This is a very old video. A few reasons for it freezing could be: Emulator not matching the ROM type or a corrupt microSD card. You may be able to find an old archive of the microSD somewhere or through the seller. Not sure.
It's been a really long time since I bought mine. But there was an SD slot under the battery for the firmware and a games microSD on the left side. Maybe double-check the box it came in, the card may have popped out. They are nice little machines and one that got me hooked on handhelds. If the card isn't available, try reaching out to the seller for the game microSD image. If you need to write it to your own card, here are some instructions that can help: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Burn_Image_with_balenaEtcher (there are 2 other options mentioned on that page as well).
Haven't tried slug6.zip, if it won't start it likely needs another .zip file to support neogeo(.zip). But, I've played many other MAME games and they work flawlessly (Galaga, DK, MoonPatrol, several others). If I can locate the archive you mention I'll give it a try and let you know -if I figure it out. If someone else knows, please reply.
I just bought this brand new and alot of the GB Color games play on the regular Game boy emulator with green screen instead of the colors. How do I fix that?
Use the GBC emulator (Gameboy Color), if you don't see any games press A on the two dots ".." until you are at the very top (root) of the folder structure. Then select Media ->the bottom microSD (mine states MMCBLK1P1) -> ROMS -> GBC and now you should see your GBC Color games. When in-game press the middle-center button to get into the options, there you can change the video settings to your preference (make the screen larger, etc.). Hope this helps!
I think this is mostly built into the games themselves, probably not much you can do other than only insert 1 quarter at a time. Maybe someone else can correct me if I'm wrong here.
what's with the rg300 v3 ips firmware, is it different from the v2 in any way? Also do you know how to add emulators and roms (specially to the external card), if so could you do a video of that please?
The v3 firmware came out after I had already been filming/testing for v2, so I've not personally tested that version so did not use that in this video intentionally. When you burn the internal microSD you are installing all the emulators in one shot, so there is no need for a separate video on that (this video covers the firmware upgrade process). When I first received my RG300, I didn't see the MAME emulator as an option. This is what prompted me to try V2 since MAME is the main emulator I'm interested in and figured others would be just as interested. Hope you found the video helpful, it's a little longer than I typically make them but instead of making several smaller videos I wanted to make one to cover everything I've learned. Also makes it easier for the viewer to get all the info. they need.
Copying roms to the external card is simply a matter of removing it from the RG300 and putting it into your computer. Then, copy the roms to the associated sub-folder on the external card. That's really it, very easy.
The RG350 came out about a month after making this video on the RG300 and I couldn't get a hold of one until a month after that. Using frame-skip (auto), you can squeeze a little bit more performance out of it, at the risk of choppy game-play. I then picked up the RG350 and I was hooked, I now have a dedicated page to the RG350 with quite a bit of content: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips As with all of them, something better is always in the works.
Hey i did everything, but im having a problem with gameboy and gameboycolor, even in gambatte or ohboy, if i save and shutdown the game, it wont save, it just save if i exit the emulator then shutdown... its a big mess.. in Regba or other emulators, i dont have this problem? do u have any ideia? could u test (Pokemon games)
I want to purchase one but I am between the RG300 and the GPI case. If you could get only one which would it be? (I love the form factor, which is the only reason I am not going for rg350 but part of me is worried it would be a mistake)
I'm not going to be much help here, I love all 3 myself. That said, the RG300/350 boots in seconds while the GPi case takes almost a minute to boot. If you want to power it on and start playing right away, go with the RG series. If you're the tinkering type, the GPi is great for that. If you want to play PS1 games, get the RG350 (many PS1 games just don't play well on the RG300 as shown in this video). I'm loving my RG350 and have been tinkering quite a bit. If it was me, I'd get the RG350 -personally, if I could only pick one. Check out this page for more info. and video before you decide: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/
@@WagnersTechTalk thanks so much! Yeah i just came across the super retro game handheld 😂 so it got a bit harder. @@WagnersTechTalk Hi Wagner, Im looking for retrohandled and Im having a hard time deciding between all the available choice. I want to mostly play Mame (Gauntlet, Paperboy etc..) Neo-geo game or amiga, atari, C64 stuff. Im not really into PS1 games or Japanese games. So I wonder wich one is packed with the style of game Im looking For. Thanks
It was mentioned in the video, but not demonstrated. Basically, just take the microSD card from the left-side of the unit and put it in your computer. Then, copy the games to the appropriate folder for the games you have. Re-install the microSD in the RG300 and that's it!
Why they included the A/V cable when the unit doesn't even support it is beyond me. This same problem exists with the Pocket Go. If there is some "trick" to get it to work I've not found it.
About the only thing that can cause it is a corrupt microSD card. You can make a backup/clone of your existing card here: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Backup_Clone_a_Drive . But if the image is already corrupt, it won't fix the problem (just won't lose what's on the card). You may need to locate a new image for it but I'd still at least make a backup image first.
