Sifting our DIY Mealworm Bins

  • Recently, I had the idea to raise mealworms as a supplemental protein source for our chickens. We started out with a small input of 200 mealworms, all of which we let grow into adult darkling beetles. We had just begun to see baby mealworms in the lower bin, so I decided to try to sift out some of the old feed and sheddings from the previous generation. The result is a low-maintenance, scalable system.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
What kind of screen did you use? I think they chewed through my last one... Do you know the size of the mesh?

Don’t forget you’re going to have mealworm issues where they dry up, shed issues, death, same with pupae issues. Adult beetles also will eat up the freshly molted beetles from the cocoons

I also save all the sheds and dead bugs and give them to my sister who has a little garden. She mixes them all through the soil. Idk if it helps or not but I like to think it dows

youtubajan I keep them in my basement; low 70s with no extra heat. I change the carrot and bran 1-2 times a week. Good luck!

You might want to think about roaches for feed. In a weird way roaches actually work better, and can eat more scrap type food. In a pinch certain varieties of roaches can eat scrap up alfalfa and free whey. or you can mix it with orange juice and flour/oatmeal in a blender and they eat that to. much better idea then mealworms. id you pick something like dubai roaches they can't breed well unless it's hot. even if you do this outdoors in say the chicken barn or somewhere like that they die off i cold places every where if they happen to get out of the fish tank.
