Charlie, these were good fixes. I think my favorite was the blue stripe dress. The little gores on the neckline not only fixed the too big neck, but adding that solid color at the top made the side panels a better fit, visually. Well done!

I also pretty much only clean my machine when it starts acting funny, so when the stitches are wack I'll dust it and when it starts making funny noises I'll oil it😅

... does oil stop the noises? I clean the machine whenever i get annoyed with how it looks (which is relatively frequently) but i've never oiled it

I'll admit...I cleaned my decade-old sewing machine for the first time in December (I don't sew often). It wasn't near as bad as that one. The reason I cleaned it? It was getting tangled up. The reason is I had to. It told me I had to. So...yeah...
treat your machine like the girl you're dating is the ultimate guide i can give to anyone using one
give her some gifts (like new needles, presser foots, oil, etc.)
cuddle and stroke her nicely (clean her please)
talk to her nicely (literally)
give her time (don't hurry while sewing, it's a process that needs patience)

Okay, I've been working on adding pockets to ONE of my dresses, and I've had to redo them twice already because I keep messing them up, and long story short? I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one who takes forever about dealing with repairs.
Ah yes, remembering to clean your machine! I costume for theatre and quilt as well, so after every big project I try to remember to dust out the machine. Only when working in faux fur do I clean it more often - because faux fur is the devil.
I think my favorite fix was the blue stripe dress. The triangle gore at the neckline was not only genius but also works really well with the rest of the color blocking of the dress. I loved what you did with the "penguin dress" - the top you got out of it is also very attractive. And the dress you turned into separates - I love the top, not so much the skirt (I'm not a short skirt girlie), but I could see adding another tier or widening the tiers of the skirt to make it at least 4 inches longer. For the coveralls the only way the patch wouldn't have looked a bit odd is if you meticulously pattern matched to make it blend as much as possible. But since this is your "gonna get messy and PAINT" outfit, pattern matching might be a little too ...extra.
Love it all! And yeah, the FIX IT pile is always a drag to do anything with. As for the cherry top that is still oddly sized, I say scrap it. The material is clearly not working for you in that particular project.
I owned my sewing machine for nearly 20 years before taking it in to be cleaned and serviced the first time... you're doing fine!

My grandmother had her sewing machine serviced after YEARS of never having done it (this was probably in the 1960’s or 1970’s, way before I was born, lol), and when she got it back she called my mom to say she thought it wasn’t working correctly, because it wasn’t making any noise! 🤦🏼😂🤣
I just took my Great Grandmother’s 1947 machine to be cleaned. I had it for 30 years (of not much sewing) serviced. It’s so happy now.
I love the combo of the cherry halter and the red pants as an outfit!! Also I love seeing people gp back and fix the slight mistakes on their garments they made.

Every one of these was an excellent upcycle! As I've gotten older (74 next month--yay me!) I've decided I like buying clothes at the thrift store and upcycling them more than making things from scratch. I finally got my sewing area set up (my Living Room) and now I need to lose at least 10 Lbs before I tackle the piles of things I want to upcycle--but I'm working on that, too!
Maybe some ruching with elastic thread across the back of the cherry fabric halter top? Would look super cute, shouldn't take long to add the lines of elastic thread, and would combat the stretch of the waffle weave fabric.
You inspire me to continue working on my stack. I’m working on making regular trousers fit my petit size. One down….perfect fit. Now I’m machine quilting all those baby quilts in my stack of quilt tops. Two of six done. That was in one week. Wish I had your energy. Love you alterations.
Nothing has inspired me to try to get back into sewing like your videos. The way you own your mistakes and keep things budget-friendly makes it so much more approachable. I also got a laugh from the subtitles on this one!
Have you 3d printed anything useful for sewing? I've got a resin printer stashed in the garage that I keep thinking I'm going to use for sewing tools, but it's such a PITA that I haven't bothered yet.