Im pleased to see you review the same black translucent early version that i bought..every other youtuber shows the revised beige version..i went through all this 2 months ago but thanks for the recap..everything works with comic firmware..except in my case mame didnt..my roms were not compatible..some do work on the fba320 emulator-about 10% of my arcade roms..i cant get any neo geo roms to start..they all report my romset too old or something..however-neo geo pocket all do..some fussy emulators but all the nintendo is fine and sega too..atari and pc engine no problem either..one or 2 youtubers have mentioned the non IPS screens which suffer some light bleed..ours it seems light bleed is minimal at the sides..the beige ones it seems some are worse..i consider myself fortunate with my choice of older black model..i had no idea of the light seepage when i ordered it..i hardly notice now im used to it..good review wagner..specs
Maybe you can help me, I've the same board version, but when I boot up after flashing and reallocating, I just get a white screen. I flashed the older V1 image from the site and it boots up RetroFW, but it doesn't show any emulators or roms, just the freeware roms like Quake 2 and all that. Downloading the V3 IPS fails after 10mb or so.
I had a similar issue when I flashed the v1 image, all I got was a white screen. I then flashed the v2 image and all was good. You might try re-downloading the v2 image again -maybe it was corrupted. Are you seeing the icons for the emulators but no games or no icons for the emulators? Hopefully you flashed the microSD card under the battery compartment and not the 32Gb card which has the games on it. Might want to take a look at the microSD (External on the left-hand side) just to make sure all the games+sub folders are intact.
Not sure how you're SD card is installed, if you're using a USB reader and have the card installed in that, double check the SD card is slid all the way in. Maybe unplug/re-plug it in and see if it shows up. If you're using an SD card sleeve, remove the SD card and sleeve from the computer and re-seat that. Should show up. If not, check that you can read the contents of the SD card using file explorer. If you can't, something is wrong with the adapter you're using.
I had this same exactly problem and all I had to do was unplug & replug the USB reader and make sure everything was snug and then I was able to continue with the instructions. :)
Most games play quite well, don't have actual framerates to report. Shortly after this unit came out, the RG350 was released and spent much of my time focusing on that device. You can see more here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/
i got the intellivision to work for me on the LDK horizontal. i dont know if there is something different with the rg300, but there are 2 files that i needed to copy into the same folder as the roms. if im not mistaken exec.bin and grom.bin
Awesome Thomas, thank you! The same works for the RG300, copied the bios files ( ecs.bin, exec.bin, grom.bin & voice.bin) to the roms folder for the intellivision and it worked here too. Thank you so much! To find the files, one can search for "OpenEmuBIOSPack".
It is a bit old and not something I've done lately. What I would recommend is that you make clone of the original microSD to a new microSD (here's how wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Backup_Clone_a_Drive ). Then update the firmware in the clone (copy of) the microSD. That way, if it no longer works for any reason, you can always go back to the original. What I did is taped my original microSD inside the battery cover so I never lose it.
Great video! I also did a video on this device. It's a great little handheld. I wasn't aware of the firmware update. I will have to check it out. Thanks for sharing!
Hey I know this video is old but I have the same console it’s practically new but the screen won’t turn on even though it’s working does anyone know why and how to fix it
If it will only turn on when it's plugged in, it's likely the battery or that the battery isn't charged. I assume you've left it plugged in for some period of time. Make sure there isn't anything obstructing the contacts on the battery. I looked up the replacement battery on Amazon, you could buy a new handheld for what they're charging (you may find it on Ali Express cheaper). Not recommending it, but here's the link: amzn.to/3ud6FM5 and no guarantees it would fix the issue.
@@WagnersTechTalk it doesn’t look like anything is obstructed the battery it looks brand new I forgot to add the red light that signals it’s charging will flash and will continue to flash if you plug it in and turn the console on
Still having 2 issues with the new firmware.... - Can't find a working romset for neogeo. - When I try to add a new section, I can't select letters on the virtual keyboard. Also does anyone know which emulator we should use for GameGear roms?
I don't have any TG16 roms (I don't think). It most likely needs some bios .zip or something to go along with it but I'm honestly not sure. Perhaps someone reading your comment here may have some suggestions. If I ever try and get it working I'll reply back here. Very welcome on the MAME aspect, the RG300 is a great little machine!
Ok i see your screen is filthy as well.. thought mine was used, arrived today.. I am scared to clean it in case i then get blamed for scratches.. mine is quite a bit worse than yours.. I sent an email, will see what they say.. How weird to ship an almost $60 item without a plastic over the screen.. they must use non gloved hands to assemble.
It may be that the image that was downloaded wasn't compatible with your exact version. On this page jutleys.wixsite.com/retrogamers97-90 you'll see 3 versions 1, 2 & 3. Make sure you pick the one for the correct version and retry.

