I first tied the Blanton's Whistler (a.k.a. The Flashtail Whistler) way back in 2009 when headed to Canada for some early season Northern Pike fishing. Not only did it catch the pike I found if I got the fly down about 8 to 10 feet I was picking up four and five pound Smallmouth! It has become a staple in my box whenever I am in "big fish" waters. It is a straightforward fly to tie and I am surprised there are not more videos on it. This is the basic version I was introduced to but if you do a search on the Internet you will find other material and color combinations that I think would fish well also. I mentioned in the video an article by Don Blanton (the originator of the pattern) and I have included the link below. - Enjoy

Hi Ian, Happy New Year! Excellent video as always. Thanks a lot! Could you do a tutorial on the Murdich Minnow? Stay safe, and have a wonderful 2021!
I certainly can. I will put it on my list and try and get it out in the next couple months. Thanks for the suggestion. - Ian Anderson

Great looking pattern, thank you for sharing. What brand of alcohol based head cement are you using? I have been trying to find something that doesn't build up but penetrates and dries quickly. Love all the back ground history of the flies you tie it gives the life.
Steve, thanks for the compliments, always nice to hear. I use Fly-Tite which is Alcohol based. It does penetrate very well which is why I like it. It also is thinner then most head cements and can be poured directly into a small applicator without thinning. Plus, if you need to thin it just a little bit of denatured alcohol does the trick. No harsh chemicals. - Ian Anderson
