffees per day) there despite nice sweepers built into base plate. Hope this comment can help others in figuring out how to get their Eureka grinder clean and spinning freely.
It's a good video, thank you. I have a Silenzio, which seems almost identical except for the front gauge. I had a few issues. The screws on the upper burr holder are quite soft. I stripped one (the store sent me a few more for free). So make sure you use a Phillips 2 screwdriver and be gentle. The screws on the burrs themselves use a smallish flathead screwdriver, and they are also a bit on the soft side. The little gizmo that stops the coffee from clumping in the chute requires a very small Phillips, the kind you use for fixing glasses. So yes, it's a bit complicated and the company could include guidance on tools needed. Happily, they are just screwdrivers, and I got what I needed for about $10. The grinder works very well after about eight months, no complaints about quality. It's a bit delicate to dial in grinds, as it's very sensitive, but it seems to be a quality product.
This is a nice change of pace and for a very popular grinder series. I had this exact problem and found very little information when searching for how to do this type of maintenance. Wish this was out a month ago!

There is absolutely no need to remove the shoot assembly. Once the top is off, you will see the square hole where the burrs shoot the coffee which gets plugged up and use a small brush to clear the clog then vacuum the shoot from the outside. Except for that, this is a good video for removal of that lower burr. I do find that there is a retention issue with this grinder even where I wet a single dose with water to cut down on static.
Thanks for the video. In my view, this video highlights a design flaw in Eureka grinders (at least the mignon and Atom lines) and that is the complexity in carrying out a routine cleaning. Why cannot they design these grinders so that one screwdriver will do it all? There are grinders on the market that allow cleaning without any tools. Eureka could do better.
I agree. Seeing this is making me want to buy a mass market conical grinder again. Lifting the hopper to brush the burr and using cleaning tablets should be good enough.
They might have listened to you, I just got a Mignon Oro Stark 65 (basically the XL without the accessories) and no more hex head screw. Still need both Philips and flathead screwdrivers though 😅
If you look at only this video of cleaning of a eureka it is easy to conclude this is a hard grinder to clean. Compared to other grinders in this price bracket the eureka is pretty straightforward to clean. (rocky is a nightmare to clean) There are definitely easier grinders to clean out there, but they are either out of this price or performance bracket.
@@LowsJuan I own an Atom and speak from experience. These grinders could very easily have been made for much easier cleaning, as per my original post. Probably would be a little cheaper to manufacture, too, because if fewer distinctive parts. Otherwise, it is a good grinder for its price though far from perfect.

25:50 be careful! My grinder didn't have enough wire between the microswitch and the device to pull the front plate off without pulling the connector apart. I had a dirty grinder. I now have a broken grinder. It's a design or build flaw.
After reading the actual "manual" that came with this thing ("lift off the lid, remove the burrs", no image or further description) was really underwhelming, this actually helps me do maintenance, thank you.
fantastic step by step instructions. I discovered by watching that my specialita did not come with the "Clump Crusher" so will have to follow up with SC. A link to dialing in the optimal grind after cleaning would be great. Have not yet been through the burr alignment. Hoping that is not a big deal.
I did this for the 1st time(XL) . Didn't remove the bottom burr and didn't remove the clump crusher. I have a metal chute that fits inside the plastic chute. Cleaned and put back together but now i have huge coffee retention. >2g. Any idea what I might have done wrong?

Important tip! Mark the burrs with a whiteboard market, to ensure you put them back in the way they came out, or the results will be terrible. Ask me how I know?
Thanks for the video, really helped me a lot. I did not go all the way to remove the bottom burr (maybe next time). But I realised my zero point changed after putting all back together. My zero was at number 1, now it is at 0.5. Would you know if that is normal?
Have you thought about using a socket and socket wrench on the brass nut, probably a little neater and less chance of rounding the brass nut. You could use a tooth brush instead of those flexible brushes.
I'm attempting this on my Eureka now- the three screws holding the top burr are impossibly tight, I'm afraid they will strip. Any suggestions to get these out?
Rather than dismantle the whole path as in this video, I used the air compressor to blow it all out after removing the top burr. Fingers crossed it worked.
Hopefully this worked out for you! Being gentle with compressed air can help, but too much can send residue and grounds into problem areas around the motor, so you should definitely use this tactic with care.
There are two sets of wires that attach to the front face. One goes to the LCD screen & other goes to the momentary switch. The LCD wires can be removed becasue they are on a plastic connector. This will give you more room when cleaning. The wires to the switch go to the control board under the motor. It also has a plastic connector that can be removed. Be careful with these as they are thin & soldered (to switch, then covered in heat shrink). Flip the machine over to remove the control board & vacumm it too. Good luck putting it back together!
No. It's a part of life. But this is the super thorough version most people just take off the top burr brush the burrs, vacuum or use canned air and reassemble. Removing the lower one maybe once a year or so.
Baratza grinders are easier. No tool kit required unless you need to remove the bottom burr. Generally conical burrs are lower retention and easy to clean.
Hi, I unscrewed 3 screws, lift and pulled and after an hour still couldn't get the front panel off, even took off the bottom plate and managed to snap one of four hooks of the panel, why does it look so easy when you do it? BTW new machine.
Good instructional video except for the fact that it misleads the viewer into thinking the lower burr plate needs to by pried up from the outer circumference. If one does this, they will end up damaging the edges of the burr housing at its only made from soft aluminium. If one removes and clears the chute parts first, they will be able to use a wedge to lift up the lower burr plate from the opening, in the burr housing, that aligns with the chute.
@@montereycalifornia Clive coffee found the specialita only had 1.3g retention which is pretty good. But not sure if thats retention that actually gets exchanged or sits there statically until being cleaned out not really affecting your coffee. Whole latte love did a retention video and found the sette270 somehow had higher retention than the baratza vario. I think about .6g vs like 1g on the sette. I've heard it does have some retention from other sources too but youd think it should be even lower with that design.

