Very creative with talking to yourself on the stairs. I’m no videographer, but I’m guessing good editing software makes that possible. If only Ealing Studios and Alec Guinness had that when they shot Kind Hearts and Coronets; it would have made the scene where all seven characters played by Sir Alec appear on screen simultaneously much easier. As it was, it was a technical marvel at the time. I had never heard of Imperial Wharf.
It's nice to see some lovely improvements to the area. Wasn't expecting them, but very welcome. I guess you have to take the Hackney Ups with the Hackney Downs.
@@TransportofPerth Likely two shots were recorded at the same position back to back, cut in half down the middle of the stairs, and spliced together. You can kind of tell by looking at the sky behind him
Out of the 3 Hackney Stations, Hackney Downs has to be my favourite, was only using the walkway between Central and Downs last week while in London. Love the Geoff and Jeff Clone (Thanks to UA-cam automatic subtitles) interaction as well. Love video Geoff.
@@ukrailspotter21 I'd say Homerton is also one, even though it doesn't have the word Hackney, it's still in Hackney and it's between both Hackney Wick & Hackney Central
My wife and I did the walk between Downs and Central most weeks when she was pregnant to get to Homerton hospital. The walkway felt longer and longer the further along the pregnancy we got.
I never comment really on things generally but thanks for the effort with the video production Geoff (and with graphics in other videos where you're explaining stuff), it's really lovely to watch :)!
Well, once again, thoroughly entertained AND nicely informed for the whole vid. Creative flair is strong with this one.! Corrected my ashamed lack of subscription to the channel...
Hi Geoff. What a fab vid! Thanks a zillion. I don't live in London - three months in 1977 was sufficient! (London's a great city but I can't stand urban areas) But your vids are interesting, informative and entertaining; Lord Reith would have been delighted, no doubt. But your video is also a fab lesson for You-Tubers in artistic possibilities. Whilst I'm here, I have watched many of your vids and you are never short of being superb; thank you.
This video could have easily been a few shots of the stations with a few descriptions, but it is clear that each shot is carefully considered, the sound is well mixed and edited, and technically simple but well executed visual effects add to an already polished film. Geoff, are you trained in film-making or are you an autodidact?
About time that TFL updated its "Avoiding Stairs" tube map for new lift openings, the Elizabeth Line and the Overground. Including the Thameslink would also be good. They could also remedy the omission of the cross-platform interchange at Finsbury Park and include the GN electrics at Highbury & Islington. For some inexplicable reason, the new tube map shows the Cambridge Line of the Thameslink (rather than the GN line) and the stations at New Southgate, Oakleigh Park and New Barnet, when the Thameslink doesn't stop there most of the day even though GN does. It also shows the Charing Cross Branch of the Northern Line as the connector to the Victoria Line, when it should be the Bank branch Truth be told, disabled access on mapping and station signage needs a bottom up change. I have been looking , this week at central London interchanges by visiting them, and most are unfit for people who have difficulty walking long distances, or people with luggage. In many cases more than one lift is needed and the signage between them is non existent. On the other hand, the obsession with completely level access to the train (as in the "Step Free" tube map) and the ignoring of huge distances on the flat appears to be a huge omission by TFL. The reference to distances on tube maps is selective and inconsistent. Many of the stations are really separate rather than interchanges. Harry Beck needs to unsolder all his joins. As for the hash they made at the lift interchange at Custom House by increasing the walking distance by over 1000% by putting a one-way gate line in the way; it is inexplicable. National Rail, as well as TFL have a blind spot for signage. Try and find platforms 10a, 11 and 12 at Stratford and then when you have found the stairs, try and find the lift access. Stratford is an awful interchange. I hope that once the Elizabeth Line goes through in November that mapping can show the cross-platform interchange between Elizabeth and Central lines as well as the DLR on platform 3a. The current connections between Central and Elizabeth lines at Liveropool Street and Tottenham Court Road are ridiculous. I assume that most National Rail station improvements are funded by the Government rather than TFL. I think that the only part of the Overground owned by TFL is the East London Line.
