History of Cedar Key with Herman Wells

- Herman Wells was a commercial fisherman and boat builder in Cedar Key, Florida for over 35 years. After the State of Florida banned commercial inshore netfishing, Herman opened a wood shop in a building that was his fathers old church.
The Net Ban was a sad thing for Cedar Key. We were only visitors those days but the impact on the little town was very significant. There is a lovely granite marker at City Hall denoting the last fisherman's netting. Sure, the charter fellas still launch there, the clammers work the Gulf, oysterman rake away. But when they banned the nets many men had to find a different living, some who had fished all there lives like Mr. Wells. He is a kind man, having visited his shop he exudes a calm of a wise man. Thank you for this video. Looking forward to crossing Number 4 bridge soon.

Been visiting CK since 92, had many visits with Mr Wells, bought a porch swing from him hauled it back to Texas, made of cypress, he has his own Mill outside of town and makes his furniture out of whatever kind of wood he gets his hands on, quite the man...

I have had the privilege of knowing Mr Wells and can say he is a good person and very talented. A good friend to have in life.

We were blessed to have met and enjoyed Mr. Herman Well’s conversation. He told us about many of things he mentioned in this interview. I still have one of his famous Adirondack chairs & matching stool. I cherished the time with him and Thelma McCain two icons of Cedar Key for sure.

Rode my bike to the key one day for lunch and a couple beers,,,upstairs bar overlooking the gulf kinda on the edge of the strip,,,,,need to get back someday,maybe soon……