I've not personally done much sewing, or 3D printing to be real, but the immediate thought I had was a bias tape maker. You run fabric through this little chip-clip shaped doohickey and it pulls the sides together evenly for you to iron as you go. Morgan Donner used it in her most recent 'quilting out of a book of samples' video!
Alright, the final version of the former-dropped-waist pale yellow dress is soooo cute! And the stripey one is great!
Love the puppy shenanigans and the remark about the space looking like there's a toddler living in there. I always have to clear the camera's line of sight of the random toys left there by human kiddos :))

YAS on the two piece - you could just tack in a light floating liner - or making it in another fabric would be cute! Also, the red trousers did look very nice!
Also, you should embroider a little through that patch on the coveralls to keep the fabric from shredding more underneath. Cute embroidery will help reinforce it all.

My best discovery for cleaning out lint is using small makeup brushes! if you have a few you dont use anymore the fluffy ones get a lot while the smaller ones can reach and pinpoint lint spots. :)

I've been so cold lately and that is just cozy goodness. I have ∅ sweatshirt material clothing and am feeling the lack.
This is excellent timing as I just finished the 2 years of sewing video. If the yellow jumpsuit continues to shred, just lean in to the patches and check out visible mending and pattern darning. Having done that sashiko exploration, pattern darning will be super easy.
Yeah, now I have added "clean my machines" to my to-do list for this week. 😂 Love the alterations and the puppy footage.

I mostly use vintage sewing machines which will practically last forever if you keep them clean and oiled. I do try to clean and oil right before starting a new project. That works really well for me when I manage to stick to it. At the least, if the machine has been sitting for a while, I clean/oil before using and if I’ve been sewing regularly… once a week. I have been that person who only cleaned the machine when there was a problem and never oiled. General clunkiness and machine problems are greatly reduced since I learned to do those basic servicing tasks myself and the best benefit of fresh oil in a vintage machine is the overall sound reduction. ❤

ive spent my free time the last couple days working through minor fixes ive had set aside FOREVER (and a major redesign of a cute shirt i accidentally acquired 3 sizes too small.) and its really fun to watch someone else do similar!! it feels sooo good to get to put stuff ive been wanting to wear forever back in my closet all fixed up

My Aussie cross pupper destroys destroyable toys, so they stay stored out of reach until we're going outside to play together (plus she has frisbees put Out Of Reach except for frisbee playing). If I put 2 frisbees and a toy on the floor for her to choose which one we're going to go outside to play with, she'll pick up her plastic frisbee, put it down so that it's somewhat stacked on top of her flexible nylon frisbee, and then try to pick both up...
(sometimes works for her, sometimes doesn't)
I know by the time this comes out, you'll probably be in the middle of other projects, but I'd love to see an embroidery update video. I've been doing a lot of embroidery, and your videos inspired me to do it.
I know nothing will be complete, and maybe there's not enough progress for a full video, but I'd love to see how your fantasia and beauty and beast pieces are going!
Maybe a tips video for planning a big project like those two?
I low key would love to plan my own fantasia projects and do a night at Bald Mountain inspired piece, or even the sorcerer's apprentice.

Great fixes. When I do that, I look at the pile and think: ouch, too much work! But, when I begin, it's finished in no time and... a lot of new garments! I loved your video, now I feel encouraged to address my own pile of fixes.
There's a much faster way to unpick seams, actually! Insert the ball into the seam, and then you can push right through the stitches. It's beautiful and sooo satisfying 👌
So good to know others struggle with motivation to address the less than happy projects. I have ......, way too many!

The current one might make an amazing 2pc swimsuit cover.
The skirt, as it's a little see-through, would also make a great petticoat when you want extra volume under a swooshie skirt or dress.
Adding the extra pieces to the neckline of the blue and white striped dress has really transformed it.
Yes you need to for sure clean the lint more. I clean mine almost every time I sew. At least in the bobbin area. Does your machine need oil?
It won't need oil - it's very much of Singer's plastic gearing era, which actually isn't that bad because those gears are stronger than the modern base metals they use.