whenever I flash the firmware and stick it back in the 300 I just get black screen when I turn it on. I only bought this recently. is that firmware you've linked in the comments still valid?
How can i save in Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green? I tried saving ingame and by using the load and save states but None worked. Everytime i leave the Game and try to Play or again later, i have to restart.
I'm running the latest firmware (described here wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350fw/ ), I went to Pokemon Fire Red started the game and hit the power button (to bring up the menu). Moved down to Saved States, then moved down to "Save to Selected Slot" and pressed 'A'. I left the emulator, when back in did the same to re-load the selected slot and it loaded the last state just fine. This was using the ReGBA emulator. Seems fine here, but again I am using the latest firmware at this point.
I had the same Issue with the firmware mine came boxed with. Flashing my firmware fixed all the issues on all emulators and Roms. I'd highly recommend installing custom firmware, especially as the support is better for it (as of December 2019)
It was my first OpenDingux device, I didn't spend much time on the stock firmware vs the update. So, I can't honestly answer this question. Since then, I've learned to make a backup copy of the stock firmware so you can always revert back if the update causes issues. The update for the RG300 did not cause any issues at the time I applied it, however. Since this video was released, I created a tips page for the RG350 to share what I've learned. Here's how to make a backup copy of your firmware image before trying the update: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/#Backup_Existing_Firmware While it's written for the RG350, it's the same basic thing for the RG300 but you don't remove any screws on the 300, just remove the battery cover and battery to expose the firmware microSD. Hope this helps!
Any idea why most of the console game listings are in chinese? Neogeo and a couple of other consoles show list in english but snes, gb, nes etc. are all in chinese. Is this a firmware issue? The games play perfectly (only got it today) but obviously I have to open every game to see what it is. Can it be fixed or should I return it? Thank you for any help 🤞
Interesting, mine are not. Try this, press the L/R buttons to navigate to the far-right (top) icon. Then the d-pad to the right until you see 'Settings' (yellowish icon on my system) and press 'A'. The first selection is Language, press the d-pad right direction until you see English then press 'Start'. Let me know if that helps.
@@WagnersTechTalk thank you for your quick reply sir. I had to do that as soon as i switched it on as everything was in chinese to begin with. Then all the main icons on the menu were in English but when I went into the individual consoles the files are in chinese. There was also no sd card in the exterior slot and no plastic cover on the screen. Makes me think it might be a "return" that they have sold me. Bought of amazon brand new. Other than that it works amazing!
If the individual files (games) are in Chinese, then yes you may be right that it was a return. If everything is fine, I'd just look for whatever stuff you want to put on it and then add it to the external microSD. You'll find all kinds of tips for the RG-350 (I know, we're talking about an RG300 here but the two are similar in terms of the OS) that might be helpful: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/
so once i downloaded and installed the new firmware, all the emulator bios files are not included, im having to go in and copy them off the old firmware onto the new
Interesting. All I did is copy the games from the internal microSD (under the battery) to my PC, flash the new microSD, then copy the games back on to the new card. The emulator bios was already on the new image when I did it for this video. Although, this is why I recommended not to overwrite the original microSD, never know what they may change in the firmware in the future.
@@WagnersTechTalk thankfully in the event that someone does overwrite the card, the bios files are out there on the internet (not going to link to it for potential legal reasons, but if you were to Google something like gba bios file, you could find it)
V2 has the comic theme and the latest emulator updates. If you have an extra microSD, give V2 a try and I think you'll be happier with it. I didn't even give the pre-loaded firmware a chance, upgraded immediately.