My specialita got clog, so i took apart like you did. But be careful when you remove the front panel, the wire that goes to the button for starting grinding was stuck so by mistake i tore it up and felt very sad 😞 then i had to weld back the wire to the button. Was a scary process. So be careful with that part. Your video is very well made.

@@CajournoOddity Thanks. I got my brand new Eureka Mignon Silenzio clogged on the first day of using it 🤪 and went through the cleaning process as shown on the video. It is specially important to move the setting knob only when the burrs are running. I know that now. Tomorrow in the morning when I am going to using the grinder hopefully ground coffee will come out of the chute 🙏
Hi! The only thing I didn't see addressed is the dinky screw at the back of the hopper (not the one under the Eureka decal). Somehow I got it screwed in initially but when I cleaned the grinder, the screw would not go back it. There was nothing for the threads of the screw to attach to! While a new grinder is coming (our computer screen also decided to quit and not change time). I don't know how it will be any different or work better. I don't want a screw hanging loosely from the back of a high end grinder. In addition to being useless, it looks bad! Do you have a suggestion? Just thinking--can you just lift the hopper off and leave the screw in place since it appears basically decorative? I watched again and see this screw left behind in this video! I can't tell if it is flush against the flat surface though. That's what I'm after. Thanks!
help!!!! just got my Silenzio, and now it’s not working, the timer works but the grinder not grinding and it’s super hot. Should I just disassemble it or ask the seller for help
I appreciate the video, and it was helpful, BUT I CANT RECOMMEND this grinder. There's a reason that this video exists. After two weeks of use, my new Specialita clogs after 3 seconds of grinding. Disassemble, clean with compressed air and a wire pipe cleaner on the chute, reassemble. Adjust to "coarse" running the machine empty, add beans, clogs again after 3 seconds. Three times I cleaned it but no constructive result. Very frustrating. Lost my confidence in this grinder and although I like the design of it, it's nothing more than a nice $700 door stop.
I have the same issue 🥲 it can’t last 2 weeks without needing to do this tedious task of cleaning it. May just switch to another grinder. Probably hand grinder.
Never had a single clog in 1.5 years and only cleaned like this once. Just thought I'd better do another clean, returned to this video and had to comment here with a different experience. It is a great grinder
As a tip, I use a single dosed with bellows. After each grind I let the machine run and puff out any residual grinds. Even if you are using the hopper a once a week single dosed ‘puff’ will do the job and hopefully reduce this task to once every 6months to a year. Grind settings are obviously important too as too fine (as I was doing unnecessarily) adds to the potential clogging problem😊
I had similar experiences with it going for 3 seconds. Not sure where you get the pipe cleaner bit from. I tried to shortcut and just clean the burrs. Turns out my grinder had a completely blocked chute and I needed to follow the video right to the end. Not sure how long it will stay working though, I can’t bear the thought of this process every week mind. A vacuum cleaner and paint brush are important tools along with the adjustable wrench and a selection of medium and small Philips screwdrivers. As a second tip be careful when you remove the hopper, it’s very easy to break the plastic ring that pushes into the main grinder.

