I know its been a long time since you postd this video, but would a follow up be possible ? It would be nice to see how it look now ! Love your pond videos !!
Appreciate videos like this Chris. Get on youtube to see what you have posted lately and learn something in the process. I have always wondered what exactly they did to keep water to hold in a new pond and now I know.
Any insight as to why it was leaking? Was the clay high in sand, or did you find a sandy layer? I'm getting ready to dig my own pond and would appreciate any tips on what to look for. I know the clay on my property holds water very well, as any hole I dig gets filled up and stays full. But it would be my luck to dig a 3/4 acre hole and have it NOT hold. I know I should stack back some good lining material in case I do hit a sandy spot and need to seal it, but is there anything else I should look for? I'd really appreciate your input if you have it. Thanks. I really enjoy your channel!
I've used Bentonite for a leak in my own pond, it worked. Earlier this summer when we had a drought the pond level was about three feet low and I could see the Bentonite, my goodness is that stuff sticky and soft, I made a mistake and took a step onto it and nearly lost my boot as I sank. I'm sure what you did will fix the problem.
Yes, would sure like to see what it looks like when it's full and if the sealing did a good job. You sure do good work. If we lived close, I think I'd have you do some work for me even if I didn't need it. I live on the west coast.
As for the kitty litter comment, I put some in a mulch pile with leaves. I soaked the litter and leaves with the hose. I tried to mix it all up with the tine rake. What a mess. It'll be a while before that litter blends in with the leaves. It really clumps just like it says it does. I think parts of it will always be stuck together.
did you ever make a video of the pond after it filled up with water? interested to see if this technique worked for this particular pond. bentonite is some good stuff for this application.
You should check out the fled bag. It’s a valve that you stab into the bottom of the large sacks. So you would be able to do one section and shut it and then move over and do another one without waste.
Well, if there's sand under the rest of the area as well, it'll absorb rainfalls like mad, thus not leaving much water to run to the pond, that could have been part of the problem too. That said, it would be nice to have a follow up video after a rainfall in the near future to see how well it holds the water that does get into the pond. If you have the time for it, offcourse. :)
Ok thanks. I have a 1/4 pond that fills to a certain level, then back drains way down. Had the base dug up and found no indication of why it drains. No rock below. No water leaking outside the dam. Can't get it to fill completely. Thinking about trying bentonite.
When we Beninited pond we cut the Bottom to grade and slopes, the take a Rottiler mix Beninite into material, then compact with a Wagner Compactor or Cat Compactor
I hope that sealed to after all that work. You know I'm surprised that pond wouldn't hold water.. I mean it looks like that was a lot of solid clay you were digging up.

I have heard of this but never actually done it or even seen it done..Ther was a job I declined years ago because it was not suitable for a pond, "static water level was too low and it was sand" someone else dug it and the spent a wad and used this stuff and its stil a wet spot in the sand LOL!
It's too shallow, again, imo. And if it has that sticky gooey bentonite in it I guess it's not going to be a swimming hole either? Me, I'm just a guy who would want to fish in one of the ponds, if I could afford one, which I can't. And apparently these shallow ponds you dig are also expensive as heck. I'd just like a pond with some water depth to it. A pond needs a depth of at least fifteen feet, imo. Catfish like deep water don't they?
highly HIGHLY do not recommend mixing any lime in the pond after setting the bentonite. This will make for a disaster by flocculating (kinda like milk curdling) the clay and is virtually non treatable afterwards. just saying.
As interesting as your "how to" and your other "informational" are, I think most of us would watch much longer videos if you put them up! - - I guess you get paid on the number of hits on a video, instead of how long you keep a viewer entertained!! - - If that is the case, I understand why you don't teach us more. - - - Thanks for, at least sharing the information that you do share!!!
I guess if you want a 12" pond, sure. No way that will support fish in the winter, much less summer when it hits 90 plus degrees. What a waste of time...

Any chance you could do a follow up on what the ponds like now?
Did you take a video of that pond later after it filled up with water? Would like to see what it looks like now. Thanks for sharing your video.

