I first went to the top of Pikes Peak in 1972, I was 7 years old. My Dad had just bought a new GMC pickup and we borrowed a camper from my uncle. At that time the pavement only went to the entrance gate, it was gravel all the rest of the way. As far as altitude sickness, my Dad, my younger brother and I did just fine. But my Mom collapsed in the gift shop and was given some oxygen for a while. She recovered just fine and we headed back down the mountain. That was the first of probably a dozen times to the top, either by train or vehicle in the years since. Thank you for bringing back some childhood memories.
I love this place! Pikes peak is meaningful to me because it was one of the first mountains of the Rockies I ever saw, when I journeyed across the country on bicycle. 2 years later I drove to the summit! It's like driving up to heaven
took this drive 3 yrs ago with wife and son. was awesome trip. 73 degrees at entrance 43 degrees at the peak. moving to ( the springs later this year )
Thanks for this! I'm headed out there for the first time in August and wanted to gauge how difficult the drive would be. It does look a bit nerve wracking at some points, but I'm thinking I can do it.
I drove a big SUV up there and was finee! It's definitely nerve wracking, but SO worth it!! Make sure you're a little acclimated to the altitude before you go, very little oxygen up there lol
It was worth it! Just got back from vacation in the West. Pike's Peak was awesome. The drive up was interesting to say the least. Stunning views on top!
Very Nice footage. A maybe on our upcomming trip. You mention oxygen issues at the top. How did the lack of it affect you? Understand important to acclimate to altitude first. Tks
You definitely dont want to do this on your first day out there, like I did. I was a healthy 29 year old, and could not walk too fast or get too excited without feeling a little out of breath. So, go on one of your last days, stay calm, and you'll be fine. There is a shop and food up there, so there are plenty staff incase something happens. Enjoy! The ride is amazing and the view at the top is breath taking!
Awesome! I've lived here in the Springs for 3 years, and have so many photos from every time, day or night of the mountains, GOTGs, Rampart Range, etc... I've been wanting to go up Pikes Peaks and get an opposite view. Your video is very motivating, and I will be going up soon. My favourite time is sunset and into the night to capture the stars, landscape, & cityscape. Thank you for posting this!
There are many places better, though I didn't do any hiking.... I think this is perfect for those who wish they could hike up a big mountain, or for those who love a thrill.
You'll acclimate by just being in Colorado. Unless you're hiking Pikes, I wouldnt worry about it. Just know there will be less oxygen at the top, so dont move too quick, stay calm and just think of it as a relaxing time to soak in the views!
I moved here 6 months ago and had horrible headaches and extreme fatigue everyday for months. My doc told me to increase my water intake to help and gave me Naproxen (Did not help) until I was acclimated to the altitude. Took about 3 months to acclimate. But everybody's different. Try by increasing your water intake and bring some Excedrin (This worked best for me).
As long as you dont ride your breaks on the way down, your car should be find. About half way, they check the temp of your breaks to make sure all is okay!
It IS scary, especially if you are not confident in your driving. You commented 4 months ago, so I am guessing there was likely snow in the area... I would have turned around too!
@@austinconant8476 glad you saw because I have forgotten! Lol but it was a fun and beautiful ride. Not much oxygen at the top 🤣 Relaxing up there and taking in the views was amazing.

I do want to go back and take the train. Also, if that road was gravel, I would not have done it! That is scary! lol

We drove up it several years ago and it was definitely worth it. The views are fantastic.
Very well put together. Thank you so much

We drove up it last summer. Quite the experience.
I drive this road daily for work and it's still worth it.

BEAUTIFUL and thrilling drive, with phenomenal views at the top. Next summer you should 100% do itA
Gonna try this in an 08 Prius!...hope it makes it.
Thank you for the video
How long did it take to climb the mountain ?
Wow now that was a hell of a drive. I don’t know if I could do it. Thanks for the ride up but I am walking down.
joemc111 you can always take the train
why? I would take a silvia and slide through the turns (when there are no cars) but it is illegal so imma not do it
between Trail Ridge Rd, Rocky mountain National park and or this, is it better, worth it?
There are many places better, though I didn't do any hiking.... I think this is perfect for those who wish they could hike up a big mountain, or for those who love a thrill.
pfhhh,thats one nice ride.
I don't get why you are scared?
I want to drift on the twisty roads but that is kinda illegal so no. Also they hold hillclimb races there you should watch them if you want idk
Any tips on how to prevent altitude sickness? I’m from somewhere where I’m sea level

Is this more or less scary than trail ridge road?
Pretty similar but I would say this is slightly scarier.
I drove 900 miles from Minnesota just to drive the 19 miles to the top and it was the best 19 miles I have ever put on a vehicle 😂😂😂😂
Hey very nice video! I’m going there probably next week. 2200 miles of driving xD.
Jealous!! Enjoy! Colorado is amazing. Hope you're going through Utah!! That state is beautiful!!
Snap•Travel•Chew Travel Vlogs what camera did you use? It’s very clear.
@@ybkrnmusic just my go pro. I have a mount on the hood of my jeep 😎
Snap•Travel•Chew Travel Vlogs 👌 I will try that next time. ✌️

Guys if you are scared there is also a train
Since you didn't get behind someone going really slow, I assume you had at least 5 cars stacked up behind you.