Hi there, it's hard to say. It's possible there's an issue with the motor, or there's some sort of seizing due to oil build up. It could also be a board issue. Our best advice is to carefully remove the top burr for cleaning, clean what you can out of the grind chamber, and try again. You could also try reaching out to the manufacturer.
Hi, thanks for the nice video. I have a question: does it always "make no sound" when burrs are jammed? While making an adjustment in big steps while motor was off, I felt like hearing a different noise than usual as soon as I turned it on. I was afraid that burrs were touching each other and stopped the grinder immediately. Going to coarser setting and then slowly back to finer solved the problem (found out later that actually the burrs were so away from touching each other). However after watching this video, I am not sure there has been a jam at all. Having this experience in the first day with my Specialita, do I still have to clean it? Thanks in advance for your advice.
The same problem appeared with my specialita after 2 months of usage. Burrs start making screeching noises when i'm making the setting finer. Removing and cleaning the burrs didn't help and i can see marks on burrs where they contact. I'm grinding for espresso and it was ok before, but now i can't follow the recipy, as time of one shot became too short( about 20 sec for 36gr instead of 26). Not shure what to do.

Well done Jake - excellent tutorial on cleaning grinder. I would offer one suggestion that for me I have found to be a game changer. I use this hand held cordless vac that has a hose. It does a great job and is very easy to clean as well. After a year of service I wouder how I could live without it. It is a Black & Decker. (rocky is a nightmare to clean) There are definitely easier grinders to clean out there, but they are either out of this price or performance bracket.
@@LowsJuan I own an Atom and speak from experience. These grinders could very easily have been made for much easier cleaning, as per my original post. Probably would be a little cheaper to manufacture, too, because if fewer distinctive parts. Otherwise, it is a good grinder for its price though far from perfect.

25:50 be careful! My grinder didn't have enough wire between the microswitch and the device to pull the front plate off without pulling the connector apart. I had a dirty grinder. I now have a broken grinder. It's a design or build flaw.

I use disposable mascara brushes, perfectly fits all Eureka curves and holes :)
fantastic step by step instructions. I discovered by watching that my specialita did not come with the "Clump Crusher" so will have to follow up with SC. A link to dialing in the optimal grind after cleaning would be great. Have not yet been through the burr alignment. Hoping that is not a big deal.

I did this for the 1st time(XL) . Didn't remove the bottom burr and didn't remove the clump crusher. I have a metal chute that fits inside the plastic chute. Cleaned and put back together but now i have huge coffee retention. >2g. Any idea what I might have done wrong?

Important tip! Mark the burrs with a whiteboard market, to ensure you put them back in the way they came out, or the results will be terrible. Ask me how I know?

Thanks for the video, really helped me a lot. I did not go all the way to remove the bottom burr (maybe next time). But I realised my zero point changed after putting all back together. My zero was at number 1, now it is at 0.5. Would you know if that is normal?
Have you thought about using a socket and socket wrench on the brass nut, probably a little neater and less chance of rounding the brass nut. You could use a tooth brush instead of those flexible brushes.

I'm attempting this on my Eureka now- the three screws holding the top burr are impossibly tight, I'm afraid they will strip. Any suggestions to get these out?
Rather than dismantle the whole path as in this video, I used the air compressor to blow it all out after removing the top burr. Fingers crossed it worked.
Hopefully this worked out for you! Being gentle with compressed air can help, but too much can send residue and grounds into problem areas around the motor, so you should definitely use this tactic with care.
I can’t remove the screws to get the burrs out as they won’t move at all. 😢
There are two sets of wires that attach to the front face. One goes to the LCD screen & other goes to the momentary switch. The LCD wires can be removed becasue they are on a plastic connector. This will give you more room when cleaning. The wires to the switch go to the control board under the motor. It also has a plastic connector that can be removed. Be careful with these as they are thin & soldered (to switch, then covered in heat shrink). Flip the machine over to remove the control board & vacumm it too. Good luck putting it back together!

No. It's a part of life. But this is the super thorough version most people just take off the top burr brush the burrs, vacuum or use canned air and reassemble. Removing the lower one maybe once a year or so.
Baratza grinders are easier. No tool kit required unless you need to remove the bottom burr. Generally conical burrs are lower retention and easy to clean.
Hi, I unscrewed 3 screws, lift and pulled and after an hour still couldn't get the front panel off, even took off the bottom plate and managed to snap one of four hooks of the panel, why does it look so easy when you do it? BTW new machine.

Good instructional video except for the fact that it misleads the viewer into thinking the lower burr plate needs to by pried up from the outer circumference. If one does this, they will end up damaging the edges of the burr housing at its only made from soft aluminium.
If one removes and clears the chute parts first, they will be able to use a wedge to lift up the lower burr plate from the opening, in the burr housing, that aligns with the chute.
In taking out the bottom burr, one screw just will not turn, any suggestions?
Mine were pretty pretty tight from the factory. Ended up stripping out one of the screw heads.
Do you have to recalibrate after doing this?