One trick is to put pigs in it and they create silt that will seal the leaks. After they've finished you can have a pig roast.
check with a local well drilling company they should be able to tell you. its about 10 bucks for a 50 lbs bag
I think its more of a lack of water shed. But they was a layer of sand I found in the bottom that may have been the problem?

Can you use this fix for a pond for horses?
its all in my other vids?

Was this method successful? Do you have any pictures of the pond holding water? I am having a problem with a pond and considering bentonite to fix it.
+rpuco as far as I know it was, I had not heard anything back about it not working
Can you use Bentonite Chips? Or powder? I work for a drilling company and we don’t have that type of bentonite.
Time and materials
How’s it working now?
I have a 10 acre pond down here in mexico that leaks to its sides, i use it to give my cattle water, will the bentonite do any harm to my cattle?
how did you price a job like this? the bentonite expensive? gotta guarantee it? nice job

Is that the leftover stuff you had from the other Lake you guys did the batknight
I now have 2 pallets of Sodium Bentonite and waiting to buy another 3 more. I am also hauling clay when possible in my F250.
not a very deep pond?
i need some bentonite for my pond project where can i buy it in bulk form and how much is it...give me some ideas please
How does it look now days?
How much did all that bentonite cost? I'm looking to use that on my pond.
Did it work? Does the pond hold water?
did you ever make a video of the pond after it filled up with water? interested to see if this technique worked for this particular pond. bentonite is some good stuff for this application.
Any news on how the pond turned out?
Is it common to have a 3 foot deep pond with a flat bottom?
I know this is 4 years later, but yes. They're called duck ponds.
if youre walking on the dirt when theres water in the pond will you sink into the bentonite slightly?

Chris, how many days did it take you to finish this project?
how deep is this pond? Would you have dug it deeper if it was yours?
Nice grading Chris, "if" you ever got out of the private construction, would you ever consider the oilfield? Just curious.

Did this repair the pond?
I need someone to do this on my very small pond in Tennessee. What do I search for online to find someone? Thanks. Great job!

So neat watching tou do these ponds.
Nice video. Can we see the equiptment u drive or own plz.
Nicely done dude. Was that all in one day?
When we Beninited pond we cut the Bottom to grade and slopes, the take a Rottiler mix Beninite into material, then compact with a Wagner Compactor or Cat Compactor
Very nice! You do quite clean work my friend!
Now is the time to build a small dock.
thanks! Im working on a day to day progress on a 2 acre pond Im building
nice job. we like to rotary hoe the bentonite in and it gets a real good seal.
well is there any video of how to eliminate a pond ... i dont want it but i dont know how to get rid of
How it is leaking?
rolling it out with a compactor w/ a smooth drum will help especially with clay
Can u show the part of u digging
I hope that sealed to after all that work.
You know I'm surprised that pond wouldn't hold water.. I mean it looks like that was a lot of solid clay you were digging up.
yeah this pond has no flowing water going into it just runoff.

I bought some Bentonite at 10 dollars a bag and had 20 bags for a small pond, but it wasn't near enough I guess.

I hate bentonite I have just spent 2 weeks cleaning it out of a diff and final drive on one of our machines.

Interesting process
Good job mate
awesome vid
Good Chris i enjoyed that

so the bentonite is like kitty litter
yeah its some nasty stuff when you get it wet! lol
why not use clayliner...just mix clay bout 30%water..
Bentonite is clay. He put a clay liner into that pond.
day and a half by myself
Funny how much your dialect has changed over the years...🙂
Thanks for the reply.

Thanks Chris!!!

thanks

+Scott Burden This is in the Deep South where freezing is not much of a problem.
It will be a wet hole with weeds at that depth.
😀😀😀😀😀
people putting stupid ponds by their house must love mosquitoes, i don't get it.
Your accent was thicker back then.
fish in pond
You saw fish in there? What are you smoking?

Nice work, letsdig18! :-)
