[Computer] TRS-80 Model 1, Level II
    Emulator: MAME 0.215
    Rating: 5/10
Wow, I always wanted to play this growing up... but what I saw were remakes and graphically enhanced versions. And now that I get to play the original on TRS-80, I can say is that it's not nearly as refined as the remakes -- but actually not too bad. Sure the graphics are minimal, but it all takes place in your mind anyway. The manual details the room descriptions, the treasures, the monsters, etc. The computer is more of a "board-game"-esque presentation, and tells you to consult the manual for all the really juicy details.
Rich environment, combat system, plenty of rooms to explore... I can see how it captured the imagination of many in 1979 - being as close to a D&D like game you could have running solo (just you & the computer). It is hard to play today, as it is quite slow, there is no real save system to speak of... and the kicker for me is there is no storyline. The only goal seems to be exploring and amassing wealth and items... which has its intrigue, but I like games with story and an end-point.
Kudos to being a terrific example of early dungeon crawler game in the D&D tradition... but not much more for me here after having become familiar with how it all works. The Apple II version did improve on the graphics in the presentation, but I like the crisp clean text on the TRS-80 better than the weird blurry font in Apple II Hi-Res mode.

Man, this was one of my favorites on the TRaSh-80 I had back in high school. Later fell in love with the very similar "hacK' game on the college's Unix system which was purely ascii based.

Oh yeah... the "hack" or "rogue" games really captured my attention too. And they were a lot more playable than Temple Of Apshaii on TRS-80... simply because they moved much more quickly. Good stuff.

oh man, 1982's "Shamus" was such an improvement over this.

Haha... I know. Feeling that way myself these days... when my early gaming memories are well before the NES!

@@DukeCannon - wow. Yeah, I used to type in some programs in the early days of my C64. Those were desperate times.