How to Add ROMs and Why Doesn't it Show anything when I put my SD Card In the Computer ? Like no folders No Emulators Will this Firmware work for the Bittboy Or NO ? V 1 or V2 or V3 ?
I don't know which microSD card you're talking about, the internal or external? The internal is used for the OS and a few pre-installed games. The external is where you would typically install your games. If you're talking about games (external microSD), sure you can move that from one device to another. But the firmware microSD, no leave that in-place.
When I first bought the RG300 I was strongly under the impression it had a game cheat code feature , but once I got it I'm not seeing this option. Please don't tell me I've been lied to ?? If it doesn't have the feature I would've never bought it
I don't recall seeing anything on the RG-300 nor RG-350 regarding cheats. You're the first to ask me about it, so not sure at this point. Sorry I'm not very helpful on your question.
Well, I found something of interest, but this is for the RG-350 (not sure if the same .opk will work on the RG300). If you do try this, make a backup copy of the RG300.opk just incase. Well........ it looks like once again I've opened my big mouth before really taking just a little more time to be sure of something. I found a cheat code option in the GBA & GBC emulator last night. Are two sd cards necessary? I mean could roms be in one with firmware? I'm confused, i want to buy this on aliexpress but there are 3 options: single system, single system with extra card and double system with extra card. Now, i see they are promoting those extra card with 10.000 games and so on. Thing is i don't want such big amount of games. I would like 20 tops, and i have bunch of spare sd cards if needed. Could you please give me some advice?
I'll be happy to provide some advice, if you only want 20 or so games then sure you could use the internal microSD. But honestly, it's way more convenient to use the external microSD to copy your games (just pop it out, put it in your computer and back in your RG3xx). If you have a bunch of spare cards, certainly can use them. HOWEVER, since this video was released a newer model came out called the RG350. Depending on what games you may want to play, you might at least want to take a look at it. I setup an entire page dedicated to the RG350 here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/ Hope this helps!
@@WagnersTechTalk Thanks for reply! Well what i'm mostly interested are GBC and GBA games, maybe some arcade some times but i could do without them. PS games are of no interest to me. No problem if i need to put second sd card. So it is o.k. for me to buy basic pack, and just add my card with roms? I mean, it would be senseless for me to give 10$+ for card with games i don't need, if in that card are only roms. But they advertise some o.s. with that card, which i really don't understand what is all about...
OK, now I understand a little better. Yes, there are x2 microSD cards on the RG300 (and on the RG350). There is one internal (which is your firmware microSD and allows the machine to boot), which is removable but under the battery compartment on the RG300. Unless you're updating the firmware, no need to touch that one. Then, there is an external microSD - this is where you install your games typically. You can simply create two folders of "GBC" and "GBA" and copy the games there, then when you launch the emulator select the folder /media/sdcard/GBC or /GBA and the games will play off of your card. Want to add more, just pop it into the computer, copy them and you're good to go. Technically, you could also just copy them to the internal microSD card using DinguxCmdr (See this for a mini-tutorial on how to use it:wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/#DinguxCmdr_Mini-Tutorial , works on the RG300 as well as the RG350).
Sounds good, very welcome! Do check out the RG350 link above -just incase though! It's a little more expensive, but if you ever want to play PS1 games you can (I know you said you didn't, but you may get hooked on this thing). Plus, the page above will also show you how to add all kinds of other gaming consoles and emulators that may be of interest.
Just got this for Christmas and for some reason save states in all the emulators don't work. Some say it saves but there's no data to load. Some say save failed. I haven't used the CFW yet, so I don't know if this fixes the problem.
So I just flashed a micro sd card with the CFW (IPS version) and it works but it removed 99% of the games. There's only a handful off mostly PC games like Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake. But all the GameBoy, Game Gear, GBA etc games are gone.
@@willm5032 It looks like all the emulators are still there but the folders are empty. I'm probably gonna get another micro sd card for the side slot and put my roms on there.
@@kyleschulz7057 that's what I'm planning to do. Let me know if it solves your savegame issue. I'm pretty bummed mine wasn't working out of the box but I already planned on flashing it so it's not a huge issue.

