    A mathematician, a physicist and an engineer were all given a red rubber ball and told to find the volume.
    The mathematician carefully measured the diameter and evaluated a triple integral.
    The physicist filled a beaker with water, put the ball in the water, and measured the total displacement.
    The engineer looked up the model and serial numbers in his "Red-Rubber-Ball" table.

    • @esven9263

      Depends on the type of engineer.
      A mechanical engineer will look up the part in a table because they have to design things with components that are fully characterized for their application and well understood.
      A chemical engineer will weigh the ball, send a sample of it off to a lab for thorough analysis, then infer the volume from the listed density of polybutadiene.
      An electrical engineer will look at it and approximate to the nearest order of magnitude because the volume of rubber has too high of a temperature coefficient to be used in a more precise application anyway. Then he'd spec an expensive, dimensionally accurate, ceramic ball to replace it if it's volume needed to be known.
      A controls engineer would suggest paying the manufacturer's $10,000 a year subscription for their rubber ball system model.
      An industrial engineer will require a sample of a few hundred rubber balls and will proceed to meticulously measure the flashing, sprue, and surface finish on each only to give the answer in units of 25kg bags per 1,000 products.

    Hey francis, there's no need to put in automation to prevent a rocket taking off before the cargo is empty, as the rocket checklist needs to be complete to launch a rocket with automation, and an empty cargo is one of the requirements!
    Edit: I see you spotted this during the video, also regarding your problem with the top of the chimney overheating, it may be simpler to only output water from the end steam turbine on the rows, and use more turbines lower if you want more water

    As we saw with the spiking temps towards the top, the thinner the steam, the more problematic converting it to liquid water with steam turbines will be. I'd imagine in continuous long-term use, steam hitting the top-most turbines will be close to 2000°C of the rocket exhaust. I assume you could brute-force cool steam turbines as one solution. Here are some more thoughts:
    1) Use a non-powered form of steam compression. A bead-pump or a door compressor would create a local vacuum that competes with the open top of the map. You could pre-cool the compressed steam with steam turbines through steel-door-contacts and liquify on the "open end" with a super-coolant loop.
    2) Speed up thermal diffusion along the bunker tiles by rotating supercoolant through them in a closed loop to draw heat at the top down into the "cooler" region of the chimney. A rotating loop of 20kg packets of thermium on a belt would also help with that. That way you could still keep the steam-intake restricted to the top couple of rows of steam turbines.

  • @skilz8098
    @skilz8098 День тому

    I still would have liked to have seen the entire map flooded with liquid steel, yet he already explained that it is doable just that it would take forever. So perhaps on the next playthrough, instead of flooding the map with liquid steel, perhaps try another extreme. Flood the map with nuclear waste. Of course, keep their living quarters, farms, industrial area sealed off protecting it with radioactive shielding materials. This would also kind of force you to have to constantly make radiation pills, as well as radioactive protection suites. I think that would make for an awesome challenge.

    You should really consider closing down the top of the chimney. You can easily do that with a bunch of orGates of the rockets when they're ready to launch and run a wire to the bunker doors. That way you can stabilize the top of the chimney regarding pressure and temp a bit more. Also running coolant through the bunker tiles all the way up and down.
    Consider using the controller station as well because it improves travel time and its way better than in space out to use :D

    Interesting how the maths for "How many steam turbines can one aquatuner support" (12) differs from "How many steam turbines are optimal for a self-contained single aquatuner heat deletion module" (10). Here's an idea if you really gonna fill the entire map including space with water: use Pixel Packs as the Dry Wall replacement if possible. I know they are background buildings, but I don't know if they prevent liquids from escaping into space like Dry Wall would. It would be super expensive to pull off, but it would be super fancy. You could even automate the display depending on which rockets are currently on the planet, how full the water tank is, time of the day and other events.

    assuming that the steamrocket puts out cooler steam then the carg ones i think it would have been smarter to swap them arround with steam to the left and cargo to the right snuggled up to the neutronium. this way the steam can fan out more and looses a lot of heat doing so. this way your buildings should not melt at all (mostly. the important bits like the gas pumps most definitely dont).

    FJ, a couple ideas from my latest chimney;
    I capped the chimney with regular steel mech doors and protected them with meteor blasters. The timing, wiring, and gas trapping is so much better and easier.
    If you seal the STs in an ethanol environment, you can condense the ethanol vapor at the top for better cooling efficiency.
    Using a water collection ST to pull super hot steam past isolated AT/STs can help with thermoregulating super heated steam. The isolated AT/ST steam chamber can be a massive heatsink that can tame hydro rocket exhaust no problem. Place all sensitive equipment like pumps near the water collecting ST.

    I wonder why Francis doesn't, say, use a heat deletion turbine setup to super-chill some coolant down to near freezing, then just run it through radiant pipes and let the steam condense naturally. Wouldn't you delete a lot more heat from the steam that way, running the turbines as hot as possible? You could even chill the chimney wall itself down to something brisk and then pump water out the bottom, right? (or use a waterfall pump to just inject it through to the bottom of the tank?) I'm sure I'm missing some reason why this isn't a good idea, but I can't think of it.

      the Conductive Panel has the same thermal conductivity as a radiant pipe, but interacts directly with the building it should cool.
      On the other hand, with the radiant pipe you have the way: Pipe -> Liquid -> Building, so you get better cooling by adding more intermediate liquid, so this part is greater than one.
      So basically Panel is:
      Pipe -> 1 -> Building

      in normal situation, 2 building cannot exchange their heat, but in wiki, they said "Building Conduction Panel" is same Building Cell but treat panel as a 100 kg cell and divide result by 11", the important part is "divide result by 11", this is why panel is weaker

    I don't play ONI enough to remember why steam rockets make water faster? Is there Hydrogen and Oxygen sources/vents I've forgotten about?

      Rockets don't produce exhaust based on the fuel consumed, but rather at a specific heat and rate

    well, if you wanna maximize water production then introducing more hydrogen rockets is bad. they take up more space, have longer trips, and generate more heat you have to deal with. spamming more steam rockets is clearly the way to go.

    If you've got liquid to spare (ie: a bunch of crude oil and/or petroleum), from some LITE research you can generate steam (as a byproduct) from feeding in hotter and hotter materials. You can boil crude oil into petroleum. The wiki has a confusing (to me) table of outputs.
    Also, don't forget about geotuning water geysers to get more water.

      If he wants to save space for more water, he could move his main power plant to the rocket chimney. There's an outlet _right there_ he could seal off and put inside the chimney and then configure of the steam turbines to dump their load into the planetary water tank.

    It's not like you're lacking in power. Why not just add aquatuners? Three turbines could run two aquatuners with modest net power output, and those two aquatuners would be able to cool three turbines running on 1000C steam.

    For the sake of flooding the map: why not automate bunker doors at the top of the chimney to seal in any steam from departing and landing rockets?
    Edit. I missed the part where you said you are going to extract the steam. Silly me.
    If you then open up the steam rooms you could directly siphon off any steam and dump it into the map.

      @@keonwilson3505 id say its because its pretty hard to time the opening and closing with the constant launch of rockets that plus the fact that most steam will be at the bottom should see about 90% of the steam being collected. Putting in door automtics for maybe 10% and risking it completely messing up the system doesnt look all that worth the extra steam.

    Couldn’t you just add another aquatuner to each of the systems of 12 rather than rejigging it to 9. You’re not short on the resources. Seems like it would be quicker