When my mother's used to sew or if someone was borrowing my machine I would get it serviced. Cleaning, oiling the full deal. The store I used to go to no longer exists (Bloor West Village in Toronto Canada) but there is another one in Etobicoke that I plan on trying.
"What am I supposed to do with this felt plate inside the bobbin case?" It doesn't have felt! My pearls were clutched so tightly. I hope you oiled it as well. Servicing and cleaning are two different things. Usually you clean and oil things every 8 hours of sewing or so. But like flossing your teeth, only do it if you want to keep it for a while.
Most modern machines do not need to be oiled.
@ElizabethChronis It depends. A lot of machines at big box stores and those geared for everyday sewers don't need oil, but straight stitch machines generally do. Basically anything designed for heavier use.
@@ElizabethChronis You are probably correct, so sorry. I forget that modern machines are designed to be thrown away in a few years. After my horribly expensive modern one died, I said never again and bought a 1962 Singer 500a “Rocketeer”. Then several more vintage machines because I love how they sew and they can be easily fixed. Metal on metal requires oiling. Plastic does not.
Link reminds me so much of Bear (my dog) the way he plays and the way you interact with him. Also you fixing all these things are inspirational for everyone else to figure out how to fix something

It's so great to see how many people are are doing (or inspired to) mending/ fixes right now. I started working on my pile 2 weeks ago. It's slow going being a stay-at-home mama of a 4yo. But I have my first ever cruise in 3 months and feel very inspired. My projects to make list is also 12 items longer! 😂😂

P.S. I'm not a pearls clutcher but that was a scary moment opening your machine. Definitely recommend regular cleaning. I'll absolutely drop you reminders every few months to keep her safe. okay. professional servicing should be yearly, but if you're a daily sewer then you should remove the lint crap every month, especually in newew machines where you cant take the whole thing apart to clean it! so a monthly reminder on your phone telling you to just remove the lint buildup will orolonge the life of your machine. you should oil it every 2-3 months. luckily I don't have pearls to clutch, because I think I would of strangled myself with the force of that😂!!!!!!

I never accomplish more than when I am trying to avoid doing something. Like, tell me I need to do x, and I will do the whole alphabet of tasks before I will consider it.
Kudos to you for fixing your disappointments. If something I create doesn't turn out exactly like I imagined it in my mind, I never want to see it again. I literally spent weeks hand embroidering the yoke of a shirt, and hated it so much, I gave it to my cousin to "wear when you slop the pigs." It became her favorite shirt to wear to the dances.
WOW! Adding the little gussets to the shoulders of that navy stripe dress was the right call! Elevated it so much!
To avoid situations like this, I've got a set of things I must do before scissors touch fabric on a new project: 1) finish last project or declare it beyond my skills and put it in the UFO box. 2) mend at least one thing on the mending pile, fixing the button that popped off my wok pants doesn't count towards this... 3) pick out one item from the stuff in the UFO/Revisit pile and either finish it or revisit it in the hopes that my skills have caught up with my dreams 4) return 1D6 pairs of socks from the darning pile to active service. So far so good, the UFO box is no longer overflowing, the mending pile is no longer in danger of damaging anything if it toppes over and I always have work socks without holes in them....
Hope you get your studio sorted soon. I'm lining stuff up to finally finish mine. Still aboiut six square feet of flooring to install but I have to move some stuff out of the way and figure out what I'm doing with it... So I'm procrastinating by doing an onion skin dye on wool suiting to make a Victorian Walking Skirt, which will probably be finished before I get my craft space set up :P

Loved these! Such a good reminder to go back and tweak things that didn't quite work. A suggestion for your studio if you are not past it when this video went up: paint all you trim before you install it then touchup what ever needs some TLC. Much easier than priming and painting the trim after it is in. (Of course i don't have 10 yo bare wood trim in my house. Pish posh, who could even think such a thing? 🤫)
I think the best options for that adorable 2 piece set are lining it or wearing nude (or the closest color to your skin tone) undergarments and/or bike shorts. Bloomers under the skirt would also be cute if that’s a look you like but they could easily be hidden if they’re shorter than the skirt (and they could be sewn in). They’re also ridiculously easy to make.
I keep a can of compressed air by my sewing machines for a quick, easy clean when things start to get dusty.