Good question, if you open the back panel and remove the battery you'll see where you install the firmware microSD. Slightly to the left of the microSD slot you'll see something like "RG_300_v1.3" which is the hardware version. I didn't realize this myself until I went digging.
You're right, it is confusing but it worked fine :) Perhaps, because it's not the "1.0" version? Finding technical details about this device is next to impossible. Yes, it has a built-in speaker which generates sound. If it doesn't, it's defective. Could be a wire/connector that came loose. If it's in-warranty/return window, might want to contact the seller and get a replacement- if you don't want to open it up (which would void the warranty). Hope this helps.

So the firmware upgrade won’t fix laggy games (eg, Mario Tennis Power Tour on GBA)? Better to spring for an RG350? Thanks!
Try v2 firmware, if you have an extra microSD. I used an 8GB, but anything 8GB or higher should be fine.

How to add games?
It was mentioned in the video, but not demonstrated. Basically, just take the microSD card from the left-side of the unit and put it in your computer. Then, copy the games to the appropriate folder for the games you have. Re-install the microSD in the RG300 and that's it!

Why they included the A/V cable when the unit doesn't even support it is beyond me. This same problem exists with the Pocket Go. If there is some "trick" to get it to work I've not found it.

Yup. I have the newer IPS version of the RG 300 and all the roms are gone when I flashed the CFW.
Do you know how to get my device out of recovery mode? Without resetting all the data or the external sd card? Very frustrating
I fixed it. Thanks for your help and speedy reply!!

After I flash the img file it does not show up in mini tool? What do I do?
RG_300_1 is IPS version.
How the performance? I means framerate when running GBA,SNES and PS1??

I see this video is a couple years old and I just purchased a RG300 IPS should I still flash the firmware.

Hey I know this video is old but I have the same console it’s practically new but the screen won’t turn on even though it’s working does anyone know why and how to fix it
I also forgot to say it will only turn on if it’s plugged in
If it will only turn on when it's plugged in, it's likely the battery or that the battery isn't charged.

I'd highly recommend installing custom firmware, especially as the support is better for it (as of December 2019)
do the games actually run better with the update? or is it just for changing the look?

I had to do that as soon as i switched it on as everything was in chinese to begin with. so once i downloaded and installed the new firmware, all the emulator bios files are not included, im having to go in and copy them off the old firmware onto the new
Interesting.

I don't know which microSD card you're talking about, the internal or external? The internal is used for the OS and a few pre-installed games. The external is where you would typically install your games. If you're talking about games (external microSD), sure you can move that from one device to another. But the firmware microSD, no leave that in-place.

