    New camera, lights and thermal cam? This new setup looks really nice and much more pro-youtuber like. Love it!
    The results is also quite surprising - didn't expect the effect of motor temperature to be fully negligible. My xnova motors run quite hot but I never felt this has any effect - and it seems I wasn't wrong - but now I'm a lot less worried!

    Thanks for getting around to this. I was very curious about this. I knew the results would be negligible but wondered if they would be noticeable. Thanks again Chris.

    If I recall well Gal Kremer has measured the 2207 to be actually 22,5 x 7,5 mm in size. So quite a big volume compared to a "pure" 2207. Hence the weight, perhaps.

    I don’t think that you should combine motor review with fundamental questions like does temperature effect performance
    The question will be relevant for long as we use motors but review will get outdated fast
    Maybe it should be 2 separately videos
    In long term it would be interesting to have playlist of short 1-5min videos of similar fundamental questions, but if they're combined with reviews they won't be as relevant in a future
    Also great video learned some stuff thanks

    It's pretty straightforward. Resistance rises with temperature which increases the I^2 x R loss.

    good to see these cheap motors perform really well but why isn't really anyone testing/reviewing xnovas motors? would like to see them tested but they perform really well in real flight performance. keep making these awesome vids tho, love watching them :)

    This is such a detailed and well-structured review, I absolutely love it!
    One minor remark: it would be nice if you would explain how to read the graphs for every test. Explain what is shown on each axis and explain what the shape of the curve means.
    I am a scientist myself (molecular biologist) and in my experience it is much appreciated when you take people by the hand and walk them through the graphs. Makes it easier to follow and gives leaves more brain capacity for thinking about the results.

    Oh man the question I wanted an answer to! I thought there'd be at least some loss of thrust at high temperatures but I guess that's one fewer thing to worry about.

    9:24 How would you adjust this in Betaflight?
    If the throttle increases linearly, does that mean, that the rpm also increases linearly (or is it dependent on the load)?
    And does the "motor output limit" in Betaflight only limit rpm or power or thrust?

    • @cinemoriahFPV
      @cinemoriahFPV Рік тому +1

      Motor output limit limits power. The PID FF controller tries to follow the throttle setpoint regardless of load.

    I've rewound motors, have mismatched stator and bell, and mismatched motors all together. Dinged up, glued back together bells after two years of use on Emax eco II.
    Quad works just fine. Tons of noise, but it's MY QUAD!

    I’d love to see similar testing for those of us who opt for 4S batteries due to price sensitivity.

    •  Рік тому

      4s batteries are more expensive per watt of capacity then 6s. all high amp stacks are 6s capable, the motors are the same price no matter the kv. there is no savings running 4s today.

    Question for a future test, does excessive heat in the motors/magnets cause the magnets to lose some of their effectiveness permanently?

    • @ChrisRosser
      @ChrisRosser  Рік тому

      Yes, but the magnets would have to get extremely hot ~90C and usually they don't, it's the motor windings that heat up the most and they don't really suffer for it provided the insulation doesn't melt.

  • @BelovedFPV1

    Is the motor dynamically balanced or statically? If it was balanced by a machine to keep it's balance and the balance does not change or automatically adjust in any way after the balance is made with the mud then it's static right? Similar to to a car tire. The way I heard what you said made me question it. I thought is there is some magic dynamic balancing that occurs in this motor? LOL. I'm amusing this was just a mistake but you can confirm.

    Honestly i hate to say it but i have concerns about the temperature data and your testing method, it seems unlikely to me there was so little effect on performance. Are you possibly using an esc or test bench with some kind of constant voltage/voltage compensation or thermal compensation settings/feature on a controller somewhere that is enabled? Both Nd magnets and coil winding material DO have well documented loss of performance from thermal effects, at 4:10 you show thrust vs power all looking suspiciously similar despite a 93c difference in operating temperature. NdFeB magnets have ~0.11% loss in Br/c (remanence) which immediately puts you at a 10.23% loss of motor output. The thermal effect on copper winding (assuming pure copper and not CCAW) will have an even larger effect on performance, at -18c the resistivity is 1.423×10^(-8) Ω m and then at 75c it would be 1.991×10^-8 Ω m which corresponds to a 28.5% increase in electrical resistance and associated voltage drop. Considering the physical properties of these materials which cannot be avoided regardless of motor type or configuration i can only assume a flawed testing method and hope you might go back and reassess the techniques you are using for data collection. Would be great to hear your thoughts on this.

    Brother I need help Please! i have a 3.5 in quad that was working perfect until i crashed it and broke a motor. i replaced the motor but now the quad acts like i have the motor output limited to 10% . it will arm and it followes the sticks like rocking it back and forth or side to side with the sticks. i have checked everything. all is set right. but no mater how much throttle i give it it is not enough to take off from the ground. i have re flashed everything and tried older versions. checked the esc's in blhelisuit. nothing makes any difference. Do you have any idea where to start> have you ever seen this before? Please help! By the way i build quads for the public so i know what im doing. but this one has me stumped. im to the point of just randomly changing parts. i thought maybe the new motor was weak and the Fc was dumbing down the other motors to match the week one so i took it off and it still does it. it never tries to freak out or anything all seems correct.

    Could you please consider to analyse also "real" motors (under 200KV) that are for things other than toying with drones, or is this an explicit quadcopter-channel ? You analysis is remarkable, but useless for grown-ups... I simply can´t stand seeing so much knowledge and work going to waste. Just a reminder, brushless motors are used everywhere nowadays, just not such like those here, of course... Those motors are just an unsignificant niche, although I like quadrocopters (still nothing a grown-up should waste too much time with, except it´s for research&prevention of climatic/natural catastrophies).
    At best I liked yout silver-wire-episode, despite having no happy-end... ;-)

      @@Finnv893 I used the word "real" in lack of a better word... To make that clearer, I put it in quotations, so that everyone notices, that it´s not meant seriously, instead, just lack of a better term... Of course, they´re all real motors, but I´m looking for lower KV ones.