Using compressed air can actually do more harm than good because it pushes the dust and lint deeper into the machine and it adds moisture causing rust and corrosion.

I would try laminating the cherry fabric with another fabric, to stiffen it. You could also make a liner/slip for the see through skirt. Congratulations! Amazing amount of success!

A good way to fix the back of the cherry halter is to add elastic shirring! Perfect for that kind of fabric and problem.
OMG! Those little tail wiggles! And yay for repairing things! and yay for deciding one piece just wasn't worth the fix. That happens. I'm also really glad the red pants were saved!

Ohhh, I almost cried when I saw your machine! It almost broke me. I clean my machine after every major project or two (depending on whether it’s a quilt or garments), and I always change my needle after every project and sometimes more. About every 12 hours of sewing or so. Glad to see you were able to finish/update some of your projects!
Hey so you don't need to change your needle every project. To put it in perspective I sew a lot of mediumweight corduroy and using good needles you'll only start to see skipped stitches after 5 or 6 projects, so 20-30 hours. When you swap out a needle from say, a sharp to a ballpoint, keep the old one and reuse it. I haven't changed my overlocker needles since 2018, and they still haven't shown signs of skipping.
@@SewingandCaring I wish I could say the same! I have had many issues with skipped stitches on my machine, and I baby that thing. Again, it depends on the project for my needles as well, and I’ve found that ball point needles and 90/14 needles last longer. My 80/12 and 75/11 needles, as well as my microtex needles just don’t last, and my non-stick quilting needles are a one and done. I definitely try to clean my machine regularly, since the bobbin housing gets so much lint in it, and it prevents me from having to service it as frequently.
@@sevenandthelittlestmew Do you find any difference with a walking foot on? I ask because I've been using pfaffs with the IDT system for decades and it is possible that its creating less resistance, also I did notice microtex lasted longer with woven iron on interfacing which I've only just discovered and fallen in love with
@@SewingandCaring I’ve got two walking feet for my machine, and I generally use the HP plate, so I’ll test out the HP walking foot and see how it goes! Thanks so much for the tip - the less needles I have to use on a project, the better, so if I can double (or even triple) the time I can use a needle, all the better. I am usually sewing on my Janome 6700p.
Edit to add that I normally only use a walking foot for quilting; I haven’t used it for apparel.

Cherry top: try adding pleats at the back neckline to bring that into a better fit, and let them flow out into an a-line shape

I've owned my sewing machine for 36 years. I don't think I've ever cleaned it. It's been serviced a couple of times though and it still works just fine. In fact, it's sitting just across the room ready for me to do some tasks with it.
You know what? I've been gearing up to attack my "needs to be fixed" pile, but I hadn't planned on adding any pockets because they intimidate me a little bit. But really, a skirt will get a ton more use from me if it has pockets. Soo... Thanks for the nudge.
Wow, my bobbin starts really misbehaving when there's like, the lint generated by one big spool of thread in there. I'm amazed you amassed that much lint in there and could still sew!

Don't feel too bad about having gone a couple years of sewing without cleaning the machine- I once found a 1968 machine that had evidently never been cleaned in its entire life, and someone had used it enough to break a presser foot! I found the bits of the foot inside the machine base along with waaaayyy too much lint, thread bits, and broken needles. I've seen a lot of concerning messes inside of sewing machines, but I haven't yet seen anything that beat that one.
My border collie has descided she loves your videos for the dog content. She was very into the sloth toy moment in this one 🥰

The biggest issue with leaving the lint in the machine is that lint is highly flammable. The thought of my machine catching fire while I'm using it is what has me, at a minimum, taking a brush to the bobbin housing regularly. Of course, there's some more in-depth cleaning that can be done, but yeah, fire is a fear.
Charlie I saw a seamstress ripping a seam. She put the garment under the foot of the sewing machine to hold it! I know right!!!!! It’s a dream!!!!!