Hi, in which folder are the BIOS placed?
Are two sd cards necessary? I mean could roms be in one with firmware?
@@WagnersTechTalk Thanks you very much! Then i guess i'll be buying just basic pack with that firmware card and add my with roms.
On GB, GBC and GBA emulators, can i use (and also map) a button to use frameskip function to make games run faster,
I'm not aware of a way to do what you are asking, it would be a great idea though to be able to toggle frameskip via a button!
When you say search openemusbiospack, search where? Google? The files on the firmware SD?
Search the internet for OpenEmuBIOSPack, I used google. In it, there are bios images for a number of consoles.
Just got this for Christmas and for some reason save states in all the emulators don't work. Some say it saves but there's no data to load. Some say save failed. I haven't used the CFW yet, so I don't know if this fixes the problem.
Exact same issue here! Even save games in actual emulated games as well for me.
Wonder if flashing it will help
So I just flashed a micro sd card with the CFW (IPS version) and it works but it removed 99% of the games. There's only a handful off mostly PC games like Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake. But all the GameBoy, Game Gear, GBA etc games are gone.

I've read that it's compatible with some model Nokia phones. So, maybe not as screwed as you might think. I may check this weekend and if I find it I'll reply back here.
@@WagnersTechTalk If you can find a compatible battery (esp. similar amperage) please let us know.
I can't confirm that this will work, I can't even see the battery contacts to confirm they are in the correct location. But, it does reference BP-5L@3.7VDC and similar amperage: www.alibaba.com/product-detail/YOOBAO-Brand-New-Battery-For-Nokia_243759047.html?spm=a2700.7724857.main07.8.2a537a25oKytcZ Of course, it will take about a month to arrive but it might just work.
Wrong.. that precisely the strong point about it. The same model from a Nokia battery will fit.

Has anyone managed to get the video player working?
I tried all kinds of settings using HandBrake to set the video with different codecs, etc. I wanted to be able to show a video playing in this review, but I never could find the magic formula.
@@WagnersTechTalk Me neither, shame as its one of the main reasons i bought it
If you have any luck or find any useful tips, reply back here. I'll do the same.
@@WagnersTechTalk I found out that it isnt compiled properly for opendingux
@@WagnersTechTalk Right mate, im working on a fix for the video player, once its finished ill upload it for you ok.
Are there pre-installed games on this?
So yes, what kind of games?
Depends on where you order it, some do some don't. Unless you're absolutely set on the RG300 I would recommend the RG350 here (RG350 was released a few months after the RG300): wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/ That page will have where to get it and everything you'll likely want to know how to do and more. Hope you find it helpful!
@@WagnersTechTalk Thank you!
How about Aliexpress?
The link for the RG350 on Aliexpress claims to have 15k games. What's on it, you'd have to ask them, I don't know. I ordered mine from RetroMiMi and there were no games on it.
@@WagnersTechTalk Thank you! I have another question. Is the RG300 as big as the 168 in 1?
Don't know what 168-1 you're talking about. Just check the order page of each and compare usually it will have the measurements.
My system doesn't produce sound, only when I put in headphones does it have sound.. any fix?
Yes, it has a built-in speaker which generates sound. If it doesn't, it's defective. Could be a wire/connector that came loose. If it's in-warranty/return window, might want to contact the seller and get a replacement- if you don't want to open it up (which would void the warranty). Hope this helps.
@@WagnersTechTalk thanks, ill try opening it up
Welp i just bricked it, off on switch became loose ish.. i hate my fucking life
Do I Need The Retro 300 ?
lol, how can I answer if you need it? Personally, I'd recommend the RG-350 at this point. You can read more about it here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/ Hope that helps!
@@WagnersTechTalk Awesome I Read up on it THANKS.
Very welcome Matt, glad it was helpful to you!
Yup I want this, being able to play gba on the go and even megadrive is awesome.
It is so much fun to play!

@@pooooo52 Yes it can, see the video above where I show DK Country being played.
@@WagnersTechTalk same with fx chip. What u like better rg300 or rg350
@@pooooo52 I like them both, but I've honestly been spending more time with the RG350.