@@montereycalifornia Clive coffee found the specialita only had 1.3g retention which is pretty good. But not sure if thats retention that actually gets exchanged or sits there statically until being cleaned out not really affecting your coffee. Whole latte love did a retention video and found the sette270 somehow had higher retention than the baratza vario. I think about .6g vs like 1g on the sette. I've heard it does have some retention from other sources too but youd think it should be even lower with that design.

My specialita got clog, so i took apart like you did. But be careful when you remove the front panel, the wire that goes to the button for starting grinding was stuck so by mistake i tore it up and felt very sad 😞 then i had to weld back the wire to the button. Was a scary process. So be careful with that part. Your video is very well made.

@@CajournoOddity Thanks. I got my brand new Eureka Mignon Silenzio clogged on the first day of using it 🤪 and went through the cleaning process as shown on the video. It is specially important to move the setting knob only when the burrs are running. I know that now. Tomorrow in the morning when I am going to using the grinder hopefully ground coffee will come out of the chute 🙏

Hi! The only thing I didn't see addressed is the dinky screw at the back of the hopper (not the one under the Eureka decal). Somehow I got it screwed in initially but when I cleaned the grinder, the screw would not go back it. There was nothing for the threads of the screw to attach to! While a new grinder is coming (our computer screen also decided to quit and not change time).
I don't know how it will be any different or work better. I don't want a screw hanging loosely from the back of a high end grinder. In addition to being useless, it looks bad! Do you have a suggestion?
Just thinking--can you just lift the hopper off and leave the screw in place since it appears basically decorative? I watched again and see this screw left behind in this video! I can't tell if it is flush against the flat surface though. That's what I'm after. Thanks!

I appreciate the video, and it was helpful, BUT I CANT RECOMMEND this grinder. There's a reason that this video exists. After two weeks of use, my new Specialita clogs after 3 seconds of grinding. Disassemble, clean with compressed air and a wire pipe cleaner on the chute, reassemble. Adjust to "coarse" running the machine empty, add beans, clogs again after 3 seconds. Three times I cleaned it but no constructive result. Very frustrating. Lost my confidence in this grinder and although I like the design of it, it's nothing more than a nice $700 door stop.
I have the same issue 🥲 it can’t last 2 weeks without needing to do this tedious task of cleaning it. May just switch to another grinder. Probably hand grinder.
Never had a single clog in 1.5 years and only cleaned like this once. Just thought I'd better do another clean, returned to this video and had to comment here with a different experience. It is a great grinder
It’s worked brilliantly for 3 years for me. The only time I’ve had a clog is if I put dark oily beans in it.
As a tip, I use a single dosed with bellows. After each grind I let the machine run and puff out any residual grinds. Even if you are using the hopper a once a week single dosed ‘puff’ will do the job and hopefully reduce this task to once every 6months to a year. Grind settings are obviously important too as too fine (as I was doing unnecessarily) adds to the potential clogging problem😊
I had similar experiences with it going for 3 seconds. Not sure where you get the pipe cleaner bit from. I tried to shortcut and just clean the burrs. Turns out my grinder had a completely blocked chute and I needed to follow the video right to the end. Not sure how long it will stay working though, I can’t bear the thought of this process every week mind. A vacuum cleaner and paint brush are important tools along with the adjustable wrench and a selection of medium and small Philips screwdrivers.
As a second tip be careful when you remove the hopper, it’s very easy to break the plastic ring that pushes into the main grinder.

Hi there, it's hard to say. It's possible there's an issue with the motor, or there's some sort of seizing due to oil build up. It could also be a board issue. Our best advice is to carefully remove the top burr for cleaning, clean what you can out of the grind chamber, and try again. You could also try reaching out to the manufacturer.
Hi, thanks for the nice video. I have a question: does it always "make no sound" when burrs are jammed? While making an adjustment in big steps while motor was off, I felt like hearing a different noise than usual as soon as I turned it on. I was afraid that burrs were touching each other and stopped the grinder immediately. Going to coarser setting and then slowly back to finer solved the problem (found out later that actually the burrs were so away from touching each other). However after watching this video, I am not sure there has been a jam at all. Having this experience in the first day with my Specialita, do I still have to clean it? Thanks in advance for your advice.
The same problem appeared with my specialita after 2 months of usage. Burrs start making screeching noises when i'm making the setting finer. Removing and cleaning the burrs didn't help and i can see marks on burrs where they contact. I'm grinding for espresso and it was ok before, but now i can't follow the recipy, as time of one shot became too short( about 20 sec for 36gr instead of 26). Not shure what to do.

Well done Jake - excellent tutorial on cleaning grinder. I would offer one suggestion that for me I have found to be a game changer. I use this hand held cordless vac that has a hose. It does a great job and is very easy to clean as well. After a year of service I wouder how I could live without it. It is a Black & Decker.