Love this content! Still my favourite. Portraits of stations or (more general) Transit Passenger Infrastructure. And not only of the Underground of course, but all of the TfL / London Railway Transportation realm. And how fitting that this was funded by the DfT as it is the Overground, which is part of the NR system (as is Cross TfL ElizzaRail of course).
Can you do an episode on the London necropolis railway. Tom Scott did it but didn't show much just a description. I bet you could get more access to where it ran and all its stops maybe even find an old train that ran the line even if it's just a museum piece. 1st 2nd and 3rd class funerals were run on the line and so much more right there in London. I'd love to see more
I always think London Marylebone could do with a second entrance on Rossmore Road. It would free up congestion on the main concourse, and could be constructed quite easily with a concourse sitting above tracks of platforms 2-5 with a gateline level with the street and stairs and lifts down to the platforms.
Worth Pointing out that the Walkway between the two Hackneys is not an entirely new thing. One existed until 1944 when the original Hackney Station (North London Line) closed.
Good luck with the new entrance at IW...covered walkway but bare stairs and platforms, no canopies or shelters. Should be great fun in the winter or any other time when inclement weather arrives! Don't think anyone will be spreading out along the platform then...
Unrelated question to the video. I went to London last weekend and I noticed where we stayed Piccadilly trains ran through district line stations near Hammersmith but my question is why don’t Piccadilly line trains stop at all stations along that way when they have platforms to do so ?
Stamford Brook, Turnham Green and Chiswick Park have Piccadilly line platforms for early morning and late night trains. Piccadilly line trains can stop if there are works on the District tracks. Otherwise on this stretch of the network the infrastructure allows the District line to act as a local service while Piccadilly can use the fast inner tracks, which help get people to the airport promptly. There may be some reconfiguration of this arrangement in future with regards to Chiswick park, once much needed new trains are placed on the Piccadilly line.
But hang on though, they had covered cycle storage facilities for years and years at Leytonstone Underground Station (Church Road exit) and I think there was also one at Walthamstow Central. The Council and TfL teamed up to put them there. I think most of the Waltham Forest Stations got them. I'll be surprised if they aren't still there.
Use the connecting walkway between Hackney Centrsl and Hackney Downs which is a great addition to Hackney, before that I would walk between the stations which I could do in 4 minutes as I walk quickly, but I can change quicker now with the walkway.
I‘d love to see you do a video where you feature all the underground stations of the overground. So little footage online, especially Dalston Junction. But maybe that’s just my obsession with underground stations talking (which you kindled btw). Much love
@geoffmaeshall so Romford has new lifts and entrance on the Elizebeth line but interestingly I don’t think they made London overground platform step free only the the Elizebeth line and greater anglia platforms
There should be mor eof these connector corridors on the Overground etc. The Cricklewood - Kilburn complex but most notable the Catford and Catford bridge neighbours.
It’s always such to see a new video. I feel like I know all the shots and the signature Geoff-isms like that camera placement near Stairs or BINAUGURATION.
Very busy, and yet for many years the line had no passenger service, and before the wartimelosure the trains went to poplar; to get to Stratford you had to change at Victoria Park.
Geoff, you have shown the walkway, when you tried to visit all then-112 Overground Stations in the fastest time. You showed yourself using the walkway to go from one Hackney to the other.

Neatly not talking over your better self on any of the fun new shots to obsess over. Great job Geoff and other Geoff!

This "Geoff" guy seems nice. You should do an episode of Choo Choo Chat with him.

I once stayed at The Travelodge at Hackney Central and got the best room possible, it overlooked both railway lines and was a suite size room!
Great to see these sorts of improvements highlighted! Would be lovely to see a video like this to show the remodeling at March station.
A March station? Then what the hell do Cambridgeshire residents do the rest of the year? Seems a bit shortsighted to me . . . .
Thank you for the video Geoff that was very interesting. Where I live in Hertfordshire the some of the trains do stop at Hackney Downs.
I love watching your videos Geoff, they make me smile 😀
I can see why there is no wide aisle gate on the new Imperial Wharf entrance but a new gateline without a wide aisle must be rather rare these days.
